Sonic has a very strong foundation as a character, which I really admired about the series, and I can see why many people would return to Sonic even on his worse days. In this manner, it would be similar to Garfield because he too has a strong foundation as a character. The games may not always be a hit, but the environmental designs are very creative, complemented by the melodious music.
This is an unpopular opinion, but I felt that Sonic Lost World is a good base for 3D controls, which would benefit from some improvements. What I liked is that it has a more flexible sense of movement, namely the parkour which can facilitate wall-climbing and -running in a way that's intuitive since you don't necessarily lose speed when colliding them, and there is a button to control speed (though I felt that the movement button would be better suited for braking instead of running). Having two forms of attack is a nice change of pace, as with the ability to have different strengths in targeting. The thing that I find amusing is that the parkour mechanic in this game is not needed to complete the game, since there are Wisps around to help those who had trouble with it. I have a certain fondness for the Deadly Six, because they are unconventional designs, and perhaps it's a good thing that they are overall more adaptable for future roles compared to many of the other villains (besides Eggman), despite being underutilised thus far.
Thank you for reading.
