🏆Famiboards 2024 Gaming Celebration Ballot!🏆
We've opened the vote for Famiboards game of the year 2024! Please take a look the
post here and get voting! Now nominating Best Action/Adventure and Best Art Direction!
Another vid, this time the SMBLL ones. I have to say, despite this one being quite texturally interesting among Mario games, I would be fine to never play it again. I don't like it!
This should give me all 3 of the SMBLL badges, meaning I've finished SMB1/LL's set. My final score for SMB2LL is 1120250!
Putting in some work on Mario 3, I have mostly the e-reader level badges:
I did all of the e-coins first, but I guess I didn't need a separate picture for that. In contrast, I didn't take extra pictures for all the levels, since I must have done them all to get all the Advance coins. Let me know if that's a problem. This should be evidence for Three of a Card, World-e Explorer, Advance Coin Collector, and e-Coin Collector.
I really like the e-reader levels. I also beat them after buying the game during the Wii U shut down. I kind of wish nintendo would make more things like them where they mix up the games. Like Mario Maker but less... modular? I also think it should be a tradition to remake the iconic SMB levels in each new engine. Just as a little bonus, or maybe as one long level.
Busted out the ol' faithful 3DS and played some Super Mario Land. The game was my first encounter with Mario but I never managed to beat the game as a kid, I fixed that now. I really like how weird and unlike anything on the big screen this game is. Egypt levels? Exploding Koopas? Side scrolling shoot'm'up sections?! This ain't your dad's Mario anymore! (Bring back Tatanga, you cowards!)
That was fun. Definitely more than Mario USA
Top of the Sarasaland Goal:
Exploring Sarasaland's Secrets:
Super Ball Power and Topple Tatanga:
And here's Savior of Sarasaland. Hard mode was a bit of a mixed bag. Maybe don't clutter the screen with so many enemies that the game can't keep up anymore
I see that Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) is getting a bit of a bad rap in the thread. I get it - it's a very different game than the rest. I'm playing the All-Stars version (I'm also gonna play the Advance version separately, because I have way too much time on my hands I guess!), and I kinda dig it. It feels more punishing than the rest (other than Lost Levels of course) because lives are hard to come by outside of the roulette (which is basically pure luck unless I miss something) and health is few and far between. Mario Advance did a lot to make the game more approachable, even with the screen size issues. I do miss the focus on movement and momentum based platforming over grabbing and throwing objects or enemies. But I also like the exploration, I like how different characters let you approach levels in different ways, and I can appreciate this as a different kind of platformer, even if it's not my preference for Mario.

It's definitely unique, which is nice. And you're you're right about the different characters. But I felt like by the end of world 2 I'd seen everything it had to offer and it just keeps going and going. The levels where you have to do the most exploration are later on when you're just looking at similar looking areas over and over.
I never really played the game before save for a few quick sessions when I was younger, now that I completed it to completion (advance all-stars) I remembered 4 things that I really appreciate.

I adore Doki Doki Mario, and have since I was a kid. Yeah it's a very different type of game but it's a really good game. The music is great, the vibes are there, the last world especially starts to feel like something really special (or at least it did to me as a kid), and for its era the boss fights are rad. One of my favorite 8-bit games out there.

Played the GBA version and I just.. didn't really vibe much with it. It's interesting, I give it that, but I think it's kind of a middling execution. The characters are all unique, yes, but Mario is the only one that I actually like to play as because the others have terrible physics which aren't suited for what the game expects you to pull off. I do like the overall look though and the boss fights are pretty rad (except the fire breathing BIrdos, that one can get in the bin)!
Try to clear it in GBC, you fight against the screen size too!. I always thought they didn't make accesible world 9 to D (they are in the code) because they didn't want people to throw their gameboy
SMB2J absolutely feels like a game from a different era. It's the game for the 80's kid that had Super Mario Bros as one of their only games and who played it to death. It tells them, "Oh, I know you have free time. I know you mastered the last game. Here, this will take up your time now. Have fun!" Its high level of difficulty through challenging, almost merciless platforming, while also changing only a few mechanics here and there is completely foreign to the more modern idea of Mario being the game for anyone with any skill level. It's deeply fascinating and feels like a game that could only really exist in the early days of the Mario franchise.

Didn't Tezuka say at one point that the idea for SMB2JP was that world 1 in that game was essentially world 9 of SMB1? Like the idea was that it was a continuation of the game, so the difficulty got to where it was by the end of 1 and just continued through 2. I thought I read that somewhere.

Not to mention they actually added the infinite life trick in the first level because they thought players were going to need it lol
We made it so you could get infinite 1-UPs from the beginning to prepare you for the levels to come, and some of those levels would whacky [sic] or defy the laws of physics. We made it adding those things and it was fun. But we thought it would be hard for first time players so we put a sticker on the package that said "For Super Players"
Onto Super Mario Land 2! Another one I haven't played since childhood
It's interesting how this is a step towards being basically Super Mario World but on the Gameboy, while still kinda retaining that weirdness of the first one, although I miss the Magic Ball powerup and the catchy egypt music :')
Ring the Bonus Bell

Oh, I also managed to get the 99-Up Jackpot! That counts for Turtle Tipping, right?

