Changes:
  • Turok - Dinosaur Hunter: They redid the AOT recompilation code and did a small change to the Lua script.
  • Perfect Dark: They did significant changes to the Lua hacks and added rendering hacks. Every file has been updated in one way or another.

There's a lot of weird PAL versions for the rest, but hey, that's how they were back then so...Anyway there's a lot of hacks for these, some of them have hacks I've never seen before.

Perfect Dark's motion blur effect when you get poisoned/hit seems to be fixed but I still feel like it's overdoing it? I'll wait for Graslu00 if he wants to say something about it. I don't think this is the only fix though.

Seriously though would it kill Nintendo to have a public changelog about this?
They're the ones who fucked up we shouldn't have to play the guessing game.

So with this update, that makes seven N64 games available on western NSO service and not on the Japanese service. Its just fascinating to me that this list keeps on growing, and what makes it weirder to me is the fact that Extreme-G and Iggy's both have Japanese versions of the game, but are not on there. Its just interesting to see this happen, because usually its the Japanese service that gets more games.

My understanding is that N64 emulation continues to be the problem child of Switch's emulation and was created by a different group than some of the other NSO console emulators.

Does it seem feasible that Nintendo could build a new N64 emulator at some point or do they seem to just be patching the holes as they pop up indefinitely? Could a new console that supports 4K give Nintendo any incentive to build a new emulator or does the existing emulator already support it?

Considering the amount of work being done I just feel like that emulator will still be around even on Switch 2.
Also the existing emulator can support 4K without trying too hard I'm pretty sure. This is already upscaled in HD to begin with, the same process can be used in 4K, but I'll be very honest: people who wants 4K N64 graphics are out of their minds imo

I really wish Nintendo would realize some people would want an integer scaled 240p option, considering one of their biggest games on N64 makes heavy use of prerendered backgrounds that ONLY look good when the game's running at 240p.
Plus it just generally covers up the N64's texture filtering and looks a whole lot nicer.

If I can keep asking questions, do you think they'll eventually be able to get the existing emulator into a good position based on the patches and progress so far? Or am I misunderstanding and this has always been a matter of basic game-by-game QA issues that they're being too relaxed on and that they could have easily avoided?

I still would rather see them rework entire parts of the emulator or making another one entirely.
This is still feeling like patchwork on top of bad emulation to fix problems.

Hey folks,

Is there a topic in the famiboard where we can exchange friend codes?

Sorry if this isn't the appopriate topic to ask this but I'm looking for people who want to play NSO games online, like the old Mario Partys (not the best time for that with Jamboree coming), some Goldeneye and stuff.

My friends are all graphical elitists so they don't want to play old stuff online, only new games.

I'm also looking to start a Four Swords journey on the NSO soon.

New Natethehate poll asking about a new NSO service 🧐
I will not get my hopes up for GC NSO I will not get my hopes up for GC NSO I will not get my hopes up for GC NSO I will not get my hopes up for GC NSO I will not get my hopes up for GC NSO I will not get my hopes up for GC NSO I will not

Edit: But if it was... I'd hope opening up the app will do the traditional GC boot up video and as the final cube drops it opens up to the selection of games available

But if it's a music streaming service there's no way in hell I'd be using it. We already got two dozen music streaming services; unless they have Springsteen's catalog on there I can't think of a bigger waste of time and resources just to continue gatekeeping their music.

Music streaming service would be neat but would hopefully just be rolled into the cost and not anything additional. Even better if they could somehow allow you to pair it with Smash Bros’ “My Music” feature

Feeling like Nates Poll is referring to the playtest game receiving a wide release.
Still holding out for GameCube! I'm not sure how difficult the emulation would be, but Sega Saturn would be pretty neat to add. Do we know if Sega is still interested with this? Master System would also be nice!

Wat happened with that story that Nintendo was making new GameCube controllers? Or am I imagining things?

Fami when Nintendo Music starts getting more Sega content updates than the Genesis app

I do wonder if new NSO releases will have accompanying music release. Feels set for a double whammy release of people gushing about the music after playing the new release.

If Nightdive's strategy is to release these games in hopes of people buying the remasters, it is working.

I'm playing Turok 2 and having a good time after kinda flaking on the franchise. Now, I'm dangerously close to getting that remaster.

There’s something fun of seeing third party games on NSO.

I’m waiting for RE2 N64, such an interesting port

So far Turok's Hi-RES-LB mode has been fine for me, along with Tooie's. Everything seems to be scaling as they should.

Haven't tried Perfect Dark yet, so idk that one.

Tooie is actually impressively stable, dare I say better than Xbox, which is even more surprising since it’s one of the toughest games to emulate! Though it does have a few issues:

1. The demos are faster than the should be, though it’s apparently a common issue so it’s fine
2. The races in Cloud Cuckooland are actually impossible. Mashing as hard as I can, making no progress. Though I’m not sure if that’s a real bug or it really was that impossible all along

Canary Mary has really bad rubberbanding. You are supposed to stay behind her, and near the finish-line mash like the wind. Just mashing the whole race, you will never catch her.

It's actually lowkey sad that Sega Genesis has been rotting.

I think it's the main reason NSO Expansion is 50$, only because the license fee?

it's kinda baffling that Sonic 1 nor Sonic 3 and knuckles isn't there.

With Perfect Dark I remember it not changing the menus like it should, so I just assumed they removed it for that and Pokemon Stadium 2.
It does change the menus for the European version for some reason.
But you can also try on Excitebike 64 and stuff, but really, don't worry about the resolution change. It's not gonna cause anything bad.

Yeah, I was less worried about it causing anything bad, but more just wondering what work would have to go into it to ignore it because a resolution change happens about every screen change. Though, I guess nothing if it's not actually ignored, I only tested Perfect Dark US which just doesn't work properly.

I just bought my next set of vouchers for Mario and Luigi and Metroid Prime 4 and it says they are valid for 12 months. Weren't they valid for 24 months before? Maybe I'm misremembering.

Hopefully Prime 4 is out by then haha.

Tried that as well, doesn’t work. Most likely just a skill issue at this point lol

Doubt we will ever see the original Genesis ROM for Sonic 3 & Knuckles ever again sadly.

They remade the game for Origins because of the music issues.. and going forward, that's the only version they'll ever rerelease.

So do the “hi-res” expansion pak modes actually increase the resolution?
No, but depending on the game they sometimes use higher quality 2D assets
Stadium 2's menus use the N64's 480i output, so those backgrounds are much higher quality than say, Pokemon Puzzle League
