Unpopular positive opinions

Popular opinion: these kinds of threads were the worst part of Era and will likely be the worst part of Famiboards, too

They were the worst part of era because people over there wasn't secretely able to respect others' opinions, and some opinions would devolve into skirmishes just for the sake of it.

That thread was supposed to be a DMZ, but people used it to be toxic from time to time, just like certain themes (framerate, Switch port threads, Xenoblade 2 threads, BotW threads and your weekly stealth console war thread among others)

----------------------------------------

Oh well, unpopular opinion time:

As experimental as it was, the N64 controller was an extremely well designed controller.

It didn't leave any input in a secondary position, it was clearly meant to have different grip positions depending on the game's primary directional input method and it was comfortable as fuck

You had both a 3D centric and a 2D centric device in the same controller. That hasn't happened again.

It sinks my heart when people consider the best N64 controller to be one that leaves the D-Pad in an absolutely residual position. I mean, sure, N64 doesn't have too many 2D games, but tell me how you properly play the existing ones with this

B000031KAI001.jpg

There's just no way.

And then there's the new controllers: The Tribute 64 and the Brawler 64, wich both miss the point of the N64 controller. Sure, it may have been designed around Mario 64, but it seemed to be also designed for every possible genre that touched the SNES and they expected to come to the N64, from 2D fighters to racers, you name it.

It only needed a more robust joystick.

that honestly was my intention with this thread (it was labeled as garbage galaxy for a reason), but I guess people don't like to read.
Why don't we keep it as an unpopular positive opinions thread?

Personally, it's said that i'm a guy with some strange gaming tastes. I wouldn't mind to have a thread where i can positively rant a little.

That, or be ready for a flood of strange appreciation threads by Reinhardt Schneider :v

Already changed it.

Sorry if I brought some toxicity to the place, it wasn't my intention.

No problem at all.

I have confidence in this site being almost devoid of toxicity. We the Nintendo crowd are a fairly positive and relaxed bunch, i think. We have our internal feuds but eh, it's all cool.

Naw the battle system isn’t the same at all with SMT and Persona. The press turn system in SMT completely changes the way you play the game. It’s far more challenging and intense compared to Persona imo. Having the ability to stack buffs with the enemy also having that ability changes the flow of the combat. It allows battles to either go by quick or long depending on how you utilize your attacks. Lastly SMT wants you to carefully analyze your opponent so you can make the right call. In fact there are times where dying is necessary in that it allows you to learn from your mistakes to make better calls when you fight the boss again. Nothing like that happens in Persona in fact buffs aren’t as vital as they are in SMT. A good example is the Matador fight in Nocturne as it’s basically the first real fight that teaches you what SMT is all about.

SMT is definitely a series where it’s gameplay is praised and talked about.
Yes, those are differences between the two but my point was that I would be surprised that they would be a dealbreaker for anyone. Like on a macro level, both are dungeon crawlers with a battle system that rewards you for hitting enemy weaknesses. The games’ structure may be different but the progression loop of fusing demons and such is pretty much the same. Even if you say both series are actually separate from the start due to the games’ names in Japan, both still share a lot, I mean you have the same demons and the same spells. Some series can differ a lot more between entries but here they pretty much share a base. When you hear about someone liking SMT but not Persona the first thing you hear about isn’t things like challenge and stacking buffs, they will always roast the setting and characters first

I think Sun and Moon are among the best Pokemon games (region, story, lore, music, new mons, aesthetic). I just love it.
In a few years a bunch of children are going to be screaming about how soulful S/M were and how evil Gamefreak has lost its touch and is trying to erase Gen VII from existence. Same thing that happened with Gen V.

I liked X and Y, or specifically Y. PokeFrance was neat to explore, Mega Evolutions felt cool, and it brought me back into the series after it had fallen off my radar since diamond and pearl. Yeah, I’m like the super casual player who goes through the main campaign and that’s it, but even the cheesy over the top villain felt kind of fun to me in how they seemed to lean into it. Death Bird was also a cool legendary.

Put me on the camp that also loves X and Y. Skating around was cool, I liked the friend safari, it brought us character customization and it had the best online to this day. Plus, wondertrade!

XY are lowkey my favorite games, but part of that is due to the online experience.

I mean, i love the games overall, but getting that one at launch day and playing every day while connected to the internet was magical

People challenging and asking you for trades in real time, some rivalries were created and you could see where in the story were some players thanks to their teams (both Pokemon and levels), and we kept raising and raising our teams until we all reached level 100

It was magical.

In that regard, SWSH was a huge dissapointment, i expected another PSS from the Y Comm but no dice.

Ace Attorney: Justice For All/AA2 executes its story really well, with each case reinforcing the game's themes, and effectively positions Phoenix Wright as a character to transition from the first game to the third. This game is generally considered the black sheep of the original AA trilogy but it ties the whole thing together.

