Honestly folks, I think you're being extremely optimistic if you think an announcement/reveal is happening in September.

We've got a new Zelda game launching this month. Zelda. And a limited edition Switch Lite! Do you really think Nintendo is going to want to draw attention away from the launch by revealing the Switch successor?

I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, but I suspect Nintendo will want to focus on Zelda and Mario Party before it pivots to the Switch 2.
As a daily lurker it is fun to see the exact same conversation every few pages followed by the same answers every few pages after, we then reach a conclusion and everyone is happy until then we begin the cycle anew a few pages later.

Circle of life.

sorry theres not enought smoke/fire to indicate Nintendo will reveal Switch sucessor this month, not enought rumblings for a septembre reveal

Given the extremely strong likelihood of BC, players are likely to play the new Zelda on the Switch 2. Win/win.
If the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, then people will think, “Ok. I'll buy Zelda now because I know I can play it on the new Switch 2 later as well.”
If the Switch 2 is not backwards compatible, then people will think: “Ok. I'll buy Zelda now because I can't play it on the Switch 2 later.”
I see no reason why a Switch 2 announcement would hurt a Zelda game.

Like I said, I'm happy to be proven wrong, and I'm sure in the big picture you're probably right.
But if I were calling the shots at Nintendo, I wouldn't put the two even remotely close together. I just wouldn't.

Is this a "You either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain" situation? ;[ ;] ;|
It's a deeply pessimistic take that happens to be not that bad. I'll be playing a new Zelda soon, then I'll have the holidays as a break from work, my favorite of the Mario RPGs is coming back, then my birthday in January. Either the reveal happens at the start of that incredible run, or at the end of it, and I couldn't be mad either way.

But if I were calling the shots at Nintendo, I wouldn't put the two even remotely close together. I just wouldn't.
Why? I keep reading this here. What is supposed to happen if Nintendo presents the Switch 2 shortly before the release of Zelda? Is it really supposed to reduce Zelda sales? Who would really say, “Wow, Nintendo just showed me the Switch 2 that's coming out in a few months. So I've decided not to buy the new Zelda game that's coming out soon that I actually want to play!”?

I couldn't care less if Nintendo announces the Switch 2 before Zelda comes out. I also don't care if Nintendo releases a 4K 120 FPS ray tracing update for the Switch 2. The Switch 2 has no influence on my decision to play Zelda on day one.

Jeff Grubb said that the State of Play should happen on the last week of September:

"I heard about a PlayStation State of Play in the last weekish of September, and they could have a PS5 Pro announcement there or can happen anytime before that."

imo, by and large
  • the people buying a Switch 8 years in aren't the type who would hold off to be early adopters of a new and more expensive system
  • the people buying a new Zelda game 8 years in aren't the type to hold off for 6 months or more just to play it on better hardware
I get the concerns/anxieties, but my personal hunch is Nintendo will have already mathed this kind of thing out and determined announcing now won't seriously undermine either holiday sales or Zelda/Mario Party/Mario&Luigi sales

I do feel like "last week-ish" sorta gives him a couple days either way as wiggle room. I think it probably is somewhere between the 23rd and 27th, but to me anywhere from like "Thursday or Friday in the third week" to "Monday the 30th, literally the last day of the month" would still reasonably fall under "last week-ish" personally

I agree. They will also do price drops in order to boost sales.

I honestly do not think Nintendo should be concerned about when Sony announces the pro. I might understand avoiding the same day, but if there are 2-3 days apart there is no problem. I do believe it would make a lot of sense to reveal it prior to Tokyo Game Show, so my money is on this week or the next.

For the people thinking a reveal will overshadow zelda, I have a question. When the playstation 5 was revealed on June 11, did it overshadow The last of us part II? The last of part II released on June 19. The game sold more than 4 million copies in their first weekend. (If it sold less than expected is another discussion, but if that would be your rebuttal I personally think the leak had a more negative effect than the ps5 reveal).

I don't know if it is revealed this month or next month or next year. But if a competitor can reveal a console next generation close to a big and important game, I think nintendo can too.

