There's our first Playstation Plus Premium games, it looks like.

The only games in the series not confirmed yet are 3 (which is unusual as it was released as a PS1 classic decades ago.) and Omega Strain (Which was a multiplayer focused spin-off, though i'm pretty sure it had some single-player features.)
Dark Mirror and Logan's Shadow are also notable for being released on both the PSP and PS2, which begs the question of which version they'll use.
The latter shouldn't haven't any problems using the PS2 build, but the former is actually censored worldwide on that platform for some reason.

Titles are now getting added to the PSN backend.

Shit just got real.
Not mentioned is a pair of Worms games.
FRc1aHVWUAIOetT.jpg

A few notes here. Ridge Racers is straight up new. It was never released digitally if i remember correctly. Everything else has been re-released before.
Notably, Worms Armageddon looks like it'll also get re-released on the N64 Switch Online app at some point. Considering there's a gap (Between Winback and Yoshi's Story.) that could only fit a game starting with the letter "W".
I'm also surprised at how high quality these box art assets are, either Sony has kept an archive of the original source files. Or the devs themselves happened to still have them around.

I still believe these are going to be badly emulated games with no trophies or additional work done on them. Pricing likely won’t be cheap either for non-subs, trying to drive people towards plus.

While this is still cool, wake me up when we get some RPGs. For this service to be even remotely worth it to me they're going to need a lot of Square Enix/Tri-Ace/Konami support

Official list from Sony, titles previously purchased off the PS3/PSP/Vita stores will get upgraded for free.
Yes, it's finally here.
Classic Games Catalog – Original PlayStation and PSP

PlayStation Studios

  • Ape Escape | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Hot Shots Golf | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • I.Q. Intelligent Qube | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Jumping Flash! | Japan Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Syphon Filter | Bend Studio, Original PlayStation
  • Super Stardust Portable | Housemarque, PSP
Third Party Partners

  • Mr. Driller | Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., Original PlayStation
  • Tekken 2 | Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., Original PlayStation
  • Worms World Party | Team 17, Original PlayStation
  • Worms Armageddon | Team17, Original PlayStation
New additions of note are Ape Escape and IQ.
For whatever reason, Sony had typically only re-released the PSP remake of Ape Escape rather than the original. While Intelligent Qube was only re-released in Japan.

While there is some PS2 games listed, it's merely just a few of the "classics" titles that were previously brought to PS4.

The biggest news, though. Is this.
Also, players who have previously purchased the digital version of select games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5. When these titles are released for PS4 and PS5, players can head to PlayStation Store and download a version for the consoles at no extra cost if they already own the digital version of the title. Some of the titles will also be available for individual purchase.
The fact Sony is finally acknowledging old purchases of the classic Playstation Store is utterly nuts, and i'd imagine it probably took a ton of arm-twisting to get Jim Ryan to sign off on it.

If you're worried about the current size of the list, word from Sony is that they'll add new games "in the middle of each month". Though it sounds like the main focus would be on native PS4/PS5 titles.

Actually great news that you won’t have to repurchase some games if you’ve bought them on PS Store before. Doesn’t help me at all, but I’m happy for everyone with a digital PS1/PSP treasure trove.

Yeah, for those of us who joined very late to the party (PS4 is my first Sony console since PS2) this is a bit underwhelming. If they're going to allow download of already purchased games they could also allow to purchase them as an alternative.

The only new additions to this service are a lackluster list of PSOne games and year one PS5 games (aka fuck me for being an early adopter I guess).

Sony should have and could have done more.

I was happy to read that older classic titles that we purchased on older systems would be honored when they came to the service, the problem with that is that many of the titles I own probably won't come to the service.

Hopefully they just start selling them on the PS5 store as well, otherwise you could do some weird workarounds by buying them on older platforms (while the stores are still up).

I also really hope they bring Vita games to the service eventually.

This right here; how many of the following games will actually be on the service: persona 3 fes, persona 4, chrono trigger, final fantasy 5 - 9, legend of dragoon (which I am shocked is not on the launch list, come on sony...), grandia, breath of fire... so on and so on and so on. Easy to say your purchases will transfer over when the games most people give a damn about won't even be on the service.

I hate to be hard / pessimistic with Sony on this, but it is obvious they are being dragged into this kicking and screaming. They are revealing this new service as if all of those PS3 games couldn't already be streamed via PSnow and how the PS2 games are the same games that have been ported to PS4 roughy seven years ago until they no longer saw a value in porting PS2 games to PS4 and shoved them into the PSNow abyss as well. Sony is simply rebranding a service no one wanted and acting like its a big deal by doing the absolute bare minimum in regards to porting PSOne and PSP games to the system, something that should've been done when PS4 launched.

I'd say all the PS4/PS5 games are the big thing for the service and what they are going to push, and the retro games as you said is just a re-branding of PS Now.

While the list is pretty meh (to which I keep hearing folks say "it's a preview!" but why would they lead with such odd picks), the standard they are setting for acknowledging prior purchases is very cool.

It's a shame that NSO is sequestered off in its own app, though I do wonder how much more complicated this makes the hurdle for bringing each game over for Sony.

I feel like they are screwing this up from both ends. Focusing on PS5/PS4 games as the attractive force is pointless if they aren't going to release new games day-and-date onto the service. At the other end you have the PSOne classics which, based upon what they revealed so far, is very very lacking. In the end, you are left with a service that simply exists, but why?

Nintendo can also catch flack for this, but in the end it is still just $20 a year for the base level with SNES/NES and $50 a year for everything. That is much cheaper than what Sony is offering and I feel Nintendo is handling their classic offerings in a better light, which is insane to say considering how much crap everyone, myself included, gave Nintendo for how they handled their Virtual Console this gen. Nintendo set the bar very low and Sony couldn't even outdo that.