I actually legitimatedly like Waluigi as a character. I would have been happy with him as the final Smash character reveal. I’m still hoping a Waluigi centered game releases within my lifetime.

Idk if it’s an unpopular opinion but like

Is it me or JRPGs are never really debated about their gameplay, people seem to solely prefer a game over another mostly based on things like story, characters and themes

For example the average FFIX fan will always gush about how it goes back to the medieval setting and it’s Sakaguchi’s favorite and the protagonist isn’t emo therefore it’s better than VII or VIII

But all three of those games are ATB RPGs where you learn skills by equiping things, you have multiple discs, you get huge story dumps during the last discs, you have a very important minigame, you have Chocobos and you have some kind of secret in the corner of the map. The three games are very similar, if you like one you should like the other two but people gotta be drama queens on the internet, they want to make other people know what kind of fan they are so they will often draw lines in the sand like this. Same thing with people that like SMT but dislike Persona, the games literally have the same battle and progression systems minus minor differences
Ok I was with you until the end there, but like, half of Persona's gameplay, the social and calendar stuff, isn't in SMT, so it's pretty easy to understand why someone would like one and not the other from a gameplay standpoint

It's not you. If you ask jrpg fans about their dream game they will tell you stuff like "adult persona" or "final fantasy, but with M-Rated".

Even Earthbound's status as a classic owes a lot to its aesthetic (which is pretty unique among all media).

The vast majority of Sonic games are good if not great, the only true bad games in the franchise are 06 and Shadow.

I think we're in a bit of gaming renaissance with the amount of diverse and quality games we're seeing today. Like I legitimately feel that even owning just one of any system can keep you satisfied if you keep your mind open a little

I have a huge soft spot for them because I think Alola is one of the coolest regions, I love tropical settings in video games. I also like how it actually changed up the structure of the games, the trial system was really cool. They don't hold up as well as some of the earlier gens on replay, and USUM is probably the weakest "third game" to date, but they're still right below gens 2, 4, and 5 for me.

I have a lot but I'll just keep it brief for now.

Super Mario 3D Land is is hella underrated, and I like it a lot more than its sequel. I actually largely prefer the linear 3D marios over the sandbox titles.

Castlevania 64 wasn't particularly good, but it had the right idea. If they had worked on improving it with proper sequels, we could have potentially gotten a great 3D take on Castlevania.

1. If Other M wasn't tied to the Metroid IP, it would probably be viewed as a cult classic.

2. Star Fox Assault was flawed and far from perfect. But it provided a blueprint for how the Star Fox franchise could evolve.

Arwing gameplay + 3rd person shooter gameplay = a great concept for online multiplayer.

wait is this unpopular or just understated? like endless ocean appeals to like 10 people on this green earth but those 10 people love the hell out of it

I am one of those 10
You are absolutely right lol

Chances are the other eight lurk here already. I needed them to know we see them, we hear them.

The Witcher 3 has good combat. I always see people slamming the game for its combat, but I genuinely enjoyed it a lot. I was kinda flabbergasted when I went online and saw all the hate for it.

I like it too, it's a to the point, no nonsense combat system with modifiers in form of oils and potions.

Nowadays it feels like a game needs to have Platinum-like combat to be considered good

Honestly, I agree. My only problem with Sun And Moon is how linear they are. Everything else as you mentioned above were all top notch, probably my second favourite set of games after gen 5 (though I never played US/UM).

Assault's multiplayer is so fun, I hope Nintendo revisits what they and Namco had done, one way or another.

I loved DK64! I really hope it comes to NSO
I too am a DK64 apologist 👀 it’s the only collectathon I owned on 64 since I was only into multiplayer games at the time. I didn’t own Mario 64 or either of the Banjo games so I wasn’t “over it” by the time DK64 came around.

Man I need to get these games out of my backlog!

Can I just add, I am glad the Wii U exists because it lets me use it as a Wii with a HDMI cable and plug it in to my modern TV.

I need something like that for all my old systems.

I’m right there with you. The first time I played Moon in 2016, I got angry at the game because I felt it was claustrophobic, but I really think I just let the fanbase’s negativity get to me.

I decided to give ORAS, SM and USUM a chance again and I’m so glad I did. I actually liked the cutscenes in Moon, the story, the UBs, and how the world felt alive. It made me realize I should just ignore the “critics” and play the games for what they are and not what fans think they should be. Made me appreciate them even more.

Nintendo did Sushi Striker dirty with its release window and lack of marketing. E3 drowned the game :(
I remember the switch port beginning to exist during a random morning. The original announcement was for the 3ds version.

Anyway the theme song is really good:
