OPERATOR: l'd like to tell you all a little bit more about the Echo River.

Whoever sent you on this trip sure has a keen sense for liminal spaces. The Echo is a favorite for outliers and the wayward.

It's a journey that demands to be taken slow, full of spaces and places worth long consideration.

Newcomers ought hold caution tight — spend too long down here, the dark plays tricks on you. A river underground invites all kinds of strangers. Some of them you don't want to meet.

As you can tell from our humble hotline, being this far from the buzz in the sunlight seems to make our equipment more susceptible to strangeness. It's a quirk for some, inconvenience for others. The whole point for a rare few.

You can lose whole days down here. I've come to cherish the loss.

The full-timers see no need to keep up with the hustle, be apprised of the latest, give into the tendrils of "culture" that would choke out their own. I can't fault them for that. I'd ask that visitors respect that.

One could argue it forms some manner of seal — whatever this tacit agreement binds, I won't be the one to let it out.

MANAGEMENT's a bit fussy about the whole situation. You'd think WiFi was water with the way he talks. Can't perceive a future without him in it, bewildered by organic exchanges of gossip and goods. The slow inefficiency of crates down the Echo, huddled in boats much like mine...

Well, not mine. Company boat for company services. I get to steer this month while Ada's out.

Or, well. Not literally. Sometimes. But I've delegated that to give the hotlines my full attention. Be sure to thank Claire for her quality boatsmanship! Boatswomanship? Shipsthemship...

Another announcement from the Operator? And so soon after someone figured out that riddle, too!

At this rate, I'll be dreaming of rainbows and numbers...

* Volcanic always thought of herself as...a bit basic, at least compared to the colorful characters she regularly encountered. Present, but not the biggest stand-out. Content to let others take the reins, let others fight while she drifted around. But the last few months seemed to prove those assumptions wrong. From making peace within warring factions to discovering herself, Volcanic was taking action. And she was just as weird as the rest. Was it any wonder that she found herself along the Echo River, another step on a long journey into the unknown?

* The OPERATOR advised caution. And sure, Volcanic had no sneaky plans up her sleeve. But was the warning too late? Volcanic thought about how she ended up here, following the rings of a phantom phone. Maybe she was feeling rightfully paranoid as she dealt with another mysterious figure behind the scenes. Or perhaps the dark already had its grip on her, the trip to the Echo River merely its latest manifestation.

* But despite her worries, Volcanic took a deep breath and exhaled. The brightest lights shine in the breaker darkness, after all. Surely she was here for a good reason, and she had to discover that for herself.

* The OPERATOR seemed amicable enough. The real mystery lied in the MANAGEMENT running this voyage. The little that was known about him seemed in such stark contrast to the rest of this place. Focused on tech, obsessed with the self, not willing to take things slow and steady. But that didn't have to be the only source of information. Surely others could help. Volcanic found power through empathy - she hoped it would steer her correctly once more.

Coaching in fighting game tournaments happen? Like mid-fight in between sets? Just saw a video of it hapoen on EVO and wtf when did this start? (please don't answer I probably now the answer: when the money started rolling in).

I probably sound like old man yelling at cloud but I'm gonna be honest: I hate it.

As far as I know it's generally outlawed/frowned upon to receive coaching during sets, but yeah it feels kinda gross to see it.

Yeah, I understand it's getting professional with e-sports teams but this was just a bit awkward to watch, almost cringing.

Yeah. I'm somebody who's heavily involved with e-sports and there are going to be growing pains of acceptance towards things that are gonna be normalized. Coaching is one of them, but League and even Starcraft have made me more accommodating of what effort people put into e-sports.

I don't have e-sports experience but am from an arcade background, therefor I maybe kinda sound like an old sour person (which I am maybe a bit lol). I was just kind of surprised at this, haven't seen it before.

Hmm, decisions decisions. Well, let's get to it.

Dogwood Crease Designated Island

(You walk slowly, serenely across the soft earth. Unfamiliar notes akin to sage and juniper fill the would-be-dank air, playing off of a cedaresque baseline where no cedars have ever grown.)

(Your lanternlight flickers, licking the surroundings, as if to draw them closer to your glittering eyes.)

(You don't know if the dogwood is out of season or if the name is some tongue-in-cheek ode, a long-forgotten joke that you're decades too late to be in on. Either way, there are no dogwoods blooming here, no compasses to guide you.)

(That shouldn't matter, though. The island is small. So small, in fact, that it isn't quite an island – that would explain the name, at least. Someone here decided that this would be an island. That by sheer will, a technically-inaccurate naming convention would be followed.)

