I don't know how "positive" it is since it just speaks to the relative quality of something else, and thus could be seen as downplaying, but here it goes:

AAA games make the best Metroidvanias.

My personal top 3 Metroidvanias, and my top 3 games of all time (probably), are Resident Evil Remake, Metroid Prime, and Dark Souls.

Right. It's been 10 years since I played it, but I remember having fun, but cringing during the cutscenes.

Replace all the cutscenes and change the tone of the story. Samus needs to be a bad-ass. Make the pixel hunts cut scenes of Samus being bad-ass instead of pixel hunts.

Move the dodge button to a shoulder button, and put a timer on it like the counter in Dread, but cut the timer on a successful dodge so that you can do multiple successive dodges.

Make half or more of the marines women.

I actually have a big list of changes for each Metroid game in the main storyline.

Metroid Zero Mission - emulate on switch. adjust the ending rewards. We don't need samus in booty shorts and a sports bra as a reward.
Samus Returns - port to Switch adjust anything as needed.
Super Metroid - Bring the controls in like with what we see in Zero and Fusion.
Other M - Notes above - alternatively remake in MercurySteam engine.
Metroid Fusion - Adjust text to make Samus more bad-ass and otherwise the same notes as Zero Mission.

Otherwise the Prime games should get ports and maybe adjustments. Make compatible with Wii controls. Like really. Do a USB sensor bar just for this. Sell some more Wii controllers and Nunchucks.

I have no opinion on Federation Force.
Sensor-Con - only 14.99!

Here is my positive VERY unpopular opinion.

Yoshi's Wooly World is not only FANTASTIC, but it is just as good as the original Yoshi's Island. Perfectly balanced, great exploration, good ramp up of challenge, good bonus worlds which are hard, fun bosses, and great visual style.

Also, the QoL update in which you don't have to get all stars, red coins, and flowers all in on try is a great move. I like how each one is kept separate from the other. I was replaying the original on NSO last week, and damn, I really hated having to do it ALL over again because I missed one thing.

Here's an unpopular positive opinion: Zelda II is the best NES Zelda that ambitiously tried a side scrolling exploratory action take on the franchise, and it's one of the best Legend of Zelda games although eclipsed by more recent Zelda games. There should be another side-scrolling 2D or 2.5D Zelda game.

I enjoy playing Super Mario Bros. 2 way more than the other NES Mario games so I hear you on that one.
I have a soft spot in my heart for the game because I played the heck out of it in Super Mario All Stars back on the SNES. I recently just replayed it and I really enjoyed it. I don't enjoy SMB 1 anymore because it's bland lol.

Dunno how unpopular this is, but having played it again, GoldenEye Wii is a great Bond romp. Obviously not a replacement for the N64 original, but I had a lot of fun playing it. The motion controls were surprisingly great as well, although I only tried them on the lowest difficulty setting.

I don't think Sonic 06 is the worst Sonic game there is, I think it's a very decent try at a Sonic Adventure 3 that was sadly rushed and full of glitches. But in terms of game design it's leagues better than games like Sonic Forces.
Sonic 06 is a game with great stages and the only adventure game where all 3 characters are fun to play as including silver.

I would say that Mario Sunshine is the best 3D Mario game. In terms of raw movement ability, 64 and Odyssey come close, but I love the feel of Sunshine the most. It nails playability in spite of how it is a blatantly rushed and unfinished game, content-wise. It's kind of like the Smash Bros. Melee of the Mario franchise.

Zelda is best when it's telling new stories. Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are some of the best places the series has been story-wise. It doesn't always need to be about Ganon.

Of Shovel Knight's playable protagonists, Plague Knight is the most fun to control and has the best story. All of the other characters play great too, but I hate how the rest of them need help from bouncing off or slashing through enemies to get anywhere. Not Plague Knight though. Once you get good with him, you can fling yourself around with reckless abandon and its so so so much fun.

I'm perpetually upset that nobody gives old Plaguey the respect he deserves. 😤

I might make a topic about this in the far-flung future. Maybe

As experimental as it was, the N64 controller was an extremely well designed controller.
I agree. It was also extremely comfortable and I do wonder how many people complaining actually used it. Complaints about the joystick are also a bit strange when the Joy Con joystick makes it look like a masterpiece of reliability in comparison.

Oooo, finally, a thread where I can mention how much I love Star Fox Zero and FF7 Dirge of Cerberus.

I loved the WiiU and really wanted a game that made use of its novelty, so I enjoyed the heck out of Star Fox Zero. I even think the dogfights are the best in the series.

Dirge of Cerberus was just mindless fun. I don't care much for the story but I had a blast playing it.

Oh also, possibly my most controversial opinion-- the plot of Kingdom Hearts isn't nonsensical, it's just dense and presented in a convoluted manner. It can be hard to follow for this reason, but oftentimes people will reduce it to "not making any sense" and I personally disagree with that.

Well, it's not like i disagree about the joystick, but it is true that finding a N64 controller in good state is kind of a miracle.

The joystick would grind agaisnt the octogonal dust and produce dust that goes directly into the mechanism box, as a result, once it starts wearing off it doest it extremely fast.

I like Pokemon Sword and Shield.

I wish Game Freak or the Pokemon Company did more with it's characters in the game. I feel like there's a lot of potential for it to be more a character-driven story, especially with how popular a lot of them seem to be: Marnie, Nessa, Bea, Sonia, Raihan, Leon, Bede, and Hop are just some examples.

