Discussion Three year old emails surface from FTC case about Microsoft’s interest in buying Nintendo

EDIT: added full email
That won't happen but to see MS think this is sad and it makes me not like them as a company that can create games without buying studios all the time.

Microsoft buying Nintendo would probably cause me to quit AAA gaming altogether and just play indies and VR. It would be that bad.

I was starting to feel more positive towards Microsoft's game race recently, too ...

It is an old email and MS has gotten the message by now hopefully. Truthfully, this is probably stuff extraordinarily big companies talk about casually all the time. But it's so fucking scummy and annoying, especially knowing they were planning to acquire so many publishers ...

Fully expected this to be a shitpost, but wow, homeboy really thinks this is more than fantasy land frolics. I mean, good for Phil Spencer. We all need a little escapism from the dredges of real life.

It's a bold move to say that Nintendo's future exists off their own hardware literally during the summer of Animal Crossing, while they're at the height of Infinite's Craig meme, but Phil's a bold guy.

This is just typical corporate backroom talk. Stupid but nothing will come of it, Nintendo is ridiculously profitable and have no interest in selling.

“Nintendo should go third party” talk with high-level execs is wild to see.

There are people out there who really take that seriously.

This email was written after Animal Crossing was released, lol.

“It’s just taking a long time for Nintendo to see that their future exists off their own hardware.”

This is like the wildest shit I’ve read in a while. Switch has been straight up Stone Cold Stunning Xbox hardware sales. What are you even on about, Phil?

Kinda makes you rethink all the collaborations Nintendo and Microsoft has had in recent years....

Entitled brats if you ask me. I'd rather Nintendo go bankrupt and self-destruct all the ip before being acquired by MS.

Yep my list of why I think Microsoft joining the game console business was bad gets a new entry. The list already has the entries: Started with paid online, started with achievements, startet with timed exclusives (IIRC), buying other studios and publishers left and right (because the management is too stupid to manage their own studios right) and the new one of trying to get shareholders in another company to try to buy it easier (if I understood that text in the OP correct). US American businesses are the worst dystopian capitalism shit.

I agree with most of this, but why are achievements bad? Most people like them?

exactly. Nintendos future depends on their hardware, otherwise Nintendo is just another sega. The NES, N64, GC, Wii and Switch. GB/DS too were innovative and made Nintendo a household name

Nintendo games finally on good hardware and maybe good online?

While I would love both of that I wouldn’t want it at the cost of Microsoft owning Nintendo.

'good hardware'. As always, complete nonsense, as if the other consoles aren't just as much of a joke compared to PCs.

In any case, it doesn't matter, Nintendo and their output only work as they have done in any sense through the whole deliberate design of every facet of the process, including designing the hardware.

If Nintendo stops doing that, all you get is in a few years a complete falling apart of the company culture and development style, same as happened to Sega.

If all you play is BOTW/TOTK and mario odyssey, you might be alright, but everything outside of those 10m+ sellers would quickly drop off the map

Like I get it, MS saw how the WiiU and 3DS were doing and thought "Nintendo is doomed, lets see when we can capitalize", but it's hilarious now knowing how badly MS has been doing at selling hardware. Switch is in its 7th year and Series S/X still struggles to outsell it.

It is my list and I don‘t like system wide achievements if they are just a score or trophy pics. Those achievements are just noise and add nothing of value. They just trigger our ape brains with fear of missing out. But that is just my opinion

They didn't even say this then though. The email dates are during the peak of animal crossing crazy hype, lol.

Thing is, this statement wasn't made during that timeframe. It was made directly after New Horizons came out. So it's still extremely dumb.

I don’t want a Nintendo owned by Microsoft. We’ll probably lose the quirky experiments like Ring Fit and ARMS, and MS will probably think streaming/Game Pass devices will be a good enough substitute for true portable play. Not to mention MS has been hit-or-miss with handling their studios.

So nah. No thanks. And anyway a Nintendo acquisition was and still remains a moon shot.

I don't even like that phill is thinking about this as a impossible dream. Just no, leave Nintendo alone.

"the unfortunate situation is that Nintendo is sitting on cash"

Phill upset that Nintendo has too much money.

“Nintendo’s own future exists off their own hardware,"

Says the conpany who sells less than half hardware than Nintendo.

This is gross stuff, and would make me just leave gaming if Nintendo goes away.

Don't let the troll get ya

So having a different opinion from yours is being a troll? You don't even know me. Is that how it works here?

I'd rather it be a troll than a console warrior! At least trolls are dumb on purpose 😂

I'm neither. Adding to what I said above, if someone have a different opinion from yours, it's either a troll or a console warrior? It must be a dumb person or someone pretending to be one?

Good to see how people really are around here, although I constantly see mods trying to make it seem like a nice place.

Even if cost wasn't an issue, buying Nintendo would still be extremely complicated. Japan doesn't allow for foreign companies to buy Japanese companies and Nintendo has ties to multiple other companies like Comcast NBC Universal and The Pokemon Company. It would be a gigantic time and money sink.

It does kind of show you the whole "we're a good guy" PR personality is a bit of BS. Phil wants to go for the jugular ... and really as well he should, but don't confuse things with these companies wanting to be "friends". This isn't a summer camp.
