Anyone who says Yoshi's Island is the only good Yoshi game has never played Woolly World. Great game with a really creative aesthetic. Can be deviously hard if you're going for all the collectibles too. As some who has been disappointed for years by mediocre Artoon sequels it felt like the first game to live up to the original's legacy.

Still need to play Crafted World, although hearing that the music is a downgrade from Woolly World's sublime soundtrack has made me hesitant.

Right? Such a surprise hit for me, went in not expecting much and then fell in love with it. Still hum a lot of the music at times too.

Very few (if any) JRPGs actually require grinding and, since it's very seldom (if ever) required, the concept of grinding in JRPGs is a nice way for players to tailor their own experience in the sense that they can make themselves as weak or as strong as they want if they're willing to put in the time to do it. I've had games where I've sat there for a little while purposely getting a bit ahead in the level curve so I could absolutely trounce things. But I'm a weirdo who sometimes likes to chill and just beat stuff up in JRPGs for a while.
Secretly the most beneficial trait of JRPGs.

Encourage reading, familiarize with numbers, naturally adjusting difficulty ... best genre to have kids play bar none!

Selective Yeah!

The execution could have used a second iteration but every concept at play was great (except for the respawns).

If YIIK released in the 2012-2015 range, it would be seen as a cult classic and the Allanson brothers would have a similar place in the indie game discourse as Jonathon Blow and Toby Fox.

You think YIIK is as good as The Witness and Undertale?! I think that's the wildest opinion on this thread 😯

Finally, someone said it. The problem is people confuse story and plot. Plot is what happens but story is what it's about.

Which leads me on to my unpopular opinion: BOTW's story is good, actually. It doesn't have a lot of plot (or rather leaves that up to the player) but the story does something not so common in the series: it gives Link a need. Many games just have Link doing the thing without personal motivation because someone needs to. Some games, like Skyward Sword, give him the immediate task of rescuing a loved one, which is a personal motivation, but an external one.

But in BOTW, he is given a motivation of first finding out who he is (which is more than just having the Calamity Ganon plot explained to him), which then segues organically into making up for his failure and overcoming his burden as he achieves the first goal. It's the story of Link's journey to rediscover, rebuild and redeem himself.

It's more than just collect the plot coupons you don't care about, but oh no, plot twist, the plot coupons didn't work, so now you have to collect another set of plot coupons you don't care about.

The problem with threads likes this is that people interpret unpopular opinion as being not liking something popular rather than liking something unpopular.
I am 100% in agreement on BOTW's story. As much a redemption story for Link as it is a classic "save the kingdom" tale. Also the Lore in it is A+.

Never played Witness, but no, I think YIIK is awful. I also think it's a game that came out at the wrong time and would have been beloved and had a genuine following had it released half a decade or so earlier. It's the kind of game that time period would eat up.

I suppose this is neither a positive or a negative opinion.

For me, nothing yet beats the gunplay 'feel' of the Wiimote in your hands on Red Steel.

I don't agree with this, but it reminds me that Red Steel 2's gunplay and sword combat was awesome. That game is severely underlooked. A more robust package with its gameplay could have been an all-time great FPS.

I really enjoyed the single player modes from the PS2 Mortal Kombat games. Konquest, Chess Kombat, Puzzle Kombat, and Motor Kombat were all great diversions. I wish current gen Mortal Kombat brought some of these modes back. Maybe a take on Tekken Bowling and Tekken Ball.

Aaah, gotcha! Yeah, I can see that. There was a lot more love and a lot less cynicism for 90's nostalgiafest indie games and an Earthbound-inspired one was sure to at least get a cult following. I getcha.

I'm glad that never happened and we don't have to argue with the YIIK defence force though lol

The Shimomura-designed Kirby games (known for its usage of Dark Matter as a villain) are great, and I would like to see its ideals expanded upon. One thing that struck me about those games is how it uses images to convey the interface, so instead of how like Kirby's Adventure where every ability has a subtitle, in these game every ability has a simple image. The cutscenes are all completely wordless and it's charming as a result. Kirby 64 is the peak of this because it notably portrayed Kirby as comedic unlike many of the other games. The modern game that comes closest to this ideal is Rainbow Curse, as save for Elline's notebook the entire quest is more or less wordless, but it's not exactly what one would refer to as a main title.

Certainly the direction set out by Super Star is not only proven but successful, it seems like the only thing that Kirby is known for and is stuck with, but it would be cool if the stylings of the Shimomura Kirby games made a return in a major way, even for just one game.

Thank you for reading.

Yes! I feel like almost all Yoshi games are trying and failing to recapture the magic of the original, but Woolly World nailed it. It's up high on the list of games I want a Switch port for.

Yes! Red Steel 2 had basically everything people asked for on the back of criticism of the first game, and plays like a dream, but it was somewhat late in the day on Wii to get the recognition it deserved.

Wii was my favourite platform of it's time and so many of it's games are underappreciated gems:

Pandora's Tower should be a cult classic but was unfortunately bundled in the conversation with Xenoblade an an RPG trio (it's more action game than RPG)

Excite Truck is the best arcade racer in the last 15 years

Dead Space Extraction was even better than Dead Space

Little King's Story was the best 3rd party game on the platform

Tatsunoko vs Capcom was the true sequel to Marvel vs Capcom 2

Sin & Punishment Star Successor is one of Treasure's best

Endless Ocean 2 is one of Nintendo's very best games

Rabbids Go Home is surprisingly fun

I also really liked Red Steel 2 - glad to see it's got some shout outs in here

I like It too, but for a different reason.