1 - Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl do not look bad graphically.

2 - The Wii U was way better than people give it credit, many of the Switch tentpoles are either Wii U games or Wii U franchises.

3 - Twilight Princess was really good. Skyward Sword too.

4 - The GBA died too soon, I liked it more than the DS.

Resident Evil 6 is a lot of fun and one the best coop experiences of that generation. I miss offline coop games a lot :(
You get a big Yeah from me! Yes, Resi 6 is dumb, but it's some of the best dumb fun, specially with a friend. I have well over 150+ hours of Resi 6 spread across the PC and PS4.

Pokémon ORAS was justified in not including story content from Emerald in its main adventure because Emerald's story additions were bad for pacing and the canonization of these changes as definitive is a huge factor in people's complaints about Hoenn's late-game. Emerald adds an extra villainous hideout that doubles as a cave with no interesting encounters in it, which comes directly after a separate villainous hideout whose grunts use a similar pool of Pokémon, and I can't imagine why anyone would want this again. It then extends the legendary plot by making the player go through the southern sea routes and Sky Pillar after visiting Sootopolis, following which the player has to return to Sootopolis to finish the subplot and get the Rain Badge. If an Emerald player actually wants to capture Rayquaza after this, they have to trek out to Sky Pillar a second time, whereas RS players have already battled their box legend at this point. The only notable thing this adds to the experience is an increase of the amount of time the player has to spending dicking around in the ocean that everyone loves; Emerald has almost twice as many mandatory sea routes as Ruby and Sapphire because of this change.

Devil's Third is a fun game. Both single player and the amazing multiplayer.
It's one of the best games on the entire console, honestly. I think people forgot how to like action games at some point, because I know for a fact it would be a Cult Classic if it had come out on the original Xbox or something.

shout out to the like 20 other people who played the PC port btw

I think this is the clincher. It turned people off because it looked like a game from the original Xbox.

well okay it wasn't THAT ancient looking. it had early 360 energy for sure, but let's be real, that was only a little below average for the Wii U library (which mostly looked like late 360 games).
either way I just wish I could still play the multiplayer. truly a beautiful thing.

Chunbun. Then. Now. Forever.
I actually don’t understand why people choose to entirely skip games released exclusively on EGS. It’s the equivalent of someone skipping an exclusive on Switch, due to the barebones OS and relative lack of power. Those aren’t good reasons to skip games I’m interested in and no one has been able to make a convincing argument to skip a game released on EGS, especially ones funded by Epic. Like, there’s a very good chance they’re funding Remedy’s Alan Wake 2. If I played on PC, why would I skip that, even if it never launches on Steam?
I can think of 3 solid reasons:

1. Pricing. Many people around the world enjoy regional pricing on Steam but may not get this on EGS (this is actually the opposite for me - I get no regional pricing on Steam whatsoever but I do on many EGS games.) Why spend $60US when you can wait a year and spend $20 (and on your preferred platform)? $60 is a very high price for many people.

2. Controller support. Steam natively supports a wide variety of controllers and Steam Input is ridiculous in how much control you have when it comes to adjusting and remapping. You can even add gyro support to any game as long as the controller allows it. EGS leaves it up to developers to support specific controllers, and the vast majority only support Xbox controllers. Steam by contrast has support for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Steam, and more.

3. Playerbase. Barely anybody uses the EGS for anything other than Fortnite or Rocket League. You will likely have trouble finding people to play with in many titles. Samurai Shodown is a prime example among my friends where people were interested, but realised that there was going to be nobody to play online so they didn't bother.

So while I'm typically not one to just act like the EGS doesn't exist - I've bought games there and I do benefit from regional pricing (Eastward is like $10!), I can see why some may prefer to wait for a Steam release.

I'll just chime in to say that I love Mega Man 64 (yes, even that version where the final boss' speech is unintelligible) and that more people should play Drill Dozer. It even has rumble on the European Virtual Console release!

Oh, I totally get waiting for a Steam release. That's understandable, as Steam really is a vastly superior service. And your reasons all make sense to me. What I still have trouble comprehending is the refusal to use EGS, period, even if a game is exclusive for life, such as the upcoming Remedy and Playdead games.

I really like having EXP share in Pokemon games. The series has always been about as difficult as a 4 piece puzzle, so the main attraction for me has always been completing the Pokedex. Share just makes it easier to evolve your mons, and the ease with which you level up encourages me to keep changing my party instead of relying on the same 2-3 for the entire game.

It sinks my heart when people consider the best N64 controller to be one that leaves the D-Pad in an absolutely residual position. I mean, sure, N64 doesn't have too many 2D games, but tell me how you properly play the existing ones with this

There's just no way.
Ironically, that controller is in dire need of a third handle to be able to use the D-pad properly

Makes sense and I envy your decisiveness. I can never conclusively settle on which one is the better between the two. Some days I favor the simplicity of 3D Land, and other days the levels are a little too simple.

Cat Bowser awesomeness is also just a plain unfair advantage 3D World has.

+1. I'm replaying the Gen 1 games right now and there's just so much idle grinding needed to get your mons up to an acceptable level, especially in the early game. The EXP Share has been a godsend.

I personally don't get why people would want to turn it off, but I guess there should still be the option.
