StarTopic Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door |ST| A Classic Re_rinted!

Oh we're shit talking villains. Shadow queen/grodus are genuinely low tier to me. Both are bland and do nothing really all that new for rpgs. I'd take every Mario and luigi villain over them. want something space/Tech themed villain, invasion of the shroobs. Want funny villains who still get to trick Mario and get some Ws? Cacklette and fawful are great. (Also popple and rookie is peak).

I even like bowser trolling antasma in dream team. It's character growth. Sadly the main story doesn't have anything else going.

Paper Mario 64 bowser and team Bleck are great though. The mystery element of the ttyd and strong individual chapters are what keep me invested in the main plot.

The Shadow Queen tries to be your typical "true villain" but I think it doesn't really work because she gets very little screen time (although the scene where everyone cheers you on is good), nor is the twist particularly shocking to be memorable.

I think the M&L games have always been better than Paper Mario at villains, like you say, because they get solid screen time throughout the adventure, while Grodus appears very infrequently - hell, I'd wager Bowser gets just as much (if not more) screen time. I think most M&L villains have more personality as well - who doesn't love Fawful! - while Grodus and the Shadow Queen have some very generic writing.

Woo! Finally finished tonight! Game got off to a pretty slow start (chapter 3 especially) but it finished strong. The build up in chapter 8 to the final boss was great. It felt like a proper jrpg ‘desperate struggle’ ending, just with Mario characters. The writing was really the driving force behind my enjoyment, and it’s plainly obvious how it benefits from having unique supporting characters.

I think the game is kinda weak as an rpg though. It boggles my mind that this makes fans so rabid and aggressive. There is a bit of build variety but it’s still overall too simple for its runtime. Give me something weird like Origami King or Sticker Star any day over the largely autopilot numbers game here.

It’s not enough to drag down the experience though. It’s maybe not as sharp as Origami King, but it’s still pretty damn sharp. I hope we’ll get to see ports of the other games someday.

I have gotten to Chapter 7

I do not understand why so many major GameCube era games did this late game padding via fetch quests and backtracking. It's so annoying and unnecessary. I am hearing it was even worse in the original because the hub with teleporting pipes to all previous locations didn't exist in that
Also the fact that in the original, the only way to get to Glitzville was by the blimp in Rogueport, requiring you to backtrack there twice for General White.

Yeah, a friend told me the quick travel hub was not a thing in the original, that must have made the whole ordeal infuriating

It was a thing, just a little less convenient. There were two rooms in the underground area with two pipes each, giving fast travel to Petalburg and The Great Tree, and then to Keyhaul Key and Poshley Heights. Twilight Town and Glitz Pit did not get pipes because they both have direct travel to Rogue Port to their main town anyway.

Ah gotcha. Still annoying, compared to how the current version does it (and that's still annoying to me haha)

I finished this game.

It was good overall, 8.5/10. Overall I think TTYD and TOK are roughly equal in overall quality. TTYD feels a lot like Fallout New Vegas, in that it was an objectively good game that its very shrill and very annoying fans have built up to be this flawless unimpeachable standard of the genre (it's not), and poison any discussion for any future game in the series by relentlessly comparing it to this specific game in particular, what the new game may be trying to do be damned.

It's a good game, but it has definitely been extremely overhyped in the years since. GameCube era games usually hit me as hard today as their praise at the time suggested even if I play them for the first time today. This one I definitely feel is something I may have appreciated more if I played it at the time.

It's also comparable to Fallout New Vegas in its reputation for attracting trans women.

The volume on this is just really low, to the point where I have to put on headphones to enjoy it. Hadn't experienced this with any other Switch game.

So, after all, this is best Nintendo game of 2024, who could foresee this?
Hol up... Let them cook.

I can't wait to play Brothership, but honestly, this needs to be the best M&L game to beat TTYD. I will feel very satisfied if Brothership is better than Dream Team and Paper Jam.
The best type of games, are those who are made with love and it being made by former M&L devs makes me confident of being a very good game.

Will it be better then bowser insider story's... Probably not, but at the end it's a good first step.

It's really, really tough! Cause this remake is great, but it's also in a year with Another Code, Famicom Detective Club, and a Zelda game WITH playable Zelda that's quite possibly the best in the entire series... it's really tough.

But it might still win out for me in the end. Gotta see how Brothership turns out...

I have still been slowly working my way through the game. I played it on gamecube back in high school twenty years ago, so I decided to try something different this time. I am on the final star stone in my "Oops! All Badge Points" run. It has been good.

My hopes for the next Paper Mario is this exact battle style and progression with much larger and open level design like Origami King.

I think it's a given that the next Paper Mario game will incorporate the best elements of both Origami and TTYD. I personally think that Partners will be back. TOK had a Partner-ish system, after all. And with the TTYD using TOK's engine and having Partners in it, it'll be easier to implement.

I also think this lays an easier foundation for Intelligent to remake PM64, Super or both

PM64 remake with added content of any kind boutta top any GOTY list for me

I hope we don't see a Paper Mario 64 remake until AFTER the next new game in the series. I played Paper Mario 64 for the first time on Switch and I loved it, but just like TTYD it definitely has too many design relics from the time period. I want to see what the future holds.
