Discussion About Celeste player 0815Ryan who bought Mario Maker 1 to beat an insane water level

I'm not sure if many here are aware but there is a huge community of Mario Maker players dedicated to beat every single level. With the announcement of Wii U servers shutting down April 8th, there has been a huge push to clear every level and at the time of writing this, it's just less than 300 levels left.

This might not be the biggest clear yet but it has one of the best stories. Celeste player 0815Ryan was following the 0% progress a while back while he was sick and wanted to contribute, but he had never really played Mario and there's basically no easy levels left at this point. But a level caught his eye: "hardest skull level (175 blue)". Why? Well, it's super straight forward: you do the same thing over and over again. Swim down to a blue skull, jump, rinse and repeat. 175 times. Two problems tho: you only have a 2 frame window to jump. And there is time pressure, so you can't take your time.

This is what is called a "consistency level" and the maker of the level, zun, has specialized in water precision levels. Out of the 300 levels left, zun had 3 of them, meaning it was 1% of all the unbeaten levels in the game. He has also been able to protect the country of Spain from defeat: the community has focused on beating every single level from all countries and now there are only 3 left: Japan, Spain and Canada. With this clear, Spain has two left (both Zun) and Canada has one outrageous level left, that might survive for quite some time.

So Ryan decided to give it a go. He bought a copy of Mario Maker on eBay and got to work. Over the past 10 days or so Ryan has spent close to 50 hours grinding the level, and getting better and better. His consistency kept improving, and he made it close to the end several times, doing the same thing over and over. But just a little while back, he finally pulled it off:

With this he has finally beaten a level in Mario Maker! Might be his first and last.

I just thought it was a cool story and wanted to share. Also, following the 0% team is amazingly fun and I'd recommend everybody to try and follow it this final month ahead of the servers closing. I have no doubt they will reach completion!

I had missed this! It's been fun watching the last leg of the journey in bits and pieces.

So the first Mario Maker levels won't be available anymore after April 8?

Yes, won't be able to connect to Wii U games online anymore.

I think the community is working on enabling their own servers, though.

I didn't even have any idea about the push to beat every level, and being down to ~300. That's so cool. Thanks for sharing!

Wait bruh what

I don't have a Wii U anymore but is there a way to see if they already went through my old levels?

Unless your level was some type of precision / kaizo level (both sides of the same coin, really), it was probably beaten a long time ago already.

You could try looking at the resources in this Reddit thread if your level was one of those things, though (assuming you uploaded before a copy of the database was taken).

I didn't know there was a push to clear these levels but that is super cool. Only 257 remain according to https://www.issmmbeatenyet.com/ which given the number of levels that must have been created overall (and the popularity of kaizo) is really impressive.

I assume at least some of the remaining levels must be those pure RNG ones with a tiny tiny chance of the game rolling in your favour?

I'm going to guess no, otherwise I imagine team 0% would be calling out for normal people like us who have WiiUs & MM1 to throw our faces into the saw for rng clears.

There is basically only NSMBU kaizo speedruns left. And by speedrun I don't mean just 10 seconds or 20 seconds: there are a lot of very long speedruns too with tight timer. A lot of them are incredibly confusing to figure out the route, but once someone takes the time to do it there's a lot of people who can beat any level in a matter of hours. There is 6 non NSMBU levels left. 3 SMB1, 3 SMW and 0 SMB3. As said 2 of these levels are made by zun and revolve around crazy water consistency.

I'm partly surprised that the remaining uncleared levels don't have a bunch of bullshit like RNG manipulation, hidden blocks, complicated contraptions with "safes" needing unlock combinations, etc. But I suppose it makes sense with (a) the fact you can download and view levels in SMM1, and (b) there being a concerted community push to beat every level, that the bullshit has been cleared and all that is left is legitimately difficult levels.

That’s Thabeast’s music…

Been interesting seeing him back doing level grinds of 3+ hours.

How does the blue skulls work and why do you have to stay close to them?
When you land on the blue skull platform, it starts moving. In this level, if you don’t immediately get off it (within the 2 frames mentioned in the OP, I’m guessing) it’ll take you into the spikes. So the runner has to lightly land on the skull platform, get off instantly before they die, and then do that 175 times before the timer runs out.

Good for Aura. I watched him grind that level for a while. It's near the end of his most recent Twitch VOD if anybody wants to see it.

I'm surprised by how quickly they've gone from 100 to 10. I thought it would slow to a crawl by this point.

Anyone streaming the last two levels? I kinda want to be there when the counter hits zero, gonna be some immense vibes.

Beast has been streaming The Last Dance. He should be live in 4 hours or so--not sure on his exact start time. He's gotten close and he might be the favorite to clear it.

Thab will probably clear Last Dance today, which will just leaving Trimming The Herbs.

Edit here is a video where a top MM player (Thab) breaks down Trimming The Herbs and why it's so difficult.

The Last Dance was beaten by Yamata

All that remains is Trimming The Herbs

A nearly impossible 10 second stage is all that stands between the community and full completion of Mario Maker 1.

i’m no expert, but i wouldn’t be surprised if trimming the herbs doesn’t get beaten. It doesn’t just look nearly impossible, it looks completely impossible. now watch the community clear it by the end of the day and prove me wrong

Nintendo should have added a special cutscene that automatically plays for everyone once all levels are cleared, like that infamous “Nuclear Deterrence” event in Metal Gear Solid V. then there would also be years of speculation that accomplishing the goal unlocked a secret update for Mario Maker 2.

Here's the second-to-last level clear. Thab kept grinding and beat it a couple hours later.

One level remaining.

If the original map maker was a comedian, he'd log back in and change the name of the stage to "The Second-to-Last Dance"

A team 0% member made a FAQ for the final uncleared level, Trimming The Herbs.

Contains all the important info!

Yes the clear on Trimming the Herbs was hacked

Team 0% will keep going for a legit clear

I just turned on beast about 10 minutes before the news. GG Team 0%.

From what I understand the Trimming the Herbs creator admitted he used a TAS to upload the level. Some sort of raspberry pi setup.

Yes, very disappointing. Good the truth is out. If people grind to beat TTH I will probably still follow it!

Glad the creator confessed as opposed to watching people spend 100's of hours trying to beat an illegitimate level.

Very deflating conclusion, but on the bright side it means that The Last Dance really was the last dance lol.

True end achieved by beating the optional, secret final boss. Great job to everyone who contributed.
