This poll question is boring, because there is an obviously correct answer.

Better poll question: is it styled SMTV or SMT V?
Good question

I go with SMT V because the former looks like it says SM and then TV lol.

I never played an SMT game, but with persona I played only the last one (not the royal version) and I liked it more than I though (never been much into turn based battles). Curios to hear reviews because from what i saw until now it looks great

I dunno if they showed an area map in previous gameplay videos but they did in the TGS footage last night and while it looks linear it's huge! Goddamn am I excited for this game. Open pre-orders already for PAL regions Nintendo!

Every time I see more about this game, it just further cements how good it looks and how much I need it. I know it's kind of ridiculous to claim something is going to be your GOTY without even playing it yet, but I feel fairly confident that that'll be the case with this game, given how much I loved SMTIV and what we've seen of this so far.

There's more turn based combat, but I like Press Turn (what III, IV, IV:A, V, and the Digital Devil Saga games) better than the modern Persona combat. They do share many similarities, such as extra actions for hitting weaknesses.

SMT doesn't have a calendar and has a structure of going dungeon to dungeon, with not as much focus on the human characters. Nocturne HD is available now on Switch, PS4, and Steam, but at this point I would probably just wait for V since it's only a little over a month away. Definitely play Nocturne HD if you like V though!

The fact that this game is coming out a week before Endwalker is killing me so much on the inside. I bought a Switch just to play this so now I'm gonna have to delay playing this for a while because FFXIV always takes priority for me :/

I haven't really watched any gameplay videos and trailers aside from the teaser trailer so I'm going in fully blind.

Switch pulling a miracle. To be fair Catherine look pretty nice for a PS3/360 game I think, but the scope of that game is smaller.

Games like Catherine and Persona 5 look great but you can tell that the games are small in scope. For example while Persona 5 has lots of content a majority of it is made from static cutscenes with visual novel esque scenes. While the dungeons are a big upgrade to previous installments they are still linear and condensed plus outside of that areas still feel small. They are good games especially for the time they were made and having a strong art style helps gives it a strong identity. However, SMT V just feels leagues bigger in terms of cutscene direction and the scope of areas.

Then again I feel like we’ve also underestimated Team Maniax ability to make games that are incredible for the platform they are on. To me SMT 4 on 3DS felt ambitious for a 3DS game. Playing that game just feels unreal. The team at Atlus are really ambitious so it isn’t surprising SMT V turned out the way it is.

The non calendar structure appeals more to me also, I checked the nocturne HD, but had. a lot to play at the time and though I could wait for the "announcement" of the V to check a more modern game

I got the Fall of Man edition so yes I am hyped. I enjoyed my first few hours with SMTIII but then got hooked on Guild Wars 2. So yeah. Waiting for SMTV :D

Oh absolutely, same for Persona 5, honestly. It's just that, yeah, their scope and design was much more limited so they "feel" older than they really are. Still great games tho

I really like the artstyle they chose - no JRPG looks like this.

I don't know if I'll get the game, as I am not the biggest fan of turn-based combat, but I'll for sure listen to the whole OST just like I did with IV.

Yeah 4 had fantastic production values for a 3ds game. 5 feel analogous to that, but for Switch. The graphics and effort feel 1st party for sure. The demonic aesthetic is also top notch, so I’m excited to see how this game plays out.

Not a turn based RPG fan, but the SMT/Persona games manage to make combat fun.

I've never played anything from this series. Thinking about making this my Xmas game. But if I did, would I be horribly lost and confused without experience of its predecessors, either gameplay wise or storywise?

SMT series can be challenging gameplay-wise but how steep the learning curve depends mostly on your experience with turn-based RPG in general. Beside many QoL features have been added in since SMT IV to alleviate memorization.
Story-wise there's nothing to worry about since numbered SMT entries rarely connect to each other except two.

You should be fine since they've been adding lots of Qol features over time. Plus with SMT V they have said they added multiple difficulty options such as one where you just want to enjoy the story. Other than that V should be the most accessible game for newcomers. Also, the story is self-contained so no worries on that front.

I've never played a SMT game, but since this was an enigmatic feature of the iconic January 2017 presentation for me, I'm definitely wanting to experience it. However, I'm expecting mega difficulty. I'm also staying away from watching previews as I like going in near-unaware sometimes.

The game has three difficulty options from the start.

This will also be my first real SMT game. I sort of dabbled with SMT 3 HD recently but fell off of it. I might try to get back to it though before this game.

Speaking of Nocturne HD, is the content of the digital deluxe edition worth it? Thinking of picking it up, though I should probably start with V. Never played a SMT game so far, even though I own IV, IV:A and a bunch of remakes on 3DS (yeah, I know, I know, lol).

Not really. The only thing in there that's worth paying attention to is the Dante DLC (the Maniax pack). The Merciful difficulty is FREE DLC, the other DLCs are music for the world map and the usual Atlus bullshit DLC of "Here's an area where you get a ton of easy demons, here's one for easy XP, here's one for easy Macca"

Oddly enough just googling it, it's on Sale on PlayStation network and the Digital Deluxe is CHEAPER than the normal edition, so in this instance, I would say yes, it's worth it lol.

I got the digital deluxe myself, but the only other reason to really get it was back when it came out: to have 4 days early access to it. I was going out of town the weekend of that early access launch, so I went for the digital deluxe.

I am badly hyped with this game. I would like to reserve the premium edition but it's quite an impossible mission and I don't want to pay to scalpers.

Battle B2 from SMT IV is still one of my favorite tracks in the series. It has amazing energy and the first time you listent this banger is fighting against Minotaur. I love Infernal Kasumigaseki too, but it's infamous how few times you hear it in the game lol

Thanks a bunch! That's actually great news to me, as I prefer to go physical for story-focused single player games. :)

SMT 4 was always a game that I wanted to get into but just couldn't (always stopped after the first few hours). I still think I would love the series if I would just give it the time to get into. So i look forward to SMT V. So far it looks really exciting just the release date with pokemon just around the corner could still stop me from buying it.

This game has me so much hyped. Everything, from story to gameplay to demon designs has me absolutely drooling.

And also, don't forget the music! This level up banger makes you bob your head saying to yourself "yeah, I deserved that!" after beating a tough boss lol

I do hope they release a demo just so it can give people a better idea of what the game is like.

Well the skills, the whole concept of exploiting weaknesses is the same, and you should see similarities also with the dungeons, heck even the UI is very similar.

The atmosphere of course is completely different.

If you are ready for a little bit darker story and dive into the fusion systems (which are addicting as hell btw :) ), you'll probably enjoy this. But maybe wait for some reviews.

I think a darker story will be more enjoyable to me, if the gameplay/battle mechanics is similar enough then I should enjoy this one 😊

I hope this game turns out to be great once the impressions and reviews come in, mainly because that would be a great way to get into SMTV.
