The Pokemon Company confirms to Kotaku that Pokemon Legends Arceus is not a full open world game

Update, 10/8/2021, 6:00 p.m. ET: The Pokémon Company has sent Kotaku a statement confirming the Monster Hunter-esque structure of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Jubilife Village will serve as the base for surveying missions. After receiving an assignment or a request and preparing for their next excursion, players will set out from the village to study one of the various open areas of the Hisui region. After they finish the survey work, players will need to return once more to prepare for their next task. We look forward to sharing more information about exploring the Hisui region soon.

I think we all figured this was the case after like the second trailer.

It doesn't need to be entirely open world to feel like an adventure. It just has to feel huge and have lots of cool places to explore. Xenoblade 2 is a great example of this design done well.

I’ve had a theory that it would be like that since we saw the segmented map. Still nice to have confirmation. Hopefully a sequel on a new switch will have an open world

Thank god. I will probably enjoy it more.

Open World games are just not for me. Tho I suspect Pokémon will go into that direction soon, tho I don’t know how they’ll go about it.

Anyways, I don’t think there nothing wrong with this regardless. So I hope this news isn’t controversial

Makes sense considering I don't think Game Freak is capable of making a whole open-world game rn at least.

That's ok in my eyes.
Yeah, it's in a way better like that. Game Freak has noticibly been taking steps to reach the experience to do an actual open world: Wild Area -> Crown Thundra and Isle of Armor -> Legends: Arceus. Which is a nice timeline, as they can incorporate critiscism from the previous unto the next, till they "master it".

Plus, in a way, it is understandable. They surely want to save the title of "first open world Pokemon game" to a new generation, instead of letting a side series have it.

The Pokémon Company statement is kinda worthless without knowing the exact phrasing of question. On its own it doesn't confirm the assumptions made in the article.

Thank god. Real open world doesn’t exactly mesh well with pokemon, but containment zones with biomes that are carefully crafted do work well for the kind of series that this is. Something like Xenoblade not named X where the fauna and flora are given a level of thought. Then again, BOTW had it done right and was open, so its a moot point.

We already knew this though I feel, at least from the story and trailers about how you have to go to each in an order?

So less Breath of the Wild, more Monster Hunter.

(PokeMon)ster Hunter, if you will.

I'm cool with this.

Yeah based on the second trailer this is what many of us thought.

Their problem was not being clear from the beginning that it's not open world, that'll sour the overall attitude on this I think.

I'm cool with that, Open World isn't always synonymous with good and a monster hunter style game would work well if the areas and missions can be fun enough, and what we've seen of bosses so far makes me hopeful

The era comments are actually salty about this lmao. They are saying their hype is deflated
Era can’t help but be fucking miserable about Pokémon. Like, there’s someone comparing Game Freak to friggin Somic Team, the devs who thought giving Shadow a gun and giving him the objective of “kill the president” was a good idea.

I’m glad they are clearing this up (even though it was clear enough for me), because the Pokémon community in my hometown are all “Finally Pokémon of the Wild!” and I know they were gonna be very salty when the game released and they realized they were wrong.

I’m tired of seeing people hype themselves up for the wrong reasons.

Also, not every game needs to be open world. Either way, I’m hyped for this game regardless of how they approach the game world.

Tbh I hate open world because of how barren it usually is. Also it's really annoying to get around places. So I'm really happy their going for a monster hunter style.

I know most of us were leaning monster hunter but there were/are a lot of people out there that believed it was open world...this is where the salt is coming from. I just don't understand the point of noble? (i think that's what they're called) pokemon like the hisui braviary. I though those were there to gate off areas and progression until the player was leveled up and ready.

I think this is a clear natural progression from SWSH and the two dlcs. True open world won't come till next gen, if at all. Personally, I would rather they didn't just so they could tighten progression which can already be shoddy in pokemon games.

I'm glad! SWSh should have taught us that Game Freak isn't near ready to tackle a fully open world project. And plus, the game just keeps looking and sounding better. That first trailer looked like a cheap botw knock off, lately it's been really coming into it's own and I'm finally getting hyped!

Definitely makes the graphics more questionable, to my eyes. I assumed the game looking the way it does was a concession for its openness.

Monster hunter had never clicked with me, so, I'll wait then, I wanted to visit towns and cities in a different era, like in the mainline, but in full 3d.

Segmented open areas makes the most sense to me, I think if it was open world it would feel more barren and not necessarily better either. A bunch of big open zones is probably better suited to GF's current skillset and will let them focus on making each area better rather than needing everything to be interconnected and fleshed out. Plus it can serve as a building block to an eventual good open world game instead of them trying and failing right now. I'm still extremely excited for the game but going in that era thread about it makes me kinda sad lol, people really hate GF huh.

Fine by me. Still gladly playing what's looking to be like an amazing game. The worlds seem more open than monster hunter's.

That's fine

I find it kind of weird that open world is just considered automatically better. As long as it's fun, I'm in. I'm not a big Pokemon fan so I'm curious to see how much they change things up. If the world is open or has zones doesn't really matter much to me.

I hate the comments that are like "it's not enough Game Freak!!!". This is the biggest shift in direction the series has ever seen, but because it's not a literal BOTW knockoff they're not innovating enough. It's never enough for these people.

I was honestly hoping for an open world so that it could take more from the BoTW style, so this confirmation is a bit eh for me. Nothing I wasn't expecting after the second trailer but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Not to say a segmented world can't be good, obviously, but it feels like from what we've seen the game will be hampered by a lack of openness. I'm not sure a Pokemon game can realistically pull off a Monster Hunter type mission structure, honestly. But maybe if the mission objectives are loose and varied enough, and the areas interesting enough to explore and vibe in.

The main problem is that the missions we've seen so far seem like they'll just get tedious with this sort of structure, whereas with an open world they'd just be things you'd fill out while exploring rather than the main objective of going out exploring.

I actually wanted them to take inspiration from Xenoblade’s world design, so this is ok for me. If they really need some form of linearity, this is a good way of making sure it works with a more open design. I think it can be a very good middle ground for all the things they’re trying to do.

On the technical side, I will never expect a polished game from them. For me these games are more about the actual fun, and at least this one has a beautiful style. I didnt really love Galar after the beautiful aesthetic of Alola (I was blown away somehow by this game).

So yeah, hype level remains intact: very high!

reading this thread and its equivalent on the old forum, i'm really happy this place exists.
No kidding. That thread is the unholy combination of console warriors, miscellaneous idiots and trolls, and the " Pokémon hasn't been good since 2012, and Masuda killed my dog" brigade.

the areas seem to be self contained, like monster hunter. though that's just level design, not progression
Nice.
Honestly, not a big surprise considering past trailers hinted at this system.

Still excited to try my first pokemon since red and yellow.

That's honestly alright but it does make the game's visuals and performance a bit harder to excuse here. I'm just hoping that what they're trying to do here is fun and works. I liked a lot of what I saw, so I'm somewhat optimistic. If it is, I might just pick it up as my first Pokemon game since Sun and Moon

I'm puzzled by this statement and internet reactions...wasn't this obvious since the august Presents? I'm pretty fine with this, an open map a là Xenoblade 2 will be great, if maps are full of quests, character and Pokémon to interact, interesting environments etc.
