One of my favorite series. I'm actually doing a slow replay of 2 now. Its such a comfort food game for me. The music and world is just so good. I mainly play in handheld, and while I wish it looked better, its such a good comfort food world to run around in. I've similarly played through 1 a couple times as well. I never played x. I have CEMU up and running but am still hopeful someday we'll see a switch port.

I need some tips on how best to deal with the combat. I fell off hard at the lady that ambushes you in the alley in that first town after rescuing the lady with the big boobs on the ship and gramps turns into baby yoshi.

I do want to give it another go but I'm afraid the same thing will happen again.

What are some tips for dealing with these boss fights or indeed any tips?

I recently replayed it earlier in the year and it's still one of my favorite games ever. Everything from gameplay, how good the story is and how charming the cast is, the MUSIC, the environments, they really knocked it out of the park. It's one of those games where the good far far far outweigh the bad and while not necessarily a 'perfect' game, it's one that reminds in my mind and heart even after 4 years or so now.

Mythra is the best (though the whole cast is great haha).

Same here. Not sure if it was the voice acting or the character design, but I lost interest really quick. Wish it wasn't the case.

well, as someone who considers the original xenoblade (wii version) one of the best jrpgs of all time i couldnt force myself to buy this one. I just strongly dislike the characters art - on the remastered xenoblade too - and the pseudo gatcha system, among other well documented stuff.

Still...xenoblade x on the switch nintendo, what are you waiting for?

This is hard for me to answer because that's so early and the game introduces mechanics so slowly I genuinely can't remember what options you even have access to at this point.

It is. The technical side is still kinda messy and not being able to change your look is a massive downgrade, but I like the cast, the characters look more
human compared to X but the worlds are more dense and the battle system with their elements and breaking them is really cool

If you have 10 minutes this video explains the combat pretty well:

In the beginning good pouch items can help you a bit.

Amazing game but god, it had some really bad character design. Like FF Tactics Advance levels bad. I would have believed if someone showed Pyra and Mythra before the reveal of X2 and said "these are from the new Compile Heart" game.

I hope they won't work with this new designer again and hire an industry veteran like Kosuke Fujishima of Tales fame or Hidari for the next game.

I loooove Xenoblade 2. The Switch was on absolutely fire that first year with BOTW, Mario Odyssey, MK8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2, so to end the year with Xenoblade 2? What a treat. I’m also not that great at JRPGs but was really invested in this one and actually completed it! I still need to play that Expansion Story though.

There was no lead character designer, which I believe is something Monolith Soft has identified they want to work on. At the very least it's pretty safe to assume 3's characters will be designed by different people than 2.

Fantastic game with a great story and cast to match it. The only issue really the the gatcha balde system BUT I also feel are hyperbolic in the sense that it is completely optional and you can just use the story blades if you want and they’re quite good.

That said, the range needed to be higher. Or better yet, I would rather it not have any ordinary blades, only unique ones, but the crystals be much less plentiful so you can’t just span them all in twenty minutes.

I believe someone named Masatsugu Saito was the lead character designer of X2, he designed all the party characters including Rex, Pyra and Mythra. It was his first game project. Nomura was the guest designer and he was responsible with Torna characters, including everyone in The Golden Country.

Correct, but just the main party (and not even all of them?) isn't really a traditional "lead". Since neither are Monolith Soft staff members, there's a good chance neither of them return.

I wouldn't hate Nomura coming back though. I'm not a giant fan of how he does hair in particular, but I thought the Torna characters were all great.

Give me a chance to get back to you about the combat, but I want you to know this is an all-time FamiBoards sentence.

it's aight. it's the weakest of all the Xenoblades. I greatly prefer Torna over it. the level design feels lesser than Xenoblade 1. maybe there's just too many areas. don't really care for the cast, especially Rex as a protagonist. I feel Rex is a vessel to carry the more interesting protag, Pyra and Mythra. but because they're tied to Rex in a fuckin knot, this uninteresting dweeb has to come along for the ride. the combat, I feel is the weakest. the auto attack is a slog and is just there to build up meter without doing anything interesting. they just don't feel like they do anything. at least with 1 and X, I feel like I'm making progress.

I mean, I completely am understanding of criticism of the sexualization of characters, because good lord does Xenoblade II is up there in this regards. I don't even understand the bathtub Blade of all things, because it's just... What?

The thing is, at any given point, someone on the upper end of production at Monolith Soft, Nintendo, and the like, could've approached the character designer and team and talked about the issues with the designs. A lot of people had to sign off on this. This is incredibly important and to lay blame entirely on the Character Designer(s), it absolutely goes beyond just that. Multiple parties have to be held accountable for the finalized designs.

If someone had interjected, the designer absolutely would've adjusted their work and we could've gotten notably different outfits among the women. I don't mind the overly goofy and flamboyant designs for the most part, which I personally think it gives the game it's own charm, but it goes beyond that with a lot of the women characters. It also feels at odds with the game trying to go for a General Audience and Mainstream market.

Some of the other problem too is the guest character designers also seemingly were allowed to do whatever they wanted, which resulted in, not even just the aforementioned blade I mentioned, but other... designs. Again, multiple people had to sign off on that.

So again, I get it. But there's more to blame than just on the character designer on this game.

Literally, whats wrong with their design? just cause its sexy?

I hope you're not trying to defend a game that have overtly sexualized designs and sexist tropes that are present in the game. But yes, the bulk of the complaints often center around the sexualized designs of a number of the women presented in the game (plus some of the more problematic sexist tropes presented in the game, such as the hot spring scene and the main character awaking up to Pyra's chest in full view close to his face). Some people don't care for the overly flamboyant and exaggerated designs and that's more of a personal taste issue. I completely get if that's not your cup of tea at the end of the day.

However, that said, the above designs are a bit more than just that and it's completely worth discussing the problems surrounding them.

I disagree. The game is pretty terrible. Awful even XD

Hold on a second there....

There isn’t any detail in what 9-Volt specifically finds bad, but I’ll jump in since you went straight for the “just being sexy” line: please don’t reduce issues with sexualized character designs down like that. Folks have as much right to criticize character designs in the game as they do praising the gameplay or story of the game. I’m sure you’ve seen enough discussion to know what people’s issues with the designs are that you don’t need to imply they are just being prudes.

The bolded bit is incorrect. Nomura only designed Jin, Malos, Akhos, Patroka, and Mikhail.

Saito designed Lora, Haze, and Addam (Lora and Haze already appeared in the main game though, so Saito's only new design for the Torna expansion was Addam if I'm remembering correctly).

My friend had been nagging me for ages to play xenoblade 1… then when pyra joined smash i finally agreed to. I loved it so much I had to play the second. And it was even better! I really loved it, the humour reminded me of the old n64 rare games, i guess all the british voiceover work added to that. Big fan