The PS1/PS2 catalog would be the entire reason why I would subscribe and that list is just a disappointment. I understand it isn’t the final list and that they will drip feed content over time but there is just so much first party stuff missing yet alone so little third party support.

When it grows over time I will give it a second look.

Shitpost but oh well.

Sony and Nintendo: Hey Square-Enix, can we get your older Final Fantasy games on our retro game services? Those games were such a big part of our collective history.

Square-Enix: What? No. We can make way more money remake and reselling those games.

Sony and Nintendo: Don’t worry, that’s fine. We will still make tons of easy money when you sell them on our platforms.

Square-Enix: ……

Sony and Nintendo:
You’re selling them on our systems…. Right?

Square Enix: >> ….<< …. -_- ….. this is awkward…

Some classic titles will receive trophy support.

This is, uh. Worrying

I think one of the biggest issues that caused the original PS2 classics selection to quickly die out was the need to implement trophies for every game. So potentially making it a requirement again could severely damage the flow of releases.

I think the list they used to hype up PSOne releases on this service was very telling about the flow of releases.

And honest question; why would developers like Square Enix put games on this service when they can crap out an upscaled emulated version and charge $20 for it on all platforms?

I'm just looking forward to downloading Jumping Flash! on my PS5, folks.

I didn't have a PS2, so I hope there are some first-party gems on that console that I will play here and enjoy.

If every game needs trophies this service is DoA like PS2 was. What company is gonna put the work in for this? People might even get it for free if they had it on Ps3.

Yeah, if it's an extra bonus it's great, if it's mandatory (and not handled by Sony themselves) it's gonna hurt the service. Should aim for having as little friction for publishers to add games as possible.

the price + ps3 games not being native are a tough sell, this service seems pretty bad imo

The lineup's rough but the fact they're recognizing old PSN purchases is kinda huge. Imagine if Nintendo did that with VC.
I am still pessimistic and skeptical on the whole thing. To me, it is easy to honor the purchases when the heaviest hitters from third parties (that sold a lot on PS3) possibly won't show up in the service at all. I am thinking Square Enix games, Capcom, MGS, Symphony of the Night., etc etc.,

It might not be ideal, but it's still a huge improvement on what happened to our VC purchases

I have zero faith in Sony's future handling over these classics. They've botched just about every attempt they've ever done in regards to that. Also, the launch lineup is pretty bad and I have a feeling it'll be no different than Nintendo's offering where there will be almost zero third party support outside of obscure/super small third parties. But since Nintendo's first party library is so much stronger than Sony's, I feel like Sony has a much steeper hill to climb to make the classic library decent.

The games are now officially being added to the Playstation Store in certain regions
Some games are going up in Asian PSN (excluding Japan)

https://store.playstation.com/en-my/product/UP4134-CUSA33999_00-3720818447088678

They're already downloadable so people should have impressions of the emulation soon enough
Right, another notable thing here is that another game was quietly added to the lineup as part of this. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.
In terms of the feature list....
  • Rewinding and save states
  • Various scaling options, including original res, multiple flavors of 4;3, a "square pixels" option, and the awful ability to stretch the game to fill the entire screen.
  • CRT simulation
  • Trophies appear to be optional, thankfully. I'm not seeing the currently available titles on any sites that track these.
The question is if they'll also throw the titles out there worldwide rather than waiting for the PS Plus Premium rollout. It's already the 23rd in the Asian regions, which was the intended date for the new PS Plus tiers to get added there.

The "you can download previously purchased PS1/PSP games" thing is only for if and when those titles get added to the PS+ service, right? I'm glad that's happening but I'm kind of doubtful my old purchases will even show up on this service, and I hope the classics I didn't buy digital copies of also show up with a purchase option - but again, I'm doubtful (or expecting pricier mixed-results remasters from third parties as Scrawnton said).

The line-up so far is not convincing me to upgrade, but then neither did the NSO Expansion.

I'm not sure how many PS1 classics that I bought a dozen years ago will make it to the service, but I happily welcome any games that automatically reappear in my library.

Apparently games are using 50Hz European versions for Asia?

If they are consistently doing this AGAIN after the PS1 Classic and there is no option to change it then Sony are hilarious, lol. Even Nintendo had this sorted right at launch with the N64 service. Really would like to see John from Digital Foundry go in depth on these emulators to see how things are shaping up and get into the nitty gritty, but if everything is PAL then there's almost no need to because they'd all be practically worthless anyway.

official full launch lineup.
New games added as part of the official launch
PS1

  • Disney PIXAR Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue
  • Wild Arms (has trophies)
PSP
  • Echochrome
As for the previously revealed games. Ape Escape, Intelligent Qube, and Hot Shots Golf all have trophy support.

To support multiple languages, almost certainly.
They're also likely using the same SKUs worldwide unlike the original PS1 classics program, which split the builds for each region.

Nothing stopping them from modding 60hz back in, though. Or just giving an option to choose between the PAL and NTSC version.

No ugly ass borders too. I was thinking Sony's other implementation would be better than NSO's and this is proving to be right.

Granted NSO is below bare minimum so not really hard to beat.
Well at least NSO doesn’t force PAL 50 Hz for NTSC regions ^^

Any fans of Dino Crisis here? Seems like it's part of the classics.

There's multiple images out there, so this looks to be legit.

The question is if it's just the original or if the sequel is also coming, i suspect the latter.
This probably also confirms that the original Resident Evil trilogy will eventually get added at some point. Which is a huge deal.

How is NSO under the bare Minimum?

Are we reading the same news? Because for now this is being a disaster.