I joined the PC Gaming scene fairly late, and my first foray into it was In a Christmas sale. It didn't take me too much to start refusing to buy games on Steam unless they were on a deep discount.

That shocked me, i love videogames and respect the people behind them because i know game developing is NOT easy, yet i refused to get anything on Steam over 10 €

Due to that, i think that the deep sale culture is damaging for the industry, it claws into the user's mentality and devaluates the overall value of the games. Nintendo games keep their value, i don't seek to pay 10 € for, say Splatoon 2 like i do for God of War.

That's a good thing in my book.

I jumped right into it when i got my PS4. It didn't hurt to get GT Sport at 20 € because the game is fairly light on content, but i have surprised myself refusing to buy certain AAA games unless they're sub 20, Spiderman for example.

Getting Ghost of Tsushima full price was a wake Up call i sorely needed

It also has the side effect of devaluating certain types of games even further. Look at the Metroid Dread price backlash for example, and how some indies have ridiculous prices for the content offered (Does anyone here think that Stardew Valley is worth less than 20!?)

There was an indie dev who quit recently because people would play their latest game, finish it and - since it was shorter than two hours meaning it falls under Steam's refund rules - refund it.

In fact, let me put this out there: Short games are fine, not every game needs to be as long as Breath of the Wild or other titles in that vein.

Of course, the story is still complete nonsense and the VO a bit ...broad. But the "right in there" design that removes the one thing ALL other tactics games I've come across rely on - the overhead view - in favor of making you feel small, boxed-in, right with the characters not knowing what is around the corner was such an incredibly cool design decision. It allows for verticality to actually feel impactful. Completely changes the level designs you can do for this, basically like a turn-based third person shooter but still with real-time aiming and free movement within a set of tiles. I adore this game.

It still breaks my heart that Austin Walker had such a terrible experience with it and completely wrote it off. One of the people in the media/criticism space I was sure would appreciate what it does.

If you can, get the Wii version. It has added content if I recall. (I have played the original GCN version only, and even that one is so good).

The only things that can make the game even better are normal controls (this game was made to be played with bongos, so it's really weird with a controller) and boss variations.

Steam Deck will be a revelation to handheld gaming precisely because of this. I can't wait to play however and wherever I want to the dirt cheap games I have accrued over the years in my account. Using a laptop or streaming to your phone doesn't cut it and the Deck costs around half of what the current handheld devices go for.
There are other tablet/handheld console form factor PCs, not for the same price but they offer the same experience that the Deck will offer.

In a similar vein, a WiiU port that is just a port is surely better than one with some new stuff. For those who missed it on the WiiU (ie everyone) it doesn't matter since it's new to them. And to those tiny number who did play it on the WiiU, they can be comfortable they don't need to bother.

The biggest gameplay problems with Other M are the blind pixel hunts when scanning, and the concessions made to fit the game on a single Wii Remote. Let that game breath on a Pro Controller and it would improve dramatically.
Right. It's been 10 years since I played it, but I remember having fun, but cringing during the cutscenes.

Replace all the cutscenes and change the tone of the story. Samus needs to be a bad-ass. Make the pixel hunts cut scenes of Samus being bad-ass instead of pixel hunts.

Move the dodge button to a shoulder button, and put a timer on it like the counter in Dread, but cut the timer on a successful dodge so that you can do multiple successive dodges.

Make half or more of the marines women.

I actually have a big list of changes for each Metroid game in the main storyline.

Metroid Zero Mission - emulate on switch. adjust the ending rewards. We don't need samus in booty shorts and a sports bra as a reward.
Samus Returns - port to Switch adjust anything as needed.
Super Metroid - Bring the controls in like with what we see in Zero and Fusion.
Other M - Notes above - alternatively remake in MercurySteam engine.
Metroid Fusion - Adjust text to make Samus more bad-ass and otherwise the same notes as Zero Mission.

Otherwise the Prime games should get ports and maybe adjustments. Make compatible with Wii controls. Like really. Do a USB sensor bar just for this. Sell some more Wii controllers and Nunchucks.

I have no opinion on Federation Force.

If they changed the unlock mechanic from "Samus is waiting for authorization from Adam to use her upgrades" to "The 'Deleter' uploaded a virus to Samus's suit and Adam is trying to debug it from the command center," that alone would make the writing better.

I agree with this. Especially if they're priced reasonably compared to second-hand market prices for original copies of those games. Without getting too negative I HIGHLY prefer it over the "rent but never own" model of services like NSO and Gamepass.

I feel like piracy for older games is normalized to the point where people see these as a waste of money, but then they'll still complain about games not being legally accessible anyways.

The music is undoubtedly worse in Crafted World, and the game starts out with a few unusually unexciting levels, but from there it veers off into many intriguing and compelling design choices. It's a really terrific and under-appreciated Switch game. I hope you dig it when you do get to check it out.

Properly designed NES games were the best of their craft because the developers knew what they were doing. Castlevania was the same, It was clearly going for a romanic horror theme, with those desolate Castle corridors and the outer wall at night.

This is related to what i said before about the deep discount culture.

Games devaluate too much, value is not related to quality but to things like antiquity and graphics.

It threw me off back in the Virtual Console days when 5 € por Super Mario Bros 3 or 10 € for Majora's Mask was steep.

Even 8 € for Rondo of Blood, a game that couldn't get on its original format for less than 150 € when it released on the VC, was considered expensive.

It completely ignores the quality of the game itself. It's old so it should be free it's a mentality i can't understand.
