Discussion One-shot RPG's: I love 'em! What are your favourites?

7threst

Hello, lady of the house speaking?
Pronouns
He/him/his
RPG's come in all sorts and sizes, but a lot of the well known games have something in common: they are part of a serie. There is no problem in that. I love me some Dragon Quest/Megami Tensei/Final Fantasy (more of a JRPG player myself, but same goes for Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Baldur's Gate etc.). Still, there are a lot of RPG's that I consider one-shots: RPG's that just received one game. Wether it is because of lack of succes, no financial backing for a sequel, whatever, a lot of these games have semi-uniqie systems and stories worth telling. Best of all: you don't need to play other games in the series.

I admit: this topic is secretly also a sequel-begging thread because who doesn't want a Skies of Arcadia II haha!

Anyway, here are three of my favourite one-shot RPG's. I love to hear yours! Let's make this a topic of RPG's that are worth playing even though they are mostly forgotten :)

Skies of Arcadia

Man, what's not to love about Skies of Arcadia? It's to me the perfect RPG in that it combines a great (I admit, also a bit cliched) story with addicitive gameplay that switches between standard RPG turn based battles and more tectical ship battles which are really, REALLY addicitive! Also, I love the cast! Happy Vyse and Aika found their way into the Valkyria Chronicles series. The Dreamcast version is great but the amount of battles is frustrating. Luckily they fixed that with the Legends release on Gamecube.

Lost Odyssey

lost-odyssey-2bfj7z.jpg

Lost Odyssey was one of two games Sakaguchi's newly formed Mistwalker would release on Xbox 360 (the other one was Blue Dragon). And man, paired with an OST by Nobuo Uematsu this makes for a very atmospheric game full of feels. Not everything is great though, some characters are kind of out of place, especially when they try to incorporate humour in the game. Sometimes Jansen (the joker in the game) is funny, but it feels kind of out of place with the game. Battles are turnbased and make use of a ring system not unlike Shadow Hearts. It makes for very engaging battles. And the writing in this game, especially A Thousand Years of Dreams, a written recollection of Kaim, protagonist of the game. This game is really worth it to sink time in even today.

Eternal Sonata

eternal-sonatauhkzf.jpg

Eternal Sonata is an Xbox 360/PS3 RPG with Chopin on his deathbed dreaming as backdrop for the story. Not surprising, everything, from character names to attack names, drips of musical references. During the game of course Chopin's awesome works are present (including of course Stanislav Bunin's renditions of classical works including the prelude made famous by Halo 3's 'Believe' campaign). Battles use an interesting system of light and dark on the battlefield that influence types of attacks and so forth. I do feel it is underutilized a bit, not really sure why. During the game gameplay is alternated with cut scenes that gives interesting information on real world events with the appropiate music and photographs placed in a time period. I wish the concept of this game is further explored with maybe other classical muscicians. But alas, I think this is the last one we will ever see.

So Fami, love to hear about your favourite one-shot RPG's people need to play!

Does Planescape Torment count? Numenera's like an unofficial sequel.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is the king of one-shot RPGs: such incredible atmosphere, addictive battle system, lack of filler, etc.

I've always been interested in Planescape Torment, I have to check that out. Though I admit, the isometric POV feels off putting to me. Probably something I have to get used to only, because the game itself seems really cool.

And I wanted to mention Panzer Dragoon Saga. It's a crime that game haven't got a proper remake until this day :(

I'll definitely second your love for Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata! I had a fantastic time with both (and I've replayed Lost Odyssey already once and might do it again at this rate).

My personal favorites I'd like to add to that are:
  • The Alliance Alive, which saw a multi-platform remaster two years ago, has fantastic characters and really lovely visuals. It also has a really versatile turn-based combat system and some interesting out-of-combat systems (including multiple ways to finish certain quests)
  • Fantasy Life (if you ignore its mobile-only sequel, which was still unlocalized as of earlier this year) has some of my favorite gameplay of any game ever and I keep replaying it because it's the game equivalent of comfort food for me
  • Ever Oasis is more of an action RPG, if that counts, but it has fantastic visuals and some fun town building mechanics on the side. I'd love to see a remaster of it on a non-portable console someday because it definitely deserves it.
I'll also second the appreciation for Planescape Torment if the general tone seems up your alley (I loved it but it's an awfully dark game), and while they're technically a series as of this year, the recent Owlcat Pathfinder games have also been really good (and Wrath of the Righteous specifically reminded me of PST in some ways)

Chopin's raindrop prelude was famous from the moment it was published.

The Halo commercial didn't make it "famous"

I know. But it's quite safe lots of people on here are probably familiair with it because of the Halo 3 campaign. Maybe should have worded that differently. Ah well.

Radiant History is fucking great (still salty we never got a follow up, and both times Atlus saw out fit to release on a handheld long past its prime).

I think Command Mission is pretty underrated/overlooked. It's a simple, fun RPG with a lot of style. The overworlds are interesting, the music is good, the story is... well, cheesy, but appropriate. Honestly can't think of any particularly bad things to say about it.

It's a shame that this, along with with the Battle Network series, are games Capcom apparently doesn't think are worth the effort of a rerelease. Maybe we can get a Mega Man RPG Collection.... And while I'm dreaming, they can add in all the Japan/event-exclusive content to the MMBN games.

Fantastic game right here

Hell yes. Some good taste in this thread. We need a remake or remaster or something.

I guess Iā€™ll bat for Cosmic Star Heroine, which I recently played. Story is alright but the battle system is a bit more involved than usual, because you canā€™t spam a single attack over and over. The skills have cooldown so you have to setup your combos and know when to defend and replenish your skills.

Also: The World Ends With You, one of my all-time favorite games. It did get a sequel, but back then I thought it was doomed to be a singular, but highly special, experience.

I have a huge soft spot for Radiata Stories:

It has really great artwork and atmosphere, the looping-day-cycles with something like 200 characters is amazingly well done (and puzzling out their daily routines and how to recruit them all is almost more fun than the game itself), a really jazzy and catchy soundtrack, and c'mon, you can just walk up to like literally every character in the entire game and have a duel with them by kicking them until they get annoyed. What other game has that?

Agree with OP on Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata. Radiata Stories posted right above me is excellent too. Wild the back third of the game is quite different depending on a huge choice you can make. Hope it gets ported one day so more people can play it.

I want to give a shout out to my all time favorite PS2 game Odin Sphere. Just a complete package from top to bottom with amazing story/characters, action/rpg systems, visuals, and music. Would be perfect on Switch :)

Glad to see Radiant Historia, The Alliance Alive and Skies of Arcadia all mentioned, those are some of my favourite JRPGs!

I feel Alundra should be included on a technicality as the sequel bears no resemblance to Alundra at all. Like, nothing at all, except they shoehorned the title in probably to drum up sales and disappoint all fans of the original.

Ah, but what a fantastic top down action RPG the original was. Difficult bosses, infuriating platform sections, but great and rather harrowing story, and beautiful sprite work. It oozes charm.

About a year ago I hacked my PS Classic and replayed this gem. Would be right at home on Switch. Matrix Software, the devs, appear to specialise in mobile titles and ports for big name publishers like Square Enix and Nintendo. Not sure if they or Sony own the IP.

P.S. where are you lovely lot uploading your cover art to? I wanted to include some media for Alundra but most of the YouTube vids are long plays.
