Third Person 3D Metroid should not be off the table just because of Other M.

Like…. It’s literally the most common type of single player action games these days, yet I see no one suggesting that Metroid should do it again, and I have to feel like it’s because of the elephant in the room being Other M.

I’d say if anything, Other M is a failed experiment but proves the concept could work. It’s so easy to see how it could be fixed - better controls being the biggest. But it’s a fun flashy action game and that movement fits Samus well.

I’d actually be as bold as to say Metroid 6 should be 3D. New saga, new dimension! I mean SURELY you all have heard the “2D Metroid isn’t unique anymore Blah Blah Blah so many 2D indie Metroidvanias”…. well this would fix that issue and allow Metroid to revolutionize the genre again!

I just think it’s sad if we let the potential of a 3rd person 3D Metroid just sit there because the concept of being remotely similar to other m is uncomfortable. It would really give Metroid another way to stand out in the genre Alongside prime.

If you consider the argument that metroid 1,2,3,4,5 are the only mainline games and everything else is a spin-off, then the mainline Metroid series technically hasn’t made the 3D jump : P

I’m definitely onboard with Metroid 6 being a third person 3D game. I think they could amazing things, especially with Samus’ moveset. I agree that Other M showed that it can be done, it just needs to be done well. I’d love to see it happen

Yep, this is certainly correct.

A proper 3D third person Metroid without a weird control scheme and the rest of Other M's plentiful baggage would be, at the very least, very interesting

I would kill for a proper third person Metroid title. Having Samus move around a "wide linear" game world like this would be amazing:

I will add that it does feel unlikely that Nintendo will attempt something similar anytime soon with how Other M was received

Maybe if both Dread and Prime 4 do well they'd be willing to experiment, but I imagine they'd try with a side-series first before trying to make Metroid 6 or 7 in that style

completely agree OP. i've wanted that ever since I heard prime was originally concepted as a 3rd person game (pictured).

edit: now that i think of it i'm pretty sure halo combat evolved was also concepted as a 3rd person game. imagine if two of the defining first person perspective games were 3rd person.

I want to see it happen, but also it's kind of tricky to pull off. I think you'd need a future Nintendo console to do it right as it would probably require larger more expansive environments for it to look right if you also expect Samus to be leaping around as per usual. I wouldn't be surprised if they try again at some point though, assuming the upcoming slate of games sell well.

Hi everyone ! (first post)
I can't find the source (I'm almost certain it was on Era courtesy of Dark Cloud) but I do remember a high-level developer at Retro (one of the ones who left and came back) speaking about the dream he had to make Metroid Prime 4 a game that switches between the 1st and 3rd-person perspective. He also elaborates about the environment he wanted to be Samus' next playground.
Personally, I do think that Nintendo's characters in general and Samus in particular are so well designed that it's highly counterproductive to have them stuck behind a 3rd-person view...

I agree. Always wanted a Metroid game that plays a little like Vanquish. The only barrier I see is that I don't think it's very likely for three Metroid subseries to exist at the same time and I'm not sure I'm ready to give up Prime or 2D Metroid.

You might be talking about Kynan Pearson. He talked about wanting to see Metroid in 3rd person following more of a BotW footsteps. He doesn’t work at Retro anymore.

A Metroid game à la Splatoon would be a great fit IMO because it will have the shooting AND the platforming part that is somehow missing in the Prime series.

I don’t think Other M should be a deterrent. It would be good to have something different in the 3D space from Prime.

I actually don’t think a failure of a game, from the past, should be a deterrent to try it again in the future. You learn from the past so when you try again you can, hopefully, do a better job. I’d also like to see DK 64 type of game given another attempt.

Metroid Federation Force 2 incoming...
PS : Chibi-Robo! : Zip Lash 2 ?
NB : I played and liked all these games for what they are, and yes we all need a new 3d DK game in our lives.

