The Pokemon Company confirms to Kotaku that Pokemon Legends Arceus is not a full open world game

Ah, that's disappointing... Although not entirely unexpected.

I hope it's more Xenoblade than Monster Hunter, there's not much purpose to explore in MH as the maps are arenas first and foremost. If exploring is still fun and filled with hidden things then I'm more okay with it
It’s definitely more like Xenoblade. I think the MH comparisons arise from having a central town act like a hub. A game can take inspiration from multiple sources, and in this case they are BOTW, Xenoblade and MH, not just one or the other

I can't remember the last time I entered an era pokemon thread, I can think of few things less fun lol

Not gonna lie I started auto blocking Pokemon threads on Era. Just wasn't worth it when it was the same back and forth all the time. Hopefully they don't get like that here.

From what I've seen, it's similar to Monster Hunter in the sense that

- It has a HUB to which you go back after completing a quest
- That HUB is probably the only big city of the game, and has all the facilities you need

But it's also similar to Xenoblade in the sense that

- Unlike Monster Hunter, this is one cohesive world where all regions are linked together
- It's focused on exploration and visiting the sights rather than rushing to defeat a monster like in MH

yeah that makes the most sense to me as well. I honestly can't wait to see an actual gameplay demo of this game just to solidify the gameplay loop since there are still a couple of mysteries, but I'm excited.

This is the first I'm seeing of the second image Serebii posted, and it got me real excited. I love that kind of grinding. Seeing the Pokemon use certain moves might be tedious, but everything else seems very doable.

Wasn't that known? Like, they showed on the second trailer that progression would be gated through quest completion. People thought it would be open-world?

If you only paid attention to the surface level stuff they released about this game you’d think it’s open world. People have been speculating it wasn’t since the second presents featuring the game though because that’s when we first saw the segmented world

This is a major problem with the "internet". People make assumptions and speculations and take them as FACT (why the do that, I dont know 🤷‍♀️) and when their assumptions don't pan out, they freak out. Has the Pokemon company at any time said Arceus is a open world game?

nope. though I'm not gonna completely blame people here. the gameplay footage looked very open and there's no way of telling how the game is or isn't segment in the footage

I think what's more dumb here is that a gaming media outlet had to reach out Pokémon Company for confirmation rather than see the marketing materials where this is showed clearly.

I mean its fair, and it should have been made clearer, but the statement did clarify that there would be multiple large open areas explorable, so I assume the areas themselves will be relatively open and there will be no internal gating within them, and thats great especially seeing how many sub areas just the opening area Obsidian fields has

You didn't answer my question though. :sneaky: Did at anytime they market it as open world?

I did answer your question with teh first sentence, they never said it was open world

the fact they can have flying in the areas shows that these areas are gonna be quite big. even the maps show that if the guesstimations of scale are correct. pretty much Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor combined. and there's 5 of these

I'm not sure what the problem is here truly , I have played several things like xenoblade, atelier, monster hunter stories 2 , that all have segmented maps and particularly for what is an rpg, especially one with a story that isnt just in the background, it works very well. Similarly I love monster hunter rise and think the level design, environments and how it all looks is some of the best to be found on the switch, these are all far from being "unambitious" games. I really wish folks would stop wanting a one size fits all approach to gaming, and let games do and figure out what works for them. I also find it funny this is only coming to a head now, I noticed it wasn't open world and clearly even trailers talked about areas being opened up as you progressed since the August trailer.

The last thing I want is to be associated with the angry nerds and other miserables, but the first trailer used a lot of BotW-like imagery:

The trailer pretty much says "You liked BotW? you are gonna like this"

Of course there is no reason to make a tantrum when the game isn't even out yet.

All I see in that trailer is Pokemon battles and people catching Pokemon. Remember that long before BOTW's final trailer came out, Nintendo/Miyamoto/Aonuma made it clear over and over again that BOTW is open world. As far as I can see, the Pokemon company didn't say anything of the sort, not even for one second. Some people may have thought it was open world by the trailer, but they were jumping the gun IMO. 🤷‍♀️

Game Freak with both swsh and legends, clearly liked botw and take influences from it. It's just a matter where imo, being influenced by a game doesn't mean having every element from it. Just like how botw itself supposedly has influences from skyrim etc. You can execute aspects from botw without being a seamless open world. It's also very clear from other trailers now it's influenced by games like monster hunter particularly I would say world with the "you are venturing into an uncolonized land with an expedition group and will study the local fauna" aspect. I have no doubts a subset of folks who liked botw and other games it will be influenced by will like Legends, so I don't necessarily think they have misled with how they have portrayed the game. Could they have from the onset said more specifically how the world is laid out? probably, but this is also a factor where, some of these distinctions matter more for fans and enthusiasts than actual game devs when it comes to execution of vision and intent.

So "people" suddenly love open world games again?

It depends on how it is, the structure can end up reminding a bit of Dragon Age Inquisition. You have your central hub and you gradually unlock new areas to explore.

As someone who is a fan of both MonHun and Xenoblade, this style of structure sounds really good to me.

The main issue with trying to do a full open world with a game like this is figuring out how to handle gating levels and such. It seems like after GSC's awful level curve that resulted from the Surf choice, Game Freak has been doing everything they can to straitjacket progression during the main storyline more and more (outside of Kanto, of course).

We'll see if this game can break the trend, but I'm not overly optimistic.

I don’t remember have problem with it right now, especially when it seems to be focused on catching Pokémon. I hope the field trip structure helps the story telling, considering how little to nothing we got from SwSh

I have no issues with this at all. I am still looking forward to this game.

they can always do level scaling and/or caps. like how competitive is always at lvl 50.
