Anyways I did play Turf War matches on Lemuria Hub to start off the new season. It’s strange however I definitely thought it was less awkward of a layout than Bluefin Depot or, like, Brinewater Springs.

So we’ve had Gambit (Splatoon), Blitz (S2), and Thunder (S3). According to Midori, “Spiral” is coming? I don’t believe reading into codenames too deeply ever bears fruit, but thought it was nice to hear something potentially related to Splatoon (other than proof of new special Splatfest names that got datamined)
So Gambit and Blitz are combat terms, being a risky tactical manuever and a sudden attack respectively. That makes a lot of sense for a fast paced shooter.

My best guess is thunder has something to do with dry thunderstorms which are common in the desert, S3's location.

Spiral is anyone's guess, but maybe it could be referring to it as a shape, planning a more open world style campaign?

It's probably not that significant but hey, fun idea to speculate, and while the belief that S3 was the end of the series was mostly baseless, it's nice to get confirmation that we are going to live forever get to have another entry.

Makes sense. Depending on when they gave 3 a codename, it could’ve also been chaos–related.

The following is a reach, but... if they end up reinventing something for Spiral then my guess is a whirlwind (or any other spiral) of “change” coursing through

I compared Twitter vs mobile sharing so now I'm sad we're losing the higher quality clips and screnshots sharing next week :(

And the same goes for photos, even through the NSO app they're lower quality than through Twitter somehow
I'll have to verify at some other time, but I wonder if something is going wrong with your phone's browser in the process. I was under the impression that "send to smart device" just directly sends the image or video with no further compression, while Twitter absolutely does apply their own stuff in the upload process.

Yeah I thought that would be the case too, but a friend also had this result when uploading a photo of my inkling from their square for me, so idk. Well it's possible we both have an issue with our browser, so I'm looking forward to your results!

Thanks for the mythbusting. In my mind it made unquestionable sense that sending to device would create direct copies while Twitter would lower resolution/quality.
Although for what it's worth, Twitter definitely has an issue of lowering video quality a ton when watching it directly through Twitter itself because it loads based on Internet speed, so you'd have to download the video from Twitter using an extension or 3rd party site for highest quality.

But yeah... if it's not just a problem with my friend and I's browsers, then it's just so weird it happens that way

Yeah, but there's one other option that yields the highest quality: if you connect your Switch in Handheld mode to a PC via a USB-C cable, you can save screenshots and videos to it directly (and without any transfer limits, too!). Other than using a capture card that should be the highest quality possible, at least going by what I've heard over on Inkipedia (and in fact I've uploaded a few images and videos to it that way).

It would be weird, and the more I think on it the less likely it seems. Just glancing at the videos I happen to have on my phone, the file names seem different than what they are on the SD card, so it's possible Nintendo's doing something here for some strange reason.

If you're already using a PC, there's also the option that's been there since launch of simply removing the microSD card and copying the files directly. No room for shenanigans there. I suppose I can compare the USB transfer option too when I'm home from work.

Capture cards would indeed be the highest quality, as you could encode in a higher quality format than what the built-in video encoding is providing (you could even save raw video if you really wanted; not useful for sharing clips on the Internet, but useful for pulling screenshots).

Ohhh wow thank you! So glad there's still a way to get high quality photos/screenshots/clips, guess I have to buy that cable soon (edit: oh wait I didn't realize that's the same as the pro controller cable so I already have one niiiice)

IIRC, screenshots transferred over MTP are bit for bit identical as what's on the SD card, but for some reason video clips have a minor discrepancy I've never been able to figure out.

I don't think I've ever checked the send to smartphone thing, but it's possible the web browser may be doing something weird.

"Gambit" always sounded appropriate to me as Splatoon was definitely a "gambit" to save the WiiU. The narrative at the time was always that the console needed games people wanted to play, after all.

"Blitz" was quickly developed to release on the first couple months of the Switch, so the codename is also apt there.

Not sure what they were going for with "Thunder". That's still confusing to me. And I definitely have no idea what "Spiral" could mean. My brain instantly goes for a Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann reference there.

I think in the end it's just better to dump the media via usb (inside settings app) or plug the sd card where you store screenshots and videos into a computer.

Also, I didn't know that the switch compresses media before sending it over the air, good to know  .

I did the USB vs Twitter comparison and turns out screenshots are the exact same quality, and somehow Twitter has lower file size but it's completely lossless (haven't compared clips yet)

The more i think about it the more I think (and desperately hope) the final fest isn't Idols.

