I used to be addicted to beating the game in as few days as possible. Getting to the boss in Garden of Hope the first day you land on it is satisfying.

An absolute masterpiece of a game. Is it the best game on the Wii U? That would mean being better than Breath of the Wild...

... And yet...

So this has been the year that I finally play Mission Mode, and I really had no idea what I was missing as a kid. I've been grinding through completing the treasure collecting missions, and these compact scenarios are absolutely perfect for creating interesting choices and strategy. I hope that Pikmin 4 also has a robust challenge or mission mode.

To this day, Pikmin 3 still has the single best fire effect I've ever seen in a game. It's practically photorealistic.

pikmin3firehhjmd.gif

Even more impressive that it's not just a background or pre rendered element, but is actually an interactive part of the game. Nothing else I've seen has ever made me say "Yep, that's fire" like Pikmin 3.

The whole game might be the most graphically impressive Nintendo game in history.

Even if there ends up not being a Switch Pro: the Switch is way more capable than the Wii U, in just about every metric.

Pikmin 4 is going to be an absolute stunner. Believe it.

I need to actually play Pikmin 3 for real. I got it for free on Wii U when Nintendo did that two free games deal. I played it for a couple of hours, liked it, but never played it again for some reason. I don't know why I never gave it an honest try, but Pikmin 4's announcement really makes me want to go back and do so.

Love Pikmin 3, but would like to take this as another chance to be bitter about it being one of the rare Wii U games to not improve the resolution. In the case of most 720p Wii U games, they'd remain 720p on Switch portable, and end up 900-1080p docked. In this case, it remained 720p on Switch docked, and went 576p portable.

I just picked this up the other day after the Pikmin 4 announcement and seeing the sale. I’m enjoying it so far but had a question since I’m new to the series (apart from playing a bit of the first game years ago).

Is there a specific structure to how the days need to be played out? For example I’m on Day 5 and there’s a signal from the Captain still but I’m not quite sure where to head next — the way to him seems blocked off and there’s a bunch of green round markers on the map. Is the idea to just explore as much as you can during each day, or do you need to perform specific tasks each day to progress in the story? I get sort of stressed by the day timer, as well as the juice and whether or not I need to collect fruit on each day — and I’m still getting used to managing Alph and Brittany.

Pikmin 3 is an especially linear game, so your current objective should be to get to the captain's signal by unblocking the path. The green markers denote the fauna, most of which are hostile.

Perfect, thank you! I just also realized I didnt fully explore an area on Day 4 so I should probably go that way.

The juice mechanic is more of a similar but FAR more forgiving version of the time limit mechanic of the first Pikmin (where you had an explicit number of days to complete your objective). On the first playthrough, you should be pretty OK, at least until you get the hang of the game prior to going to later areas; it's usually safe later on to go without gathering fruit for a day.
But that provides replay value, seeing if you can collect fruit and progress through the game with a higher efficiency, lower Pikmin mortality rates, etc.

Yeah, it's there to create a feeling of urgency but without the stress-inducing time management of the 1st game and is there to only challenge the extreme novice gamer or remind the player that this isn't an open world to just endlessly faff about in.

I'm definitely going to do a series replay, maybe early next year. Yes, that includes Hey! Pikimin... (I really like it and would love a sequel).

Thanks for the advice, I had a much better time playing through Day 5! I couldn’t beat the boss but did so on Day 6 and used the extra time to get more fruit types.

In conclusion, my love for Pikmin 3 is back in full force, perhaps stronger than ever before, and I am excited to endorse it to others in the future. A hypothetical sequel has regained its footing as my most anticipated game from Nintendo. I pray nightly that it is happening, and I hope it is a triumphant display of the level design and art capabilities of Nintendo EPD. If Nintendo launches new and more powerful hardware in the near future, I hope that Pikmin acts as an early technical showcase as 3 was for Wii U.
I can't believe I said this like a week before it happened

I know it will never happen, but I would love for handheld mode to try and bring back the touch controls from 3.

People may say the Wiimote control scheme was better, but for me, nothing was as intuitive as using that touchscreen and stylus to select and throw Pikmin.

Seeing that this is on sale again right now is tempting me to double dip and replay, even though I already have it on Wii U and could just play it there

Really fun game, only downside of the switch version is it being unable to fully imitate the Wii U set up. Was a blast using the two screen approach to plan out and optimize your day

Yeah I think I’d miss that aspect, plus the touchscreen controls feel really intuitive to me. but I kinda want to play the extra content.

I think future titles in the series should return to the sense of weirdness Pikmin 2 had. Pikmin 3 attempts to bring back some seriousness to the story but it kinda falls flat in comparison to Pikmin 1 in my opinion. Regardless, I flip-flop between which game I consider the best in the trilogy constantly which probably speaks to the quality of the franchise and how unique each of the games are.
Well said! The dungeons in Pikmin 2 are really polarizing and I found them super stressful at first but over time I really came to appreciate their difficulty.

Great OP @Raccoon, it's so nice to see all the Pikmin love in this thread.