(The ground is abundant with mushrooms and lichen, including several species that you've never, ever seen. You conjure a myth from some distant memory... a notion that a long-forgotten trickster god had set their own ass aflame. The prank, of course, had backfired – and the lonesome, meddling god shuffled ass-down across the basalt.)

(Perhaps that's how lichen was born. It wasn't yours to know.)

(Some pile of detritus lies at the center of the imprecisely-designated landmass. From the pile, two wingspans left and back, a smaller-than-small gravestone bears the word ALWAYS. Under it, someone has scratched X#. You make a note.)

(Turning right, you peer through a copse of trees. For none but the briefest moment, another light catches you, a throb without glow. or... no... Glowing without casting. A pulse without ripples. Something. Something?)

(You swear it is there, but the moment you know to swear it, it's gone.)

(At first you feel nothing. Faint surprise, perhaps, putting all thoughts on hold. But nerves creep up, and you swear a hum lingers.)

(In this moment, you are not brave enough to blow out the lantern and see what you see.)

(You calmly, swiftly, return to the boat.)

I want to play Deadlock but I'm afraid to queue by myself since it sounds like it's inherited the Dota/CS:GO fanbase of being insanely toxic. I need friends to queue with. :v

Warbler's Nook Gas & Convenience

(The floating gas station is small but pleasant, bobbing up and down at a cant. You struggle to picture the anchor this thing uses... if it even has one. Maybe it's destined for the drift of the folky and old. The folky-old drift.)

(The snack selection is quaint and delightful – not quite your tastes, but you grab a roll of whatever "Nutmeg Hubble" is anyways. You're grateful for the strange, and you'll take it over the plain any day.)

(A handful of people are talking in the aisles.
JOLIE and COLT are debating the merits of attaching contact mics to ballast barrels. As far as you can tell, JOLIE thinks the maneuver might cost their noise set a certain "grit" – make the audience too soft to feel the "euphoric relief" that their final movement excels at. COLT seems disappointed, gesturing towards something they call "tonal anchors" with a wavering plea. Unfortunately for COLT, the plea itself gestures towards concession.)

(Elsewhere,
FINLEY barters with ABE for a pair of well-worn waders. "It will help with the work," she says, stiffly portentous. Must be some work...)

(The register is adorned with a scintillating curtain of beads. Its pulled-apart sides flank
JO, the greying and dear cashier of the Warbler's Nook.)

JO: What can I get for ya, hun? Just that today?

(You nod.)

JO: Gotta say, Nutmeg Hubble is a long-time favorite of mine. Damn near extinct, so enjoy it, y'hear?

(You hear.)

JO: Good! Welp, don't be a stranger. At least be a guest! and be sure to check the Bulletin Board on your way out – you never know what the Echo's got in store.

(You trust this woman with your life. If joy still roams this world, she is the wind at its back.)

(On the way back to the boat, you peer at the Bulletin Board. It's an overwhelming nest of wayward information, too much for anyone to parse in one go. But one flyer in particular catches your eye...)

(You brush past @chocolate_supra on his way out. Something has him excited, a barely-contained scramble tucked in his gait.)

(This is the break you were looking for – not any less cramped, not any less boaty, but a welcome change with bright fluorescents and strange stock.)

(Something's been bothering you. A lot's been bothering you, really. You are ready to shine, bloom, and be – ready for the world, for all that it is and can be... but this wasn't quite the trip you thought you'd be taking.)

(There's something regressive to you about moving further underground. A cramped boat. A strange river. Old wires and worn-down phones. It's certainly captivating, which you can appreciate, but... it's not for you.)

(No... it's not just that...)

(Surely things will get a little more exciting when you reach
The Long Drink – a lively bar with music both live and dead. and you're DEFINITELY looking forward to Some Kind of Stick Witch's one-woman show, "Clever Repetition." (and what the hell is up with @Suswave?! They've hardly talked to you this whole trip, despite pulling everyone together into this feeble little bonding exercise in what MUST be one of the WORST places to have ANY FUN EVER.)

JO: Can I help you, hon? I love your outfit, by the way – you're an absolute beam of sunlight in our dark little district!

(You thank her, tell her that you're still considering your options, and smile brightly. As soon as she looks away, your smile drops, and you feel guilty for not having fun here. You know it's not your fault. You know it's okay. But you still feel it.)

(After another moment contemplating some sort of squared cinnamon roll, you elect to cut your losses and head to the boat.)

