These photographs were posted by Slamfest '99's producer, Ed Espinoza. Espinoza had previously been interviewed by GameXplain to talk about his work on the event's production.
To promote the game, Nintendo held a promotional event called Slamfest '99 on April 24th, 1999 from 11 AM to 1 PM at the MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 17-minute long "fight" that was livestreamed via RealPlayer G2 started half an hour later into the event and featured various costumed characters from the game. A recording of the corresponding livestream has never surfaced since its initial broadcast.

Lost Media Wiki's page includes more information about the event, including some summaries of what occurred, as well as the history of the search for footage. The costumes used in the event were also used to film the television commercials for the game.

I had no idea this event ever happened, seems it was a ton of fun. N64 era marketing was wild.

there's a ton of these unusual esoteric gaming events out there with little information online today. like the time Nintendo had a guy in a Mario suit watch over the destruction of bootleg cartridges.

truly one of the most haunting photos in gaming history.

This is so damn funny šŸ˜‚

Also the original pics from the Smash 64 days are pretty cool. That ad is probably one of the most iconic ones from the 90s.

I really love those costumes, especially the DK one. They really did strike gold with them, and I think Ninty used them in several other commercials after.
