Sega VR was an unreleased virtual reality headset in the early 1990s. Planned as an add-on peripheral for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, it was later cancelled after Sega ran into development issues.

In the video below, Alan Hunter (of MTV fame) introduces the Sega VR headset at the 1993 Summer Consumer Electronics show.

Sega always tried to make stuff years before it was possible, really. That VR headset must have been terrible. (But I still admire them for even trying).

What a time capsule. Everything from the stage to the shirt. Even the type on the promo screens reminds me of the often-mocked ‘you wouldn’t steal a car’ anti-piracy ad you used to get here.

The concept of VR was huge at the time- The Lawnmower Man released in 1992 which was a hype boost for it too. It all looks so dated now (and it’s not a great film) but I remember it being part of the zeitgeist.
