News Trails in the Sky The 1st announced, coming 2025

I've been tempted to dive into the series for awhile now. But I'm conflicted to start with this because the battle system is supposed to be based off the newest game.

From the trailer, it already seems like they've ditched the grid, so I'm hopeful it'll be a lot better.
The grid doesn’t mean anything here, the turn based combat is effectively still the same. You can move on the battlefield or attack.

For what it’s worth, Sky 1st is easily the simplest combat in the franchise, mostly because you’re constantly rotating party members and it’s built with smooth progression between each game in mind. You’re not gonna get any complex builds until 2nd and especially 3rd.

So do you no longer move automatically? That was the main thing I thought was silly about it, you couldn't actually choose where you were standing, so it didn't really add much.

I figured that there were a lot of contributing factors to it just not really amounting to much, most of which were situational/balance related and the later entries almost certainly ironed out. But the presence of the grid to run around on just made no sense to me when they actively did not let you really do anything with that space.

You still move automatically. The core combat is the same, you just now have full free movement rather than being restricted to a grid.

That holds true across every game in the series. Any changes they make to combat across entries is through new mechanics or changing how orbments work.

That's a shame. I guess it's an improvement in that it doesn't really give the impression you should have control anymore? Anyway, hoping they at least rebalanced it a bit, there was plenty to the combat even if you only got to play with most of it during certain parts of the game. It's just that some abilities were a lot more useful than others (I think Estelle herself starts to fall off in usefulness eventually iirc).

I didn’t say it looks like Genshin Impact.

It absolutely does. It totally has that mobile game look. I don’t know why people are reading it me saying it has bad graphics. That’s not what I said.

I think everything can basically be a mobile-game look these days because diminishing returns in graphical fidality are ever closer but can you tell me what the requirements are for the typical mobile game look?

Giving it some thought... The typical 3D mobile game would be a quickly made game that is purely focussed on generating revenue without any focus spent on creativity or artistic value. Basically stock art assets unless the games' main selling point are the cute or cool graphics in which case... They can be high-resolution high polygon character assets with mediocre maps. Or maybe the gane can look stunning with less clutter on the screen at once?

...What exactly does the average mobile game look like then? It's too broad of a market with too many kind of games to call something mobile tier, it's entirely up to what specific subset of mobile games someone has in their mind.

Another cool thing is that it’s probably gonna come out after Switch 2.

I’ve always bought Trails games elsewhere due to the hardware constraints, but I’d jump on a Switch 2 version of this.
Day 1 purchase for me if I can get a Switch 2 version.

Well, day 1 regardless of where it's coming, but I'd prioritize getting it on Switch 2.

I gave up on getting into the whole interconnected saga of these games years ago while waiting for Switch releases, so this is nice.

But, people more learned than I, would this equip me to play more of the series on Switch?
Yes it would. Assuming they are also remaking SC and the 3rd (and they very likely are*) the only games you'd be missing would be Cold Steel 1 and 2. So you could comfortably play both the Sky trilogy and the Crossbell duology in full.

*these are the second and third game in the Trails series. Together with FC (i.e. The 1st) they comprise the Sky Trilogy.

It seems to have some QoL features like instant battle transitions and free movement but also some differences like no action combat, for example. It’ll be probably be closer to the original game with some changes to modernize it.

The remake is definitely a bit more stylized, which I really like. The current artstyle isn’t bad or anything, but it is pretty generic.

Characters also actually look their age, which is a big improvement.

This was a huge surprise!

I had the OG Steam release installed on my Deck with all the essential mods, ready to finally play it this year. But now I need this one!

Please have a physical release in Europe!

It's funny how it was the best announcement for me personally in this direct, but it only lasted like 5 seconds. I'll happily replay any of the Sky games with this kind of update!

Awesome, I'm not too familiar with these games and I heard a bunch of conflicting things online. I've only played Falcom's action RPGs so far, but I've been holding off on playing Trails for some reason.

Shocking that this exists, but very glad, I have waited a decade to try these games out, I hope this is a good remake (and that the other two Sky games come after)

My friend has been dying for me to play the original, but I’d only have played on handheld and don’t own or intend to buy a Deck. Really glad this is happening.

Fingers crossed it gets some kind of a boost on Switch 2 - or better yet a Switch 2 version. These same visuals but 1080p handheld/4K TV would be 🔥

It was certainly a choice to give a new Atelier game top billing instead of this one.

No disrespect to Atelier or anything, but I think it's firmly super-niche while Trails is starting to escape that a little bit to maybe the 'Tales of' tier of JRPG popularity.

They’re around the same level, with Ryza putting Atelier a bit higher. But if that trailer is any indication, it won’t be higher much longer.

Trails fans are just louder in general.

Could always be that KT paid more.

For the English direct, I don't think there's anything to actually show. Being relegated to b-roll and not having a full separate trailer even after the direct points to Nintendo getting nothing

The most likely scenario is that they did not have the japanese trailer translated so they opted for the none verbal sections.

Also while Atelier is niche, Ryza trilogy alone has sold 1/4 of the total sales of all Trails games. Trails fans are probably more online than Atelier fans.

Falcom tweeted a little bit ago, I wont share it cause its kinda of a spoiler for Kai, but I am surprise they havent said a thing 😅.

It is pretty crazy how no one has said anything since this morning's direct

Neither NISA or XSEED, or even Falcom themselves, posted anything, and that includes Japanese Twitter too
No usual post-direct multiplatform post etc

EDIT: and as I posted this Gematsu got the confirmation that NISA is not publishing it

I've been wanting to get into this series for a while, so this finally gives me a good reason to. I can't wait!

That's surprising, but I think it's a great title to release as a Switch exclusive. The original game has already been released on PC, PSP, PS3 and Vita.

I’m not counting on any sort of platform exclusivity yet. It doesn’t even have an official title as of now.

There’s a couple screenshots of the Bose region on the website, which is cool to see.

The official website only lists nintendo switch.

It might come to other platforms in the future, but probably not at launch.

Again, I think it’s too early to say anything definitive. We barely know anything about this game and what kind of marketing it will get.

Until they explicitly say it’s an exclusive, or marketing really kicks into gear and there’s no sign of PC or PS5, I’m not taking anything at face value.

Maybe Nintendo is providing some funding/distribution? They could produce and distribute physical copies for Falcom like they've done for Bethesda and Take Two in the past. Maybe Nintendo will also fund/produce a dub for the game.

This seems to be early in production. I'm guessing we will not get this before both Daybreak 2 and Kai launch in the west. And now I get why they're speeding up localization process, Daybreak 2 is currently dated for "early" 2025. Kai for summer and this for fall.

We will find out about the global publisher and other target consoles as the development progresses.

Ah, I see. Although I will point out that this isn't technically new news if that's who you're referring to. Falcon has already talked about that particular character and a few others a month or so ago.
I know its not, but you never know who might not want the info. Thats why in the Trails thread stuff like that is under the spoiler tag

It only got announced in the sizzle reel because Falcom accidentally sent over of the gaming running on Switch 2 so Nintendo just threw it in there quickly and hopes no one notices it. Thankfully, it's a Falcolm game so people won't be able to tell.

I kid. I kid.

I guess this is as good a reason as any to finally start the series? I've had the original game sitting in my Steam library for years at this point but I've never tried it despite meaning to on several occasions.
