this is a bit of an interesting case, as the game is clearly parodying Nintendo's Miis (more specifically, their usage in Wii Music) by tying legally distinct clones of them to a goofy instrument you're expected to play poorly.
evidently Nintendo thought it was amusing, considering it was a featured title in the direct.

notably there's multiple options here that simulate the fidgety mouse controls of the PC original. one is standard motion controls, another is analogue sticks, while one is a unique usage of the Joycon's IR camera, where moving your hand closer and further away from it slides the cursor around.

This game reawakens the teenage humor that still exists within me, because I can hardly hold back from laughing whenever I watch the trailer. I love it for that.

I'm still amazed that 1) this is actually on Switch and 2) it took them nearly a year to do so

When this was announced my first reaction was "I want this with motion controls"

My headcanon is that Miyamoto himself wanted to play this on the Switch and that's why it's here with unique gameplay mechanics :p

The multiplayer of this is going to be so ridiculous lol.

I kept waiting for it to get some sort of controller support on Steam Deck because the touch controls did not work well whenever I played. Guess my fix is paying 15 Euro on Switch to not worry about control issues on Steam Deck.

This game is pretty funny and pretty fun too. Absolutely worth the $15. I want more games like this but the trombone lends itself well here for hilarity since it pretty uniquely allows for everything in between the usual 12 notes. My appreciation for the instrument has certainly increased since playing this game.

I had no idea the first trombone was made in the year 20,000,000 BC. I mean, I studied history in college and this profound bit of data was ignored.

As someone who's not a huge fan of motion controls, when I saw the stick control option listed as "very difficult! Not recommend." I thought "how hard could it be?"

I lasted 5 seconds. Motion is the way to go.

This made me remeber all the mods they did on pc. The one for One Winged Angel is perfect lol

Also this should be a free update or dlc, make it real Nintendo

That there are so many classical music themes is of course natural given how recognizable they are and that they can be used freely without expensive licenses and royalties, but it would've been fun to have more contemporary music with some heavy brass. On PC I could mod the game to make that happen, but on Switch it's of course not possible. Still, the game is really fun regardless and the motion controls are well-executed.

Trombone Champ is a game about perfection. Before you play, it asks you to select a stance for your tromboner: 'estudious' or 'jubilant'. Neither of these is appropriate when you know your performance will be as ear-abusive as an excited puppy mauling a bulb horn. Or are they? The true lesson is perhaps to hold your head high anyway. In life, as in Trombone Champ, faced as we all are with certain doom, be estudious if you like, be jubilant, parp like crazy, and be your very best you – no matter how imperfect that invariably is.

8/10