Personally, the original Pikmin came out when I was the same age that you were when the threequel released. So I remember vividly being super psyched for Luigi's Mansion and then Melee. I remember getting GCN on launch day and being a bit disappointed with the length of LM but still excited to see Nintendo games with this level of graphical detail. (I still have a lot of nostalgia for the system though, especially TWW, TTYD and Twilight Princess.) (And just to digress a little more, I think GCN was the last major graphical leap in my eyes, everything else has felt more incremental with maybe the exception of the jump to HD with Wii U.)

Anyway, about Pikmin, I remember renting it and thinking it was kinda strange and I could properly get into it at all. It just felt so...odd, compared to every other localized Nintendo franchise at the time. In retrospect I suppose Pikmin was the ARMS of the GCN launch window. I really didn't get on with the time limit.

Fast forward about 12 years as I continued to not appreciate the amazingness of Pikmin. My SO and I were super into Rayman Origins and with Legends about to release we agreed to get a Wii U in the summer of 2013 as soon as we finished 100%ing Origins. We did just that and purchased a brand new Wii U. And it turned out to be a lemon so returned it for another one. Only time that's ever happened to me with a Nintendo console. Anyway, we were obsessed with the Rayman Legends Challenges App available at the time and also got really into Nintendo Land and NSMBU. It was Nintendo Land that ended up being our gateway into Pikmin.

The Pikmin attraction in that game is a fully featured campaign packed with content. We played it in co-op and it's just a much more arcade-y version of the main series. I think a lot of Pikmin series fans would enjoy it a ton. It's also tough as nails. After getting super into that game, we finally tried the main series with Pikmin 3 and loved it. I talked a little about Pikmin 2 above but we ended up playing both of the original games in their NPC Wii versions. I'm really glad we did. Wiimote and Nunchuk is an amazing way to play these games. Especially 3 with the GamePad map. I'm really curious how they'll be able to match or top that control scheme with the new game, and I'm so psyched Pikmin 4 has finally been legitimately announced. I'm gonna treat myself to one real trailer and then go media blackout for it.

i bought it on WiiU and double dip on the switch version becos there was a 30% sale
i had to get it eventually cos of the portability and maybe there might be save file bonus with Pikmin 4 in the future
Glad that controls are much better on TV mode with Pro controller and loving those pikmin and gibberish voice acting in HD
Its very hard to play everyday in-game with no pikmin death and i will reset everytime when 1 pikmin died

remember to check out the 3DS version digitally or get it on pre-owned

for the current and new pikmin fans , i shall end my message with this pikmin short movies and hope there will be a movie version in 2026

Yea it’s definitely a downer that it’s gone but I’ll be honest the extra stuff and all the previous dlc being included makes up for it imo. Can still be just as efficient as the Wii U version just won’t be as easy at times without the game pad.

So, thanks to this thread, I've busted out the Wii U to play through the Pikmin 3 campaign again.

The game hasn't aged a gosh darn day. Absolutely magical from the moment you start exploring round the Garden of Hope. Everything about the opening is just perfect.

So im giving this game another shot, and 4 hours in i finally feel like im getting the hang of it, any time i get a new mission, my first objective is to clear obstacles, collect pikmin, and get as much fruit as i can find, then once thats done, ill focus on the objective during my next go around. The game no longer feels intimidating to me anymore, and im really enjoying it

I have the Wii U version in my backlog. When I get around to playing it, that's the version I'm going with. Good to hear that it holds up!

and one guy alone made all of this, even 64 games had multiple effect designers, some games nowadays have dozens but somehow pikmin 3 had only one

My kids bought this for me for $30 back in June 2021 for Father's Day and I still have yet to play it.

AND I bought it for the Wii U in a B1G2 deal from Target back in 2014, and never got around to playing it.

AND I borrowed Pikmin 1 from a cousin back in 2001, and wouldn't you know, I never got around to playing it.

So, MAYBE, I'll get around to knocking this one out. It's a relatively short game if my memory serves me correctly. I've messed around in the demo.

Personally the best use of the gamepad to this day, ever, for true multitasking that's rewarded by play and style.

Ugh, it's so great! I'm eyeing Pikmin 1 for this winter myself. 😄

Thinking about this game a bit more after the announcement of 4 I think back in 2013 this game singlehandidly convinced me that Nintendo as a developer studio would still have a bright future ahead of them. Even after all the doom and gloom in the first year of the Wii U. It is that good.

Update: I'd forgotten what a tough first boss that armoured crawdad is. It's easy enough coughing rock Pikmin to crack his shell, but he's got an awful ability for spreading his mandibles wide and devouring entire chunks of your Pikmin army.

No idea how people beat him with zero Pikmin deaths

i tried a lot of attempts especially during the WiiU days

i only had 20 pikmin , 10 rock 10 red and need to avoid its front teeth especially and attack its tail with red pikmin after the armour is gone

its not easy to kill the 1st boss without any pikmin deaths but it can be done according to Mr Miyamoto's interview many years ago