Deciding the role of two characters and the aesthetic of the main game is one thing, but specifically deciding which characters are going to come back is a bridge i don't think should be crossed. From my perspective Alice Peralta and Rina Itou (Marina and Pearl's VA) is unmatched and I would be crushed (as crushed as you can be about a video game :p) if they missed out on a chance to return, but at the same time I understand people feel differently, which makes things messy.

The reassuring thing is from the datamine The Jellyfish in the trailer might simply be an NPC in the final fest's plaza which likely has all 3 idols , in which case the trailer tease doesn't necessarily imply that the final fest is Idol groups.

I think Past/Present/Future would be a more than viable alternative, Squid Sisters having ties to the squidbeak splatoon and the great turf war, Off the Hook being related to the exodus of Octolings, and Deep Cut trying to develop the splatlands for the future.

That said if despite it all the final fest IS Idol's, I think my preferred outcome is OTH with vast majority vote but Deep Cut winning overall. Deep Cut get the chance to have their dynamic in a campaign, while OTH gets a side project, be it DLC or spinoff.

We'll just have to trust that the losers don't get shafted. Just like the losers in previous games never got shafted. After all, Callie was still in Splatoon 2's campaign and Order got the dedicated DLC treatment.

Or, we hope that they all get shafted - winners and losers alike - as Splatoon 4 is a complete fresh start and the final fest is just a send-off to the cast, for now.

I use the “send to smart device” feature all the time and the quality is always the same as it is on the SD card for me, so it’s gotta be something with your device or browser that’s causing this.

After a bit of weird thinking inspired by Ikea wine, what if "Spiral" is in fact a Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann reference?

After the final fest, the salmonids take over Earth and all Inklings and Octolings and associates are forced to leave into... Space! The lobby becomes a traveling spaceship with Phantasy Star Online aesthetics, and the main gimmick is that the maps have normal and low gravity areas, with your cephalokid donning transformable spacesuits ala antigrav wheels in Mario Kart.

Story mode involves finding some displaced humans that have sealed themselves to prevent another disaster.

Salmon Run meanwhile goes back to Earth, following everyone that stayed there to fight.

It's not going to be any of this but you know I thought it was a cool idea.

Mincemeat Metalworks is perhaps the most frustrating stage in s3. Of all 5 base game stages it should be the best by far - multiple ways out of mid, wide, defendable spawn regions, a relatively unique identity with the grates, but it's just so much less than the sum of it's parts. The stage's design completely collapses because of how Free the central sniper perch is. It got slightly better in the rework, but that entire platform should have sightlines blocked., as It would likely be a good stage otherwise.

If "Spiral" is indeed the code name for the next Splatoon, I am 80% certain this is what it alludes to:

1920px-Pleuroceras_solare%2C_Little_Switzerland%2C_Bavaria%2C_Germany.jpg

But I have 0% clue what it means for the setting and gameplay.
Do we know how trustworthy this person is?

If so, this conversation feels a bit premature, but at the same time, Splatoon 3 was supposed to be released back in 2021.

Either way, I can't wait to see how game design will be affected by more powerful hardware, and being able to play Salmon Run without framedrops is a big plus. I only hope a multiplayer rogue-like game mode is added, being it a mix of Salmon Run and Side Order.

Hopped back in with this season after not touching the game since September because

1. I got burnt out long all the time because despite having over 100 hours in the game I’m still pretty bad and would lose 85% of my matches, which stopped being fun.
2. I’m a Stringer main that waited a full year using my kit with a middling sub and low tier special just to get a kit with a low tier sub and middling special and was really bummed out about it. No new stringers were added since then (reef-lux deco does not exist) so I had no reason to hop back into multiplayer.

But not only is this most likely the final season, they finally added a new Stringer, and with 2 kits no less. And my god it was worth it. Wellspring V is so good and fixes most of the issues with the tri stringer. It paints better with full charge, gets on shots easier and faster with half charge, and the vanilla kit actually has a bomb. Stamp kinda sucks but I get what they’re going for and it helps up close. Custom kit is fun with point sensor and wave breaker being able to always detect the enemy, but neither ink the floor and wave also isn’t the best special right now. But they do sync well with the weapon and are a fun alternative.

Also nice to see Custom Range blaster with the Splatoon 1 kit back as a Range Blaster main in Splatoon 1 and 2. Haven’t tried it out yet as I’m too stringer-brained with now but I’m looking forward to going back to it.

I’m still bad at the game but this seems to be a pretty good season. They even buffed both older stingers (tri has better paint and reef-lux charges midair like squiffer) and fixed up a bunch of the stages. Awesome stuff.

