On topic:

Please keep all posts relevant to current US Politics, this isn't a political theory page but actual application. Please try to restrain yourself from doom and gloom as well.

One of Trump's aides, Dan Scavino, is actively evading subpoena summons.

There has to be something, right? riiiight? 🙏 Hopefully something that gets him and the rest of his clan in trouble, i am probably being a lil too optimistic, but i just can't stand him.
I’m right there with you! It seems like he gets away with a lot but but whatever it is, hopefully it’s finally bad enough that people can’t just ignore or spin it this time, and he and his crew finally have to suffer some real consequences.

US politics + no doom and gloom seems mutually exclusive. But I'll try!

So, uh... how about that positive governmental news with... the one thing? You know, the good thing currently happening in US politics. The one with the progress and the justice and the necessary things getting done.

Just a friendly reminder to vote in your local elections this November. Change starts at home, as they say.

Good news. I can finally go on a trip to Buffalo from Toronto. Luckily, NY state has a good Vaccine rate (In comparison to the rest of America) so I feel more comfortable going there than somewhere like Florida or heaven forbid, Texas.

I live in Detroit so I am very excited to cross the border into Windsor and Toronto now :p

Cannot wait for this, I have a very vocal minority of coworkers that will not stop screaming about the vaccine mandate. The sooner this pushes them towards getting it or at the worst fired so they cannot harass us online the better.

Just an update, got moderator approval to share our discord here for more political discussion if you are interested.

As a former moderator on the discord server for this community, it's really heartening to see it here. Hopefully we get a lot of insightful posters to learn from with all of the stuff happening over at the Old Place.

Anyway about One America News, a YouTuber named Illuminaughti scored an interview with an anonymous employee:

Over three videos, we find out about the history of the network and the propaganda techniques that it uses. Many of which are brazenly unethical and possibly illegal.

"Okay guys, what do we do? The Phantom thieves just stole the hearts of Kristen Sinema and Joe Manchin and turn them into bleeding heart socialists quoting Das Kapital. This is a disaster. Our voter base will actually expect something and we promised our donor base that we would stop any meaningful reform. What are we going to do?"

"Of course we'll just get another Joe Lieberman!"

If it wasn't for Joe Manchin and Kristen Sinema being stubborn. I am sure that the Democrats would find another way to fail at passing bills.
Exhibit A: The group of 9 House moderates that tried to derail the dual track for Infrastructure and Reconciliation.

Though thankfully, only Gottheimer seems to be left with that idea.

Today, Puerto Rico (USA's colony in the Caribbean) has been seeing its first massive protest against the privatization of the island's electrical grid and the privatizing agent, LUMA Energy. The protest comes after Puerto Rico has seen:

- More power outages since LUMA took over on June 1.

- The power outages last at minimum 3 times more than under PREPA.

- Wayne Stensby, CEO of LUMA, denies to hand data needed to fiscalize the contract to the PR House of Representatives.

- Displaced PREPA workers are being denied equipment, schedules, and proper working conditions in their new job postings as an attempt to get them to quit.

- LUMA has burned at least 2 homes because of their lack of knowledge in relation to Puerto Rico's powergrid.

- A 21% electricity price hike since June 1, with more already in the pipeline.

The protest is taking place in the island's main highway, Expreso Las Americas. Meanwhile, the governing New Progressive Party (not actually progressive, they are more conservative party of the traditional two in the island) is doing a heavy astroturfing campaign in Twitter and Facebook to try and kill today's momentum.

Not sure it didn't seem like an easy process so I didn't try

Yeah it's open but still not a super easy process. Americans need to have a PCR test within 72 hrs of crossing the border, along with their vaccination paperwork, and also fill their info in the ArriveCan app. And bring their passport of course.

Coming into the US, Canadians have to have to show vaccination proof, but do not need a test to enter the US. US citizens coming back into the US don't need anything. No vaccination status or test, just your passport.

The problem is that going back into Canada, everyone has to have a PCR test and that's $300 US out of pocket for Canadians for each person! So for a family of 4 Canadians, it's going to cost $1,200 US to cross back to Canada. Needless to say, the border going into the US has been pretty empty because it’s so expensive for Canadians to get back into Canada.

A final tidbit from last night, as by the time of the earlier post the protest had still not ended. Some hours later after yesterday's post and as protesters were still on the highway, Pedro Pierluisi (the Governor) ordered the highway lights to be turned off and for traffic to continue as normal. His intention was pretty obvious, get someone ran over, but it backfired and led to some of the most powerful images of the protest:

(Translation: In PR we shine by our own light)

(Translation: Protesters use their cellphones to light the way in protest against LUMA Energy)

The protest also included a bit of humor as per usual. This mainly relating to a event that occured earlier in September, when electricity went off for good part of the island and LUMA Energy blamed sargassum affecting the generation centrals. Which was taken as ridiculous explanation in the island. That was then mixed with how the PNP/NPP governments always consider their opposition as communists, and the communist sargassum was born and in attendance at the protest 😆

(Translation: The Communist Sargassum #PaFueraLuma)

Luma Energy is a joint venture between Quanta Services (HQ in Houston, Texas) and Atco (HQ in Calnary, Canada). Per Representative Mariana Nogales Molinelli, both companies have been guilty of being the main privatization force across Latin American, always with the same result: a subpar electricity service and breaching the contracts they sign.

Apparently it's not too expensive in the long run to bribe two senators in order to make sure no legislation is ever passed. I'm sure they'd be able to manage two more if it came down to it.
