Howl is a turn-based tactical folktale set in mediaeval times. A sinister ‘howling plague’ has ravaged the land, turning all who hear it into feral beasts. You play a deaf hero plunging into danger in search of a cure.

Use your weapons and your wits to survive, planning up to six steps in advance to outmanoeuvre your opponents. As you plot out your attack, you’ll also craft your own prophecy, weaving a continuous piece of scripture during the fight.

The visuals of Howl are created through ‘living ink’, a flowing artstyle that paints the story as you play. Carve your way through a dark fairytale world, fighting and writing to rid the lands of the plague.

Available now on the eShop (14,99€, 12,99£, 14,99$), including free demo!

Waiting for early impressions here!
So I played for about an hour so far. The tactical gameplay is really engaging! It's rather simple in its nature so far, but it feels a lot like a puzzle game because you have to be very strategic about your every move and which attack to deploy when in order to finish a level completing all objectives. It's really fun so far! There are some very light RPG elements to it as well, in the sense that you can unlock skills to aid you in combat.

Only played in handheld mode so far, but it looks great, and it plays smooth. Early impressions point towards an easy recommendation if it sounds at all enticing.

Yeah I like the way it starts simple then becomes fairly complex fairly fast. It reminds me of Into the Breach in that you can reliably predict enemy actions, even whether they’ll move vertically or horizontally if equidistant, so you have all the information you need to plan

Finished up the demo, and bought the full game. Once it clicks and you understand all the rules in play, it’s so addictive, very much ‘I’ll give it one more go’. Rushing to save villagers before they turn into werewolves adds some really interesting choices, whether you play for speed, kill enemies, or save villagers. I like that they can move past a stage as long as you reach the exit then come back to clean it up with more abilities later.

Couldn't agree more! I redid some of the trickier maps multiple times in a row to see whether I could do it all with the abilities I currently had if I played it a bit smarter, or whether it was a case of having to come back later. It's nice to see that being a thing this early in the game, and has me really curious to see how it will continue to ramp up in complexity.

The only one in the demo I couldn’t completely finish was the beast lair at the bottom of the map, the one where you have to wipe out 8 werewolves in 4 turns. I can beat them all but the turn limit was a touch too harsh for me with what I had. That’s one I’ll return to with better kit I think! Maybe I need to be more aggressive and I’m sure you have to throw them into each other and the scenery, but it’s a tough start dealing with the opening 3.

I like the environmental effects, the changing battlefield, that’s very Into the Breach as well. Shoot an arrow through fire and not only will it kill the target, it leaves flames on the ground that last for one turn too.

Just gave that one a go, and I almost had it on my first attempt, to the point I'm half convinced it should be doable even without the second ability unlock in chapter 1. Or it could be designed in a way that makes it just not doable without it, even if you play it optimally. I haven't gone back to check yet, but I think the smoke bomb ability will make it trivial.

Overall, it's just immensely satisfying when it all clicks. Managed to finish the final map of the first chapter with a turn to spare, and it felt good.

This looks really good. I wasn't going to buy any games this month, but I may have to see if I can justify picking this one up.
