Xenoblade 2 is a wonderful game.

XBC2 is a fantastic game in many respects. To have such an expansive beautiful world so early in the switch's lifespan and to be able to play that entirely portable was really something to behold. The story and the
establishment of a greater lore between games
was incredibly exciting to see unfold. I really loved the battle system too and learning it's nuances (and they really managed to home in on what worked and take it even further with Torna). Honestly it was really cool to hear a video game lead with a Northern English accent too lol and a jrpg with high production values that isn't published by SE never goes amiss.

One of the funniest things was when Pyra/Mythra was announced for Smash I remember people saying the cadence of Rex's VO was terrible and I just had to laugh because it was perfectly natural for someone from the North West.

Yeah, I hope XC3 brings back armour sets again. The fashion gear option (introduced in X and added to DE) means those who are happy with the default look are free to stick to that.

I guess the original thinking in 2 was that they didn't want to bother with designing new gear for every single blade, but changed their minds come the DLC and felt it was OK for at least the core cast to have something new, even if it was mostly just colour swaps.

The game is great but the field skills are awful and pure trash. I wasted around 10-15 hours leveling the blades because I thought it’s optional and not necessary to progress in the story. I really hope that they remove them in the next game.

I don't even think field skills are a bad idea on paper to be honest. They clearly put a ton of effort into creating the game world and giving the player a reason to go back to older locations to find secrets and stuff makes 100% sense, it's just that the way they decided to implement them is not that exciting.

I really hope Monolith has taken a really good look at what they did with in the past during the development of XC3 and will instead offer more meaningful ways to evolve the way the player can approach the game world, in the same way getting a Skell (and later the flight module) completely changed exploration in XCX and made it as good as it is.

Cycling through trash blades and grinding to reach an arbitrary skill check just to remove a giant log from the way just feels like busywork and honestly makes me feel nothing once i eventually get there. Unlocking the flight module in XCX is instead a game changing moment that makes all the effort the game requires the player somehow worth it. The end result is the same (aka unlocking new "layers" of the map), but the way XCX does it is just way more gratifying.

Yeah, it was rather refreshing and it suited Rex's background of being a regular friendly hardworking Joe. Just a shame it seems many people couldn't handle something that went against typical JRPG convention, but to that I say give the hero of XC3 a Brummie accent!

I hated Rex's stupid butt window when I first started playing the game

Probably the most minor of my character design complaints, though

Choking down the distateful aspects of the game, it's a wonderfully immersive experience and my favorite game on the Switch. I've completed it to 100%, and that includes Torna's New Game Plus!

After trying on a whim XCDE earlier this year and loving it, I've got XC2 to play straight after beating Dread. Really excited to get into it after hearing so many people speak so highly of it.

Would welcome any recommendations/tips for a first time player!

Hit the screenshot button everytime a tutorial pops up so you can go back later and re-read the information when it makes more sense.

Also hit the screenshot button everytime Nia is on screen. This will make finding the tutorial pictures harder but it's worth it.

In addition to the usual criticisms about tropes, character designs and predictable archetypes; I had a hard time finding enjoyment in it despite trying to because it's so long and I didn't find the story especially interesting up until the last third. I think I could've come out of it on a more positive overall if it was snappier, there was less filler in the side content, and if enemies had a bit more chill so that I could explore the environment more calmly. Exploring also wasn't quite as satisfying as in BotW, for example. Partially due to the kind of floaty character movement and it being less dense in points of interest. I haven't played Torna yet, but I can see how a smaller scope could be an improvement. There's a skeleton of a game that I'd be way into in XB2 and hopefully that'll be a bigger part of whatever Monolith does next, but clearly the XB2 format has found an audience regardless so I'm not holding my breath.

My Second favorite game of 2017 (just barely under Zelda). A truly epic story full of twists and turns, and the way the story linked up with 1 was done really well. I feel that 2 did a better job with it's characters and world than 1. 2 had more cities and people and nations in it than 1, which was a lot of wilderness by comparison. The character were also so memorable. Zeke and Pandoria were like a cross of Team Rocket and JoJo characters the first couple times you run into them which makes me lol. I even named my cat after Zeke.

Criticisms of the game are largely that while I don't mind the core crystal random chance thing on paper, I wish there was some way to get them all eventually without dealing with the rng. Like if the game had some kind of special core crystal that would be expensive/hard to obtain that gave you a guaranteed chance of getting a blade you don't have, that would be a great way to round out the collection. Still don't have KOS MOS.

Field skills could have been done better, It was never really a problem for me until ruins of Morthya.

Would love to see some of the characters again, really looking forward to 3. Game Awards reveal please.

It might be tied to DLC but I'm fairly sure they added the option to turn enemy aggro off.

Best RPG there is. Hopefully XB3 retains the Blade/Core Crystal system with even more characters. But this time with less bullshit pull rates please.

I surprisingly loved the gatcha, and if it returns I'll go even blinder into the game instead of watching the weekly blade updates. I want to be shocked.