Working through SMB 3 proper now. Here are the picture proofs for World Map Secrets, Koopalings Go Boom-Boom, Nice Suit, and Memory Matcher, kept behind spoilers for the match game answers.
It was after I did Wendy with the fire flower, but I also tried to kill Lemmy with hammers, but I think he may genuinely be immune to them. I couldn't get a single one to land on him. All that's left is to finish the game at this point! I'm traveling this weekend starting tomorrow, so probably not until next week unless I get some down time.
Tonight was all about Doki Doki... I mean Super Mario Bros 2. This was actually the first time that I have beaten the game. I had both the NES and All-Stars versions growing up. I must have played the first couple of worlds a hundred times as a kid, but I never made it to the end, and sadly I haven't revisited the game in a long time. I forgot that so many classic Super Mario enemies originated in this game. Getting to play as four different characters, each with their own attributes, for the first time was amazing. Sadly, some of the controls have not aged well. Trying to climb requires almost exact persision and you can fall really fast otherwise. Still, it is a good game in 2023.
Last night, I completed my own adventure in Subcon with the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA)! Mario USA is not quite my speed compared to the other titles, sitting solidly in the lower half of classic 2D Mario, but it's a solid game with a lot of charm. Having the four different playable characters to help you approach levels differently helps with both variety and in molding the challenge in the way you want. The characters who are best at the platforming are worse at plucking/throwing and vice versa, but there are reasons to choose one or the other depending on the level. The fact that you can chance characters if you die, an additional mechanic added to All-Stars, helps with this, even if I didn't personally use it. I'd like to see a game further flesh this style of grab and throw plus exploration. I really gotta play Klonoa and Mischief Makers at some point...
Got a hot new batch of badges finished - this time all of the SMB2USA ones + the GBA exclusive ones for whenever those are implemented! I should also hit the High Score Chaser one with this.
I used to be one of those people that liked SMB2USA more than SMB3, but as time has gone on and I've replayed it more times, I've started to notice more cracks. I still like it a lot, but I think the way the screen scrolls upward can really kill some of the platforming at times and there's a lot more levels where you either need to dig and climb (both of which aren't particularly fun in this game) than I remember. Still, I agree that the game has a timeless charm to it, and it's kind of amazing how many of the series' staple enemies originate from this game.
Final scores:
SMB1: 595,250
SMB2JP (All-Stars): 1,120,250
SMW: 42,190 (I think this one must have reset my score when I beat the game because this is ridiculously low for all 96 exits lmao)
SMB2USA (GBA) : 994390
Also, is there a way to choose which badges we want displayed under our username?
I'm on a roll now. Completed mario bros 2 js / us and the last badge of mario1/2j I needed. Also I thought that Mario Land 1 was on the gameboy virtual console but no, weird omission so gonna return to emulator for that one
I did not skip a single level, that was a huge 2D Mario game!
It took me 3 days to finish.
After I finished the game I returned to world-5 and got stuck in a memory minigame loop...
Alright, that's a wrap on the GOAT, TotK, so now I can split my time between some leisurely Pikmin and Mario badges this weekend on top of Barbenheimer

Hey folks! Hope you're all having fun playing Super Mario for the event. I'm happy to report that the badges for the Advance Challenges are now on Fami! I've given them out to anyone who had already achieved the milestones, but do let me know if I missed you.

Retainer Retriever
Your Quest is Over
SMB2
Foraging in Subspace

Birdo Basher

Finally the last 3 games to complete the 50 badges and become a super player!
Super Mario World: Still a master piece after so many years, but having a blue yoshi make like 70% of the stages piece of cake
Top of the giant gate
Freshly Hatched
Over the moon
Swtich Stomper
Saviour of dinosaur land
Dinosaur land explorer
Yoshi's Island: Really the only option they should've added was to lower the volume of the goddam baby crying lol. Also poor deep purple Yoshi, I assume it was left stranded on the moon
Time goal ring
Mini battle champ
Half-way to baby Luigi / Brothers Reunited
Perfectionist / Extra credit
Super Mario Land: After some many years without playing it, it's really the weirdest of the bunch, like it was a game from other franchise

Congrats on being our very first Super Player! Now will you also become our first Advance Player by getting a full 60/60 Badges?
As for my own progress, I meant to do Super Mario Bros. 3 first, and I did make a lot of progress (up to World 6 right now!), but I had some free time while I was out and I did Super Mario Land instead. Oops!
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins coming in hot! I don’t have the first one so Nintendo better put it on NSO before September (or I’m just going to play a flash version I found and hope I can get through it lol)
stopped around level 60 but have to say Mario Bros is one of the best arcade games ever made. Just so much fun when you get going. Found a sweet spot tonight (helps when you rock the bonus stages to get those extra lives). This version seems decidedly easier than the arcade game too.
Got pictures for: Time the Goal Ring, Mini Battle Champ, Perfectionist, Halway to Baby Luigi and Brothers Reunited
EDIT:Here's a screenshot for Extra Credit, showing the Extra-3 level with a score
EDIT 2: And while I'm at it, here's to "Secret Credit", curtesy of my poor thumbs. I think I lost more lifetime in some of those than Yoshi
Very pretty game but I feel like the levels are a bit too large for their own good. Also the GBA sounds was a bit grating at times And here's to... SMB2: The lost levels (NES)
Peace is Paved and Fantasy World
Jesus Christ, this game. I have no words. It absolutely destroyed me. And I was already like halfway through when I realised that I had to clear the game 8 times to make it to the actual ending... I don't know if I have that in me o_o
So... I decided to play the All-Stars version. World-9 was fun but comparatively too easy. And the alphabet levels were super uneven, A-C had one or two tricky jumps but weren't really worse than anything between 4 and 8. And then there's D which has a spike in the beginning and then kinda... fizzles out? Overall the whole worlds felt a bit underwhelming, definitely not worth playing the game 8 times
Assuming it's the one with the massive amount of brick blocks in it, in the long hall with the Roto-Discs, there is a pipe you need to fly up to. If you don't have a Raccoon/Tanooki power, there's one hidden in the level.
