One aspect I've been curious to see the series explore is the nocturnal nature of the majority of creatures you fight.

Yes, adult Bulborbs are terrifying in their own right when you first encounter them, but you always flee the planet just as the sun sets for the day. What happens when the ship sputters and fails to lift off above the atmosphere? Their glowing yellow eyes peek from behind every bush tracking your movements as you navigate an even more hostile world now, seeking emergency shelter. Now when a massive army of Pikmin in the daytime was your protection, it's now a weakness as they can only huddle so close together without being picked off by their predators like a walking buffet

Pikmin Bloom released last year, I dont think they would make a mobile game of a franchise they have no plans for
It is true Nintendo is always keeping the IP visible although we haven't had a new mainline game in almost 10 years. There was the 3DS game, a new amiibo, plushies, the switch port, Bloom and Pikmins are featured in many promo stuff from Nintendo.
So they obviously want us to remember the IP exists. But I think for a new mainline entry to materialise, the conditions to gathered are quite difficult.
Sure, they might try prototyping new ideas regularly but I don't know when it will result in a new game

Sitting here with our Pikmin amiibo on the Spring amiibo Display alongside Kirby, Yarn Yoshi and Yarn Poochy. The Pikmin on our Switch dock cover are waving from the TV stand. Hopefully they plan to jump into the TV itself with a new game by the end of next year. Every Direct that and DK are my most hoped-for games.

BTW Pikmin fans, Hey! Pikmin is super under-appreciated and is surprisingly challenging, especially going for a gold medal on the level (no Pikmin lost). I'm really impressed with how they translated the series into 2D.

Also, if you're looking for another 3D Pikmin fix, the Nintendo Land Pikmin attraction is sublime. Playing that is what got me into the series proper, starting with 3 and then the NPC versions of 1 and 2. It is so good. It's like an arcade-y take on the series but the levels are tough as nails and there is a surprisingly deep campaign.

Edit: I hope this didn't sound braggy about merch. Not my intent. I just love Pikmin.

i have 50 characters and i'll use them, all of 'em
I can't believe how greedy gamers can be, we already got Pikmin 4 twice.

I would fucking hate this, but I think they should do it anyway

It will not be announced. Feb 2023 direct late 2023 release date is my prediction
Honestly I’ve given up. I try not to think about it. It’s the only Nintendo game I want at this point. BOTW 2 is a given obviously. I think with Pikmin 4 the delay is how do you surprise the player and introduce new and meaningful way to play the franchise. They should take as long as they need. I do feel they should go overboard on the visuals. I hope Pikmin 4 is one of the best looking games they ever produced.

I think Pikmin 3 is pretty, but it has that ''early HD title'' crust. I think a Pikmin 4 could look considerably better, even if not on a much more powerful hardware.

Pikmin 4 is just a myth

It'll randomly come crawling out of the woodworks only once we've all long since forgotten about it, and not a moment sooner

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they delayed it for another platform. I'm guessing Pikmin 3 Deluxe filled the "Pikmin for Switch" for them and they can afford to hold off Pikmin 4 for the launch of the next system or very close to it, where it might get more exposure. Of course, this is all just speculation on my part but the longer we are in the Switch lifecycle, the longer it feels like they might just decide to hold it off until new hardware.

Pikmin 4 are the friends we made on the way from 1 - 3. This is Miyamotos hidden plan. But it back fired, because fans want always more. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You can have Pikmin 4, but Mother 4 comes first!

I was excited about Hey! Pikmin because it was strongly influenced by Kirby Mass Attack , which is an underappreciated gem in its own right, but the demo put me off it hard. Big shame about the lack of 3D too - Pikmin was the game that would have justified it, because the macro lens/diorama look to the series is perfect for the tech. They really should have pushed hard to for it.

I also liked Hey! Pikmin a lot. Sure it is not the greatness 3 is, but still a very enjoyable game.
Also one of the best use of Amiibos.

If there's ever an optimal moment for a new Pikmin, it would be with the new 4K hardware. Pikmin is the one Nintendo series where the added detail wouldn't be just a nice bonus, but make the environments genuinely more interesting and greatly add to the atmosphere.

I hope that they try new things gameplay and progression wise with Pikmin 4 but if they really do make Pikmin 3 with a 4 at the end I still would be in heaven because Pikmin 3 is a damn masterpiece.

What I wanna say is just give me Pikmin 4 now Nintendo. Thanks.

