I enjoyed those duels during the Online Play Test, but quickly discovered in the full release it's a game I've no desire to get good at.
I've found myself feeling exactly the same way. It's too imposing and frustrating, and very little fun to improve in online. I'd much rather put that time and effort into Splatoon

1. Soccer - It's the best depiction of what a match of the real thing looks like since the PES Playmaker days. I get great joy from a soccer game where positioning is more important than dribbling or shooting skills. I've employed zonal marking in this game and I've employed man-to-man marking, and I've switched fluidly between them and both tactics make sense and are rewarded! That gets an A27+ from me.

2. Volleyball - It's basically a game about timing, not much deeper than a series of well-disguised quicktime events, but there's just enough opportunities to disrupt opponent's rhythm to create exciting back and forths. I always considered volleyball a top tier video game sport, and it feels nice to have this cool little playable proof that's easy to jump into for a match or two.

3. Tennis - It's Wii Tennis with less precision and more strategy. I don't have the precision on my shot placement like I used to have back in my Wii Sports days, either because the motion controls are worse or I'm old and washed up and suck now. Either way, the new stamina mechanic makes up for whatever we may have lost going from Wiimote to Joy-Con.

4. Bowling - It's Bowling. Golf, when it comes out, will probably get a similar rating of "It's Golf."

5. Badminton - It's my least favorite of my most played sports. I've given the controls plenty time and chances to click with me. So far they won't. If they ever do, Badminton would easily move above Bowling and Tennis.

6. Chambara - It's a fun, dumb time until you run into someone who mastered the way of the sword. I enjoyed those duels during the Online Play Test, but quickly discovered in the full release it's a game I've no desire to get good at.
Agree with your list, soccer and volleyball are easily the two best sports in this game imo. Makes the whole package worth it.

My four are original happy, cool sunglasses smiley (which I mostly use as a I/We got this), the about to cry smiley face, and the girl crying (which in Soccer I sometimes use for out of stamina lol). So two degrees of positive and two degrees of negative.

I’m hoping we get a straight I’m sorry emote in the future.

The idea of using the Cry or Oh No stamp for when I'm running out of stamina and whoever I'm in a sprinting contest with is about to overtake me and head the ball into goal is enough to make me wanna put those back in my set, haha.

Would have to find what to get rid of, tho. I can't live without the Shocked face. I spam that everytime the Golden Ball shows up to signal my wonder and amazement at witnessing such a sight.

I had a great session this evening, and I've developed my thoughts on the sports a bit more.

1. Badminton
This is, to my mind, a quintessential representation of the series. You swing in directions with varying force, with potential to miss by way of timing or positioning. It's ultimately quite simple, but very fun to play and refine.

2. Volleyball
The more I play it, the more I enjoy it. Yes, the basic gameplay is very simple, but the different motions are satisfying to pull off, and the teamwork is great fun.

3. Tennis
I still like tennis on Nintendo Switch, but it has become a very precise, nerve-wracking game. While badminton encourages or even demands broad movements, I always end up playing tennis with my Joy-Con close to my chest, trying to carefully swing at the exact moment and in the exact way needed. I enjoy it, but I somehow also don't find it very fun.

4. Soccer (Football)
I really, really want to love this game's take on soccer. It has a ton of Wii energy, from the oversized ball to the silly head bunting, but I still can't get it to actually work consistently. The passing function is especially unpredictable, often leading to devastating results. The greater positioning, strategy, and teamwork also afford it points. It's the reverse of tennis: I find it very fun, but I somehow don't enjoy it.

5. Bowling
Bowling is functional, ostensibly. It works as bowling does. The survival matches are a fun idea, but when I'm on a losing streak I get sick of playing three frames at a time.

6. Chambara
It's the only game of the six I didn't play this evening. I really, really hate it.

I’m curious what does the three set variants mean? Is that why some people seemingly have slightly different stuff?
yep, everyone gets either the A set, B set, or C set for each collection

"green eyes" are one of the unique items in the first simple collection that identifies one of the groups

Huh that’s interesting. I think I have green eyes? Hoping we get everything ultimately even if it is shuffled around for a bit. I want a green hair color. I think only CPUs have that so far.

