Wario is ugly. How can people like this fat guy? Probably the most overrated video game character. /s

Breath of the wild is the most overrated Zelda, most of the game is dull, the dungeons are uninspired and copy and paste, the overworld is too empty and boring, and the side quests (korok seeds) are the most waste of time quests in gaming.

mirror's edge catalyst isn't that bad. it's still got the mirror's edge flavor in the places that count and running around the city is fun.

Also need to get this out of my chest but: Mario 64 has aged bad visually.

I don't how much the rest of you know about video game graphics (I'm an expert), but polygonal graphics actually tend to age worse than 2d graphics.

Idk if it's that unpopular or not but I'm really bummed that you can't date Riuji in Persona 5.

Also GTA V isn't as good as people make it to be.

Im really not interested in the n64 games on switch because i really don’t want to play them on anything other than a CRT. Still looks great on a crt with an rgb mod.

tried it on the switch and played it for like 20 minutes before realizing I hated playing it this way

I didn't play the whole of Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3, but just with the mechanics you have early in the game: there's no way in hell they're better than 4.

Also Resident Evil for is one of the greatest games ever made, has some of the best graphics of the PS2/GCN era and is still great to play to this day.

Metroid: Other M has good bones and could be reworked into a good game.

It would require minor changes to gameplay, but they'd have to gut the plot and cutscenes.

The game's real problems are it's treatment of Samus specifically, and of women in general.

You'll see me argue about this in every thread that brings up Other M.

I don't understand how people play games for 100+ hours then claim they hate them.

world of warcraft, league of legends, animal crossing new horizons

all games that hack your fomo to keep you coming back

I managed to kick my new horizons addiction but it took the slow asphyxiation of the game's community due to the lack of updates

I absolutely loathe Danganronpa 1.

Story was stupid, didn’t enjoy the actual gameplay, and not only did I not like any of the characters, I actually found their designs ugly and off putting.

I was excited to try it after all the praise and it basically killed any interest in the rest of the series for me.

Skinnerbox games I kinda get, but people will talk about how much they hate Persona 5 but played it all the way through and I don't understand why.

ah, yeah

JRPG fans seem to be pretty susceptible to the sunk cost fallacy with their time because so many of their favorite games are dogshit until 50 hours in

I say this having a JRPG fan sister whom I love dearly

I think part of it may be that a lot of people probably don't dislike games as much as you'd think from the way they talk about them. I know that's very presumptuous of me lol, but I've personally felt many video game fans (like anime fans and probably most fandoms) have trouble articulating opinions with a nuance beyond "this is shit" and "this is amazing." Hate's a pretty strong feeling to put up with something that long lol.

i can get behind this. i like warioware but i MUCH prefer his old platformer games (the virtual boy game is so, so good). i wish we got some goofy weirdo wario platformers again. 😔

There are very, very few remakes in gaming.

3 examples of genuine remakes:
Link Between Worlds is a remake of LttP.
Metroid Prime is a remake of Super Metroid.
Silent Hill Shattered Memories is a remake of Silent Hill.

Almost everything that is labelled as a remake or remaster is simply a touched-up port.

Don't bother engaging with the above view; it's a hill upon which I will die.

This is the opposite of my view that, because video games aren't music, there are no remasters and everything is a remake instead

Yakuza 6 is far and away above the rest of the series by miles (haven't played Kiwami 2 yet, I started with 3 in the PS3 days and then went to 0->K1 after 6). The story is emotional and fun and full of life and the combat is just a blast. The other games are good but forgettable, 6 is a masterpiece.

Pokemon Snap on the N64 is better than New Pokemon Snap. New is just bogged down by nonsense that takes up too much time and is filled to the brim with "content" that seems tedious to complete in its entirety. The original Snap was a wholly unique and fun little game where you can see everything it has to offer in a day and feel like you've never experienced anything like it before afterwards and part of me wishes it stayed that way.

Games don't "age". Part of me is glad that forums are mostly exclusively an older end millennial thing because I'd be driven up the wall by a bunch of zoomers claiming N64 and Gamecube games that they probably tried on emulators on a laptop without the hardware the game was designed around for 30 minutes aged poorly.

Symphony of the Night should've been a spinoff.

Nintendo's development groups waver between "formulaic" and "afraid of becoming formulaic to the point of self-sabotage". They make the same Animal Crossing and 2D Mario games over and over, but we can't get a new F-Zero because they can't come up with something new to bring to the table?