Uh just a thought

Didn’t Nintendo plan on selling 13mil Switches this fiscal year? If they announce Switch 2 before the holiday season, wouldn’t that cannibalize sales during the most important sales period of the year?

I hate to be that guy; I want a September reveal as much as any of you, but it’s worth thinking about

let’s go big: a different Switch successor will be announced every month from now till February. But only one is the real one, and you have to wait till May to find out which one.

It has been brought up many times, and quite a few of us don’t think they’ll over worry themselves about 100% hitting that goal as long as they nail the Switch 2 launch period. And it being announced now may even help OG Switch a bit depending on how they play it. Holiday season is not unimportant but it’s probably not the end all be all.

This is what I've been thinking too. I can only think that the new Lite would help the current sales target, but since the target pretty far off from what I've seen, announcing the successor could definitely hurt any final sales for the current Switch. But then again, is anyone really still buying the Switch if they haven't already? Ahh, on the one hand, some "leakers" are saying yes, this month, on the other hand, speculation is saying later on 😭 I guess all we can do is wait and see

See above posts concerning the consumer profile and who would buy a Switch now versus a next gen console.

As of right now I do not believe Switch has a chance of selling 13 million units with out a decent price drop or massive bundle during the Holidays. Switch 2 reveal will have an impact but shouldn't change the sales trajectory by that much. We are in different times but in the past Console successors are revealed and announced way before they launch and it's part of the cycle.

To me it all comes down to when the Switch 2 actually releases and manufacturing starts. If its coming out fairly early next year such as March or April, Nintendo really has no choice but to reveal. Between manufacturing, business partners, and 3rd party devs something would leak if its coming soon. If this is launching later in 2025 than yes Nintendo can wait on the reveal.

It's the Sony's month :

  • Astro Bot
  • PS5 Pro
  • State of Play
  • Death Stranding 2 Presentation
  • Celebrating 30 years with Ken Kutaragi in TGS

Yep good point with the price drop. If they announce Switch 2 in September and then price cut the Switch before the holiday season, it might help explain why they set such a lofty goal. I still think 13mil is never gonna happen by the end of the fiscal year, but it would help them get a bit closer

With or without the Switch 2 announcement, Nintendo is not gonna make that 13 million sales goal.

Pranked, because i still have another workday tomorrow in this first September week. And a whole weekend in this first September week.

Why do you wanna take away my weekend?!

;]
Nothing happened during the first two hours, so my timezone has already shifted to the next week.
It’s Nintendo's week! Only Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday(sometime).

Again and again I still think if we will get something this month, it will be a "random" social post with Name and Logo of the consoles, with the first trailer in october.

Would be the best thing to hype people and having the spot after PS5 Pro announcement.

Also, from a marketing perspective, doing this allows Nintendo to do a two big "shot" with the new consoles instead of "just" one trailer with everything in

We didn’t get a name and logo for the Switch until the reveal trailer, so it’s possible the successor will be the same

Yes, but I liked what Sony did with PS5, they dropped first the logo on socials, then the new Dualsense, and then the console design

It was honestly great. This time people already know the Switch concept, back in october 2016 they had to reveal all together

I think most people here just view it from the point of view that the forecast is impossible to reach without steps Nintendo seems unwilling to do, ie price cuts on the Switch. The collapse of Switch sales outside Japan this year is far too big for it to be realistic to sell 13,5 million Switches this fiscal year with current Switch prices. And i think Nintendo realize that themselves, the reason they did not adjust their forecast is because they plan to use the Switch 2 reveal to get the investors to be happy instead.

Also worth noting… I doubt Sony wants PS5 Pro to be revealed in the same week as Nintendo’s new generation of hardware. As others have stated, maybe Sony would move their presentation out of Nintendo’s way out of fear the online conversation would be cannibalized by Switch 2

Serious question, do you think Nintendo would have more knowledge of when the PS5 Pro is being revealed than media outlets? I dont know how this stuff works, just curious if they have ways of knowing this stuff to avoid clashes with their own announcements?

Furukawa already spoke on this. they are spending this year prepping for Drake. if sales take a hit, then so be it
