Considering I just bought a PS5 less than a year ago and have had maybe 3 games to meaningfully play on it maybe, yeah I sure hope we have a long cycle.

I'd prefer for this gen to go on as long as the PS3/360 one did, if not longer. I look at games like The Last of Us Part I, Silent Hill 2 remake, Forspoken, etc and I've got to wonder how much better graphics can get.

Now Nintendo I'd like to see late 2023/early 2024 at the absolute latest. It's time.

Considering they got a price hike this year and they're still basically PS4 Pro Pros and Xbox One X Xs, yeah, that'd be for the best. Especially with how performance and resolution most likely won't be an issue for them, even when they finally start making next gen only exclusives

Makes sense. Diminishing returns on graphics, game development taking longer, the transition being slower this time.

i mean, hat wont prevent them from releasing pro and slim versions of their current ones.
slim for sure (those are usually reducing production costs), but pro im not sure.
From the GPU trajectory i t feels like getting meaningful more power would mean increasing the power consumption by a significantly amount.
With increasing power prices, no real new TV improvement (i mean, come on, 8k? no chance we are there in 4 years while 4k TVs did already start becoming the norm during the release of last gen),
… yeah, i have no idea whats the latest point they would need to decide if they want to do pro releases,
but i assume with how the world looks currently at the moment it doesn't really make sense.

Depending on how close Nintendo manages to match the power (at least of the CPU and memory bandwidth) it could make 90% of current gen ports possible... (in [email protected] depending on the load and if they are 60 or 30 on other consoles)

What do you guys think about this, looks like to me like another long 8 year life cycle but with all the supply constraints it makes sense, also Nintendo is gonna be again putting out their next console before the others.

I’d be a bit bedazzled if they didn’t. Switch would be 11 years old!

With crossgen still being very prevalent I feel like this "new" gen hasn't properly started yet. There hasn't been any PS45 or X1 exclusive to represent a generational leap, remakes aren't going to make it and I think this situation may still go on for at least 1 year or even more, so looking at it that way 5 years don't look like much. Besides, there'll probably be pro versions somewhere before then.

We already have ps4 games confirmed for 2024. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if 2030 is when we see the next gen of hardware.

I'm not sure if there's gonna be another Xbox console. PC gaming is growing at a very fast pace and gonna be a serious money maker for MS in next few years. I expect the PC versions of MS games to outsell Xbox versions at a big rate.

And I also expect PS to return handheld space, maybe even with a hybrid console.

I'd hope the generation is a long one given the cost of the consoles. I'm not willing to buy a PS6 in 2025 when the PS5's library isn't exactly lighting fires for me now at near the end of 2022.

I feel like that makes sense. It’s been two years since the PS5 and XSX launched, and I have never seen either of them sitting in a store, ever. Despite shipments ebbing and flowing, tons of people who want these things don’t have ‘em yet. Very few games are exclusive to these machines / have really tapped their potential yet. Supply shortages are still a thing! It all seems like a perfect storm to stretch this gen out as much as possible

I still feel I kinda miss out not having a PS5 so not able to play DS remastered, but when I finally get one I do have a worthy PS4 collection.

We already know the next PlayStation console name and their expectation for release timings... but we're still completely in the dark when it concerns Nintendo.

Do you guys prefer the surprise aspect of Nintendo? Or would you prefer if they were more transparent?

Even then, more powerful consoles could be a pretty hard sell. Might finally have some worthwhile RT accelerators from AMD by then , though.

Not the least bit surprised by this. Looking forward to getting my PS5 in 2024. Feels like next year is when we might see trailers for some of those Xbox games announced a while back hopefully (Perfect Dark, new Fable, The Outer Worlds 2 etc). Although that may be me being optimistic.

Well that settles Drake release date...end of.

Jokes aside, seems to fit in with the usual 8 year lifecycle we get these days. I would expect it to last a bit longer due to the pandemic.

You still can't buy a PS5 at the store where I live, always out of stock. The machines have been out for 2 years and they feel like they're still in their release month.

Sounds about right. I confidently think that a device that would fittingly be classified/sold as a 'PS6' cannot be delivered at an acceptable mass market price before 2027 anyway. And 2027 is being aggressive. 2028 or later is the safe bet.
(explanation: given the current trajectory of perf/power/area improvements, I think that TSMC's N2 is the bare minimum to deliver what can be billed as 'the next generation'. N2 is currently projected to start volume manufacturing in H2 2025. Then tack on some time for costs to depreciate. The time's also needed for GDDR7 to mature and hopefully its cost to depreciate as well. Buuut I dunno how GDDR pricing trends.)

I think MS would still ship a hardware unit with a controller but it might be indistinguishable from a standard PC aside from maybe a custom Windows OS UI. Basically Steam machine but made by MS and focused on Microsoft Store / GamePass.

What could a PS6 even do that anyone would care about?
A PS6 releasing in 2028-2029 could support full path tracing at 60+fps which could result in games completely switching over to ray tracing as the main rendering method, saving developers precious time and resources and speeding up development times.

They have barely started to stride in the first place
hey are still inside the house, haven’t even gotten downstairs and made coffee yet.
I get what you mean but I thought it sounded a little mean to say it like that hahaha.

I won't claim to understand the technical specifics, but that would be cool. However, that's from a dev perspective; the real question is if consumers would care about buying PS6.

Would this surprise anyone? Generation barely feels like it's started what with the horrendous supply issues and extended cross gen release period

Honestly Nintendo is in the best position they have ever been. Just release a more powerful switch next year, call it switch2 and rake in millions.