Truly all weapons are fine and can be as broken as they want, its matchmaking that's an issue for me. I don't mind CRB if there's one on each team but to have two on one team and no blasters on the other for tower control!? Janked. Plus it's probably my fault since matchmaking is based on the range of the weapons, right? So it sees me, jet squelchy main, as an equal/equivalent match, which is so far from the truth. And I only really play tower control, solo queue.

I called it quits on this season already, or at least for the next month while the ranks balance out. I hate getting locked out of X rank every 3 months then it being impossible to get back in for another month. I'll probs do Splatfest tho.

yeah god I hate blaster players

ruin low tier matches playing chess while the rest of us play checkers

Playing Custom Range Blaster is fun because you get like 3 shots before you run out of ink (or 1 shot if you use your splat bomb), you can’t refill it very fast because of white ink frames every blaster gets to suffer with, and you can’t panic button your special if someone get’s close you with Kraken because it takes 1000 years to startup, has hella endlag to punish it, and can be pushed off the top of tower by basically every other special due to it’s knockback.

tldr weapon is hard.

(Also I haven’t played a Kraken since Splatoon 1 so when I used it I spammed the X button which kept pulling up the map and I was really confused 😭)

I'm incredibly surprised Splatoon has never really been nominated for awards on the basis of it's music.

I kinda get its not to everyone's tastes, but Splatoon 3 alone has so many phenomenal original tracks, even outside basically all the battle tracks - Sandcastles, Shadows in the Sun, Hyper Driver, Bait and Click (Mutation), Unconscience, #47: Onward, tomorrow's nostalgia today and we're so back

Heck, even one of the lobby tracks, Pour it On , has become one of my favorite atmospheric songs from gaming and it's a lobby theme.

Not even mentioning how each band has a distinct musical identity that carries across multiple tracks, shopkeeper have unique tracks and soundfonts based on what they're selling and where they're selling it, the distinct ambiance of each stage that's only appreciable in recon, such as Barnacle featuring shopkeeper themes.

I can understand not winning in those categories, but not even a nomination feels criminal.

why are you gloating like this

why can't I just read and talk about this game in a casual context on this site

Why are you like this? 🫤
What part of her post doesn't allow you from talking about the specific things you prefer?
I mean, you have posted 758 times here (2nd most active user), so the replies by the really, really good players can't have that much effect on your posting habits, right?
Why do you want to dictate what people can or can't discuss in the thread?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with players sharing their achievements, clips, images, thoughts, no matter their skill level or time commitment to the game. Everyone is valid.

I don't want to be rude, but I'm honestly tired of this particular attitude of yours. I get it, I wish I could be better at the game too, but this isn't the first time that you whine about "gloating," which no one is really doing. At least not in a way that should hinder people.
Lucy barely posts anymore and to be frank, you complaining about my posts last time was one of the reasons that made me stop participating here for the past 3 months, which sucked because this is my favorite thread (and the reason I joined Famiboards) and I really enjoy Splatoon talk and clips.

So be chill and inclusive. Let people post and discuss whatever they want about the game.

Anyway, happy pride month y'all!

I DID it! (Like I got the badge two days ago but I didn't post it here lol)

I love this weapon so much it's SUPER fun (I want to get better at this nevertheless but I'm sure I will if I keep picking it up).
I need to try the Neo kit (seems better overall) but I enjoy the base kit a lot too — what are your thoughts about Mint?

Anyways I think I'll try to get the CRB badge next. My beloved...

I usually main short range weapons, so I've been having some trouble fighting against Decaviators. I don't know, I don't wanna say it's broken, but hitbox is at the very least, generous. I may have to switch back to Dread Wringer to be able to win something.

I usually try to bait them into doing something committal like a dash slash, and prioritizing dodging the attack and only then shooting back

Verticality, verticality, verticality. Splatana's lack gravity on their shots which is in most ways a buff, except over ledges. Stamper and Wiper's vertical hitbox allow it to mostly circumvent this issue, but Decavitators can't touch you, a good example is makomart. It still requires conscious play, but it makes the matchup a lot more difficult imo. It also limits their ability to cheese out kills with a dash slash. It's not amazing on flatter stages like brinewater but its the most consistant counterplay.

It reminds me how much i wish bubble could be deployed midair.

Other than that, lethal bombs are always nice, and is significantly better than wall (the only sub i actually dislike).

As a main weapon, I wish the charge slash had a bit more range, but the ability to heavily angle charge slashes makes in an absurdly fun weapon in casual play. I'm so glad they went with it over a more traditional "heavy type weapon," a trap I feel other mobile weapon classes like gloogas have fallen into.