To be fair this idea sprung from a fanfic I wrote (and never finished) years upon years ago on GameFAQS 😂

Would there be something you'd recommend to improve on the idea though? I agree it could use more refinement but I'm still very intrigued by the idea of encountering the nocturnal life on the planet where it has some stealth-survival elements in the RTS genre

I think it's a great idea, it's just not for me. I'm a "retry the day whenever a Pikmin dies" kind of guy

I respect that a great deal, and sympathize a great deal. That was my hell especially with the damn cave systems in Pikmin 2 because it was nigh impossible to get enough purple Pikmin for that dumbbell in the final area

I never really thought about getting Hey! Pikmin because word of mouth didn't seem that good? IDK. I guess it is more of an exploration and puzzle based sidescroller but I really don't have any idea what that means for the game itself and how good the progression feels. Thinking of buying it sometime soon.

I think there may still be a demo available as another posted mentioned. Personally, I loved the game and found it to be an excellent distillation of the series into 2D. It's intentionally slower-paced than a regular platformer (or its spiritual predecessor Kirby Mass Attack as @beaglor mentioned). But Pikmin is necessarily slower than something like Mario or Zelda in 3D so it really worked for me.

Where the design really shines are the boss battles and the harder and more complex levels hidden away and in the later parts of the game. And especially in trying to obtain 20 Pikmin in a level and safely get them to the end, which is one of the toughest challenges of any recent game to me. That nets you a gold medal on the level. I still have a couple levels I didn't manage to do it in. I poured in many hours attempting to on all the levels though. I also love the treasures they came up with and the return of a Piklopedia-esque feature.

sounds really intriguing to be honest. A demo would be optimal for me. Good idea.

I loved it. Hope you dig it too. About the lack of 3D, I agree with @beaglor that it's unfortunate, but I think it was a necessity of choosing the touchscreen for the action. So it feels like a DS game in that way.

I think Hey Pikmin ! reception was pretty unfair. It feels the game was not given a proper chance because "lol Arzest" and Switch was the hot new thing.
The game feels like a long lost DS pikmin game (in a good way)
Among the various things I liked about it was the small skits you encounter throughout levels. They were reminiscent of the Pikmin shorts and really help carrying for your little squads.

Oh, I forgot all about those skits. They were really engaging and just as you said they feel similar to the Pikmin shorts. To me it felt like a very Miyamoto-requested touch to convey the feeling of adventuring with the Pikmin. Also agree Arzest is unfairly maligned here. (I also think Yoshi's Island DS is under-appreciated.)

Actually I hope that carry over to 4. And that was my feeling also "Myamoto has probably requested that" lol

After Pikmin 3D sold 2 million copies, a port with some few extras (and it may go on to sell more, lets see) i think its impossible a pikmin 4 wont happen.

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with this thread because it got me excited for Pikmin 4 again and at the same time, deep inside I know it is not coming anytime soon if at all. :p

I could totally see an interview in which Miyamoto says the technology just wasn't there in 2015 and that only now could the Pikmin 4 he envisioned be realized
didn't he say something similar when they revealed Pikmin 3 in 2012? With HD and so on. Wouldn't really shock me if he would mention something similar again.

I am still wondering why they rebooted it in 2019 and what direction change they are going for. Maybe more open exploration with bigger maps? Who knows.

Personally speaking I hope the maps don't get too big or interconnected because I love the flavor and diversity in atmosphere each map brought to the table. They always were a perfect mix of not too big but still exciting to learn and explore.

maybe they it was rebooted because they finally had some free EPD 10 staff after Mario Maker 2

I kinda like the idea of having thorny rose-like Pikmin. They could for example shoot some kind of projectile being the first Pikmin type having a range attack.

They would have two different modes. Turret mode and a barrier mode but are completely unable to transport or carry things.

Turret mode would be them being completely stationary. They would shoot some kind of thorns. They can't move when you want them to shoot at stuff. And they wouldn't do too much damage but making them valuable because they can hurt enemies while you yourself have to deal with avoiding hazards or enemies.
Or they could protect other Pikmin that are carrying things to your base.
They would also pull enemies if you don't pay attention making it risky when dealing with larger enemies.

Barrier mode is a little bit different. Its basically a vine. Two Pikmin of this type could form a thorny vine between each other. The range of this isn't unlimited and the barrier could also be destroyed killing the Pikmin in the process. But it could be used to defend areas or controlling enemies/routes stalling them a bit. The enemies would also get damaged themselves if they try to destroy it. They could also act as a decoy for example because the barrier would be sturdier then their turret form.

Rock Pikmin would be immune to this for example when playing multiplayer. It would also also allow you to build bridges only Rock Pikmin or Thorn Pikmin could pass.

Just throwing random thoughts around because its fun to think about all the possibilities.

EDIT: I guess I love to write 'for example'

Kind of related.. I bought The Wild at Heart last night and played about 40mins. It's very much an indie Pikmin so far and not even subtle. Find sprites, throw them at mushrooms and rocks to clear paths, throm them at piles of branches and they'll go build a bridge. I like it so far, scratching that itch a little