Had a good night playing most of these games.

Bowling- I still manage to get into the top 3, but I cannot figure my grove out to save my life.

Volleyball- This is probably my favorite new game in the series. I love the back and forth and spiking.

Tennis- Classic, but fun. I have been on a good streak lately.

Soccer- I have a lot of fun playing as goalie. I wish there were some more communication options between teammates, but otherwise it is a blast.

Chambara- It is like playing chess, and I love it.

Badminton- Ok, this is the one game where I am absolutely helpless. All I can do is volley back and forth before I fall down on a spike. Not sure what I am doing wrong, but I need to get better at this game.

Also still waiting on Golf to show up......

This game really didn’t have any longevity for me.

The games are all fun at first but I don’t really have much desire to just do the same matches online over and over.

Would have preferred a more robust offline experience, ranking up, getting high scores etc.

you need to really exaggerate your swings. if you swing left or right it'll go left or right. carefully using the drop shot helps too

How do you play tennis? my shots is not accurate even though i try to swing the joy cons to the right but sometime the ball goes to another direction so i decided to swing it randomly like a lunatic

timing is super precise in tennis. I tend to play very reservedly. badminton on the other hand is all about big swings

The game has decided that I don't get to play bowling anymore. Three times I queued up for bowling and three times I got the special lanes that I hate. My rank is D-. I turned off the ranking specifically to avoid this stuff. The spin just doesn't work. I can twist my entire arm around and do a freaking backflip and the ball will go perfectly straight.

I thought I was going to stick around for a little while to get the cosmetics but I only got as far as getting the first one this week before tapping out. Getting crappy bowling over and over again and being paired up with the worst teammates possible in the other sports just makes playing the game absolutely infuriating.

I had fun for a couple of weeks. I don't regret getting the game, I just wanted to pour out all my salt.

The direction of your swing doesn't matter in tennis. Shot placement depends on the timing of when you hit the ball. Early and you'll send the ball cross-court the way you swung the racket across your body, e.g. left on a right-handed forehand, right on a right-handed backhand. Late and the return will go down the line, so straight or even further towards the side of your body the ball was at when you hit it.

I’m very surprised with badminton. I thought it was going to be my least-favorite sport and I hated that we got it instead of something like table tennis. But it’s honestly my favorite sport of the six so far.

It is really fun and you can get some really good rallies going with people. Gets pretty strategic if you go up against someone that knows what they are doing. Definitely my favorite.

Had my first opponent rage quit. Guess they didn’t like getting worked in badminton. Wish I still got the points for this since it’s a big waste of time to get no progress.

I've rage quit by setting the controller down, which actually times you out after a bit

there's a non-negligible chance your opponent threw their joy-con across the room and got disconnected that way

I am simultaneously the best player in the world in Badminton and the worst that ever was in Tennis. I have no idea what I'm doing either way.

Interesting, our opinions on tennis and badminton are diverging in opposite ways lol. In badminton, I'm basically just doing my absolute best to make sure I don't swing too early and hitting it either left or right. There doesn't seem to be much to it other than hitting it where your opponent isn't without mis-hitting it, and I'm finding it's somehow overly intense yet dull at the same time. I think this comes from essentially needing to mess up to actually lose a point; it's very, very difficult to consistently set up good shots against anyone who knows how to play defensively, leading to very drawn-out rallies that get stuck in the same ~6 shot loops.

Meanwhile in tennis I'm having great fun aiming shots and mixing up spin. It's somehow more forgiving while also giving you opportunities to be more directly aggressive.

The direction of your swing doesn't matter in tennis
I don't think that's accurate to say, even if swinging right doesn't mean the ball goes right. It's usually easier to aim a shot that goes across you than an inside-out one; there's still advantages to being deliberate with the side of your body you choose, and the side you pick determines how timing changes the direction.

I could use some troubleshooting help.

I used to be able to play online co-op with one NSO profile and one local-only profile. When I tried the same yesterday, the system prompted me to link the local profile to a Nintendo online account, which I don’t want to do, and canceling out sent me back to the profile select screen.

Has something changed recently in the software or am I doing something wrong on my end?