One of my favorite games of all time, and probably my favorite JRPG. It has pretty significant problems in the character design department, but that and the gatcha system never really bothered me much personally (though I still consider them very valid complaints). The story, characters, and world are just really engaging, the gameplay is top-notch, and the soundtrack is just amazing

I actually ended up mildly disappointed with XC: DE since it was hyped up as being better than its sequel, and to me it really didn't match up to that. Still a great game though.

Thanks so much - will take both on board for when I start it some time later this week.

Rex can occupy whatever role you need on your team. If you're coming from the original Xenoblade, you might used to dealing massive damage as Shulk or Melia. I was, and I just couldn't beat certain battles without dying. I made Rex an additional healer, and it completely changes the flow of combat. Experiment with your blades, and make the combat work for you.

Realizing you also made your way to Famiboards due to seeing you in the Xenoblade 2 topic is somehow surprising and not surprising at the same time Man God lol.

Character designs aside this game scratches an RPG itch I didn't know I had. Xenoblade style exploration with a gacha summoning system was a great idea that some people will despise. But for me it really added an extra reason to validate exploring the world like I would in the previous games. Going out of my way to find a secret area and getting a great view along with a chest that had a few rare core crystals in it. Felt so damn gratifying. In a way that rare weapon and armor drops just aren't.

It sure is. And Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be just as wonderful.

After thinking about it for a few years, I think I can say this is one of my favorite games of all time in my many, many years of gaming. I never thought a new game would give me that feeling many of the games I played growing up did. Takahashi really was able to encapsulate and culminate his story and themes into this single game. I can't wait for the future of the series.

This is exactly me. My top 3 Switch game with BOTW and AC:NH. I still can't believe a videogame can have this many beautiful tracks. And the ovearching story is just sublime. If it didn't have stupid tropes that derail from what I just said, this would be one of the best videogames ever. Unfortunately we can't have it all.

It's really exciting to see what they will do next. They are incredibly talented, have the drive to make great things and overall very good taste (except for what we all already know and to which I agree deeply, before it released I used to call this game Xenowaifu Chronicles).

Love the game. Probably my favorite JRPG, tho I’ll have to think it over in seriousness.

Probably only JRPG where I think the main cast interactions all work well. Even The villains are better then most in JRPG. Never expected to really end up liking Jin and Malos as much as I did.

Best part was that it made up for Xenoblade X where I found that game to be mediocre and just overall unfun

I loved XBC1 and XBX but could never find the energy and motivation to finish XBC2. I go back to it like once a year and push myself through another six hours or so, but I find almost none of it enjoyable in comparison to the previous two.

Where’s my Switch port of XCX Nintendo?

Thanks, that’s a really useful tip - I used Shulk as the big damage dealer and normally default to the main character filling that role in RPGs so will be conscious of that not being the case here going into it.

Now I sold my switch and can't play it anyway. But there were three things that bothered me(love to death the first one). Character designs, fan service and this mechanic of having a human pokemon. The last one is a bit irrational but it really puts me off. Remember dropping Fate anime because of it too.

The ethical and moral implications of blades is perfectly explored in the game.

I understand, though it goes beyond the master/slave idea. That's why I said it's irrational. It's comparable to not wanting to play Genshin because you can change characters on the fly, or not wanting to play a game because of a desert setting.

I love it. Some questionable design decision aside the game is pure awsomness. Despite its length i never got tired of it. The soundtrack is also godly. I want the third game to be revealed already.

I guess burning through hundreds of souls to get the one person/bird/bear you actually want and discarding the rest back into the void except for a couple of faceless dozens who'll spent the rest of their existence send far away from the person they bonded with on an endless grind of mercenary missions wouldn't be up your alley.

Yeah, it's one of my top 5 RPGs alongside the original Xenoblade and the EarthBound/Mother trilogy. Its highs are incredibly high in both the base game and Torna, and I wish more people could look past the questionable character design decisions to appreciate the world, story, and characterization found within.

It's a game that I wish had more confidence in those aspects so as to not need to feel the need to pander. Its finer elements are some of the best in the genre.

I liked almost everything about the game except the battle system, which is crucial for an RPG so that brought it down quite a few points.

After enjoying the battle system in Xenoblade X, I can't really explain why 2's didn't click with me. It just felt like a convoluted mess with bad UI. I couldn't always tell what was going on and it felt like an enemy could 1 shot me randomly at any given moment.

Still need to play Xenoblade DE, so I hope that one is less convoluted.

It has the same issue as Pokémon.

Gameplay: Less than perfect stats? Get rid

I know that canonically the blades not in your active party just hang out in Garfont village and do mercenary work, I like to think this is basically what goes on with released blades as well.

I can totally justify getting rid of imperfect pokemon! I can... I can...

I'm just releasing them into the wild. If you really think about it, they'll have a better life in freedom. The bad stats mean they're not the type of pokemon that would enjoy fighting. Not like the pokemon with 31s across the board. Those? Those are the killers.

(Seriously, tho, it is kinda even worse in XBC2. In Pokemon you can catch a team of only six pokemon you love, no more, and beat the game with them. The core crystals contain a whole class of beings that are just junk. But at least we're not feeding Blades to other Blades to power them up, as routinely happens in gacha systems.)

Tell me if you can get through. all. the. Blades'. release. quotes. and come away with that comforting thought intact.