Dark Cloud, Phendrift and all the friendly people I used to see on Era, it's a real pleasure to see all of you in this warm place.
During all these years I only made 3 posts on Era (the first post 3 days ago) because I enjoyed simply reading the conversations you all had about eveything Nintendo (Nintendo fan since 1986).
This is why it's wonderful to have a Nintendo centric forum with all of you.
PS : hope I will engage a bit more with you this time around !

Thanks :giggle:
NB : "To get to conversate, you’d have to take the noun “conversation,” remove the suffix -ion, add an “e” at the end, and use it as a verb. That process is called back-formation, and the result is often a word that’s considered nonstandard—at least for a while. Conversate is still nonstandard, which means you should probably avoid it in situations when proper writing matters."

It certainly seems like the main takeaway from Other M's reception was "oh, it has to be 2D next time" so I don't expect it. It would be nice though.

It shouldn't but it also shouldn't be forced. If they want to keep 3D Metroid first-person then that's perfectly fine.

After all, Prime is basically the only first-person game in Nintendo's portfolio.

Yeah, but realistically that won't happen. If it will be in place for something, it will obviously be for Prime.

I also rather not lose 2D Metroid. I still prefer most 2D installments to the Prime games.

well not necessarily, if Other M was successful, that was a Sakamoto game, which means the 3D third person formula likely would’ve carried the main series, not the prime spin-offs.

This is the issue I have. In principle I think third person 3D Metroid is still an excellent idea waiting the right execution.

The thing I'd say here is, we don't really know what Metroid is going to be after Dread. Maybe the next step in the mainline saga is going to involve more than a change in direction plotwise, and it might change things up in terms of perspective, too.

A good compromise would be to shelve the Prime series temporarily after 4, and then explore a 3rd person Metroid. Win-win.

I doubt it especially as Dread as a concept was always floating around in the background. If 3D Metroid was the future then I'd wager that Other M would've been Metroid 5 immediately.

In general, I also think of it more in terms of Nintendo's software strategy and planning. 2D Mario and 2D Zelda aren't dead just because the 3D games exist - Nintendo likes them to coexist. It is very likely they think the same with Metroid and most of their other franchises.

The execution was the problem for sure, because there's nothing inherently wrong with 3rd person Metroid where you can go into 1st person. Just having to stop dead in your tracks, point the wiimote to the screen. It just breaks all the flow, feels like such an afterthought. Even though it probably would have been x10 smoother if they hadn't limited the controls to just the wiimote.

After Prime 4, I hope they take time to rethink Metroid in 3D. Who knows, maybe 4 is already taking some steps in a different direction, maybe not.

I'm not opposed to the series being primarily 1st person, but I hope a little more action finds its way in. The melee counter would work fine in 1st person, so would a dash move/speed booster. 3D Metroid doesn't have to be slow paced.

That game being designed around just the Wiimote held sideways and having to turn it and point it at the screen mid game was so insane and I have a hard time imagining a game designed in a similar style will start from the go immediately handicapping itself with a completely unnecessary design decision virtually any other game will almost certainly be better by default

like I don’t know what sort of scheme on switch they could come up with that would be more unnecessary other than having to pull out a LABO Samus helmet and slap your joycon IR scene in every time you want to scan the environment or something

I don't think Other M was just some unmitigated disaster that prevented third-person Metroid from happening again. It's more like....Metroid Prime is so successful, doing anything else doesn't feel like it'd make as much sense. It'd be like doing third-person Halo. I guess with Metroid it would make more sense to try new things though.

I hope they don’t temporarily shelve it. They’re finally bringing the series back. If Prime 4 is a success, then it should be continued for another installment or 2.

That's what I've been saying all this time. There's in fact a good game in Other M but is all buried by a huge amount of issues that could have been easily avoided with a better control scheme and retconning the story as the actual first mission of Samus.

I would personally prefer if they make Third-Person Metroid in its own sub-series. Other M is not even part of the numbered series so there's a precedent for that already.