Playing games in the original Japanese is vastly overrated, there are lots of cases where the localised versions are elevated by better writing.

I agree with all of these. But, is it a common opinion that actually playing games in Japanese is better? Maybe saying that localizations shouldn't always stick closely to the source script would be controversial (though I'd agree with it), but the idea that actually playing games in Japanese is better is an opinion I've only heard from a couple people who literally studied Japanese in college.

I prefer Mario over Luigi. Main reason being that he's a very cheerful and optimistic fellow, and is backed by the amazing performances and voice acting by Charles Martinet. When he gets the chance to flex his vocal chords to impersonate Mario during greeting sessions, it elevates Mario to a high level that makes him quite likeable. It is also because Mario is my go-to character in many Mario games, since he's the main man. Plus, Mario games tend to include his friends for multiplayer games even his arch-nemeses, which goes to show that he's a very inviting fellow. Luigi, on the other hand, only accepts clones of himself for multiplayer (my belief is that the main guest for New Super Luigi U was not Luigi, but Mario but he couldn't make it, hence the striking of Mario's name in the title).

Some may say that preferring Mario is popular, but even on this very boards itself, it is clear that Luigi is more liked, not helped by cherry-picking scenes of Mario at his worst and Luigi at his best.

Thank you for reading.

100% in this. I get Steam offers a better service and, given the same conditions, I always will choose Steam over Epic. But I don't get waiting a year to play a game you want just because it's not on Steam, or worst, straight up not playing just because it's on Epic Store.

storefront wars, in a way, seem more silly than console wars.

I always try to wait out EGS exclusives simply because I have no respect or trust in Epics history with PC gaming. They abandoned PC gaming for consoles while Valve took the risk and invested in Steam despite the piracy problems.

Feels like Sweeney got jealous of all the money Valve makes and decided to join the party and now he hates that Epic wasn't earlier with EGS.

The Igavanais add very little of value to the Metroid formula and the original ones really only manage to be great games due to their solid implementation of said formula and the fact that the Castlevania IP is bursting with charm

Take that out and you get Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, possibly one of the most bloated games I've ever played. It tries to fit like, 7 different unnecessary systems into like, a 12 hour run time and boy does it not work

while nintendo switch has a lot of good games and is on a whole better and more healthy than the wii u, on a system gui basis it has objectively less nintendo soul than the wii u/3ds with lack of eshop music, miiverse, customization, cool integrated f2p games like rusty, badge arcade, etc.

- I don't understand why people begging for F-Zero to come back. Why shouldn't Nintendo create a brand new high speed racer with new characters? Why does it have to be Falcon and his friends? Personally I find their designs, Goroh included, pretty silly. Just let Nintendo to create more new characters ffs.
- I also don't understand the craziness surrounds Mother 3. I played the fan translated version and it was ok, not super special. I mean, people are begging Nintendo to localize this but same people ignored another JRPG from the same devs released on DS: Magical Starsign. Now that was some quality and heart warming JRPG.
- I enjoyed Other M. Not perfect but enjoyable 3D platformer. I don't give a rats ass about the story, don't care if it's garbage.

Yeah, how about bringing back with anthropomorphic animals as drivers instead of outdated designs? Current F-Zero cast look like they're a part of GI Joe Universe. Animals always are better, plus Smash has too many human characters we need a balance.

And animals mean there will be more plushies to buy!

I don't really disagree about F-ZERO's characters but I hope you understand that the demands for F-ZERO stem from the very specific way that the game feels

- IMO
Octopath Traveler's design is underappreciated.

The idea of a non-linear JRPG is just really cool to me in the same way BotW brought a lot of non-linear design to people's minds for open world adventure games. Octopath has obvious flaws, but the structure itself is just really interesting to me.

1. I think Digital Foundry is one of the worst things to happen to gaming despite being an enthusiast and loving the tech behind hardware and software and enjoying the presenters.

It’s peak internet hyperbole now and nothing but console warring fodder these days, to the point that I see too many people miss out on a good game. Worse is when someone says a game feels great to play or looks nice and the retort is “I’ll wait for digital foundry”. “Game dropped some frames. Trash”. If I had a dime for every time someone utters “looks rough” I’d be rich.

It’s not the content they make but the domino effect it created within the gaming community.

2. I enjoy actually playing video games.
