when you haven't played video games since the 80's but you finally beat that shrine you've been struggling with for days

My stepdad finally beat "Stop to Start", one of the DLC shrines on the great plateau. He was ecstatic

Honestly I love watching him play games. It's great to see these games I love through a set of fresh eyes.

My dad used to play Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition on the Genesis. I was too young to be good at the game so he would play through it so I could see the later levels. Then he never played games again until Angry Birds which I heard he played during my college graduation while waiting for my name to be called. He recently bought a mini arcade machine of Space Invaders which he bought from Nordstrom of all places.

There really is something to that sort of thing! It is often just a sense of earnest joy from someone lapsed and/or just generally from a different time and place in their life.

I remember my grandmother spending a lot of time playing Wonder Boy on the Master System, and anytime there's been a new entry or remake it's hard to avoid the mental image of her gleefully chipping away at it and cussing up a storm the entire time.