(You turn. You look up.)

(A woman is standing there with red eyes and blue hair, long black sleeves and a green denim vest cut at the shoulders.)

???: Hey. Um, sorry if this is weird, but... I love your eyeliner.

you'll change the fucking world.

To be clear I'm estranged from my dad because he was your typical conservative asshole, but my mom and I are cool. Well, "were" cool until she died this year. :v

I have a lot of baggage with my parents lmao, but I appreciate the kind words.

I’m doing vouchers for LOZEOW and probably brothership
Yeah, that's my plan too. I'm cautiously eyeing the Lollipop Chainsaw remaster as well. Never got to play it on PS3 and apparently copies are hard to find these days (plus I don't want to set up my PS3.)

wait is it really?

I'm not watching trailers, I'm just aware there's some sort of second world.

If this really is supposed to be "TotK's ideas but in 2D," having an alternate map that's just a bunch of floating platforms is hilariously apt 😅

(You brush past @chocolate_supra on his way out. Something has him excited, a barely-contained scramble tucked in his gait.)
* Well, look who it was! Volcanic wasn't the only familiar face here. She didn't get to stop him, but Choco looked looked positively energized! Maybe it had to do with whatever he held close to him? How nice.

* Volcanic sighed. At least someone felt good down here.

* Someone else would be enjoying this trip more.

* Too bad she couldn't.

* Volcanic shook his head. Not now...
(No... it's not just that...)

(Surely things will get a little more exciting when you reach
The Long Drink – a lively bar with music both live and dead. and you're DEFINITELY looking forward to Some Kind of Stick Witch's one-woman show, "Clever Repetition." (That's almost worse.)

(Because she should be doing this with you. This should be for her. She wanted to see the world, and she's gone.)
* A cold, empty, bitter anger seeped into Volcanic's mind. And it had the perfect target.
(and what the hell is up with @Suswave?! They've hardly talked to you this whole trip, despite pulling everyone together into this feeble little bonding exercise in what MUST be one of the WORST places to have ANY FUN EVER.)
* Suswave ignored Volcanic.
(If anyone should understand what you're going through... it's them. and they just left you hanging when you said her name.)
* Suswave abandoned Volcanic.
(You've been foisted off to some drawling mystery man on a barely-stable hotline, as if that's supposed to make up for ditching you. For hardly speaking to anyone. For being the REASON THAT SHE'S G–)
* Suswave killed-
(That's not fair. That's not fair at all. You don't want to think it. But you do.)
* ...No, no, what was Volcanic thinking? Where did this malice come from? Suswave and her were cool! This whole thing was stressful for both of them! They didn't choose this. They wouldn't have chosen it, if given the choice. But...
(What could be more callous than that? She saved their life. She was your friend. She deserved the fucking world and she chose to be spare parts. and... and...)

(and you deserved better, too.)
* ...it hurt. It hurt Volcanic deeply. And what did Suswave have to show for it?

* Nothing.
(Now @Suswave dyes their hair. Wears color contacts. Pretends it's all fine, that it's all back to normal, that nothing happened. Frankly, it's DRIVING YOU UP THE WALL.)

(AND NOW YOU'RE TRAPPED ON A BOAT WITH THEM. AND THEY WON'T EVEN TALK TO YOU!!!)
* Was Volcanic really just mad of a sudden? Or...was Volcanic suppressing these dark thoughts? All this anger, building over six months of being positive, of following the wind.

* Volcanic tried thinking of the good thay happened recently. Empathy helped. It helped a lot. But it didn't remove the pain. It couldn't change what happened. And the one person she could talk to about it didn't even want to give her the time of day? How could they-
JO: Can I help you, hon? I love your outfit, by the way – you're an absolute beam of sunlight in our dark little district!
* ...finally, something to get Volcanic out of her head a bit. Someone who cares.
(The cashier has noticed that you're having a hard time here. At least someone has.)
Oh...uh, t-thank you!

* Volcanic wasn't about to dump her feelings onto a stranger, however polite she was. She flashed a bright smile as she maintained her composure.

I'm just looking around. I'll let you know if I need anything!
(As soon as she looks away, your smile drops, and you feel guilty for not having fun here. You know it's not your fault. You know it's okay. But you still feel it.)

(After another moment contemplating some sort of squared cinnamon roll, you elect to cut your losses and head to the boat.)

(You turn. You look up.)
* Volcanic froze.
(A woman is standing there with red eyes and blue hair, long black sleeves and a green denim vest cut at the shoulders.)
* She stared, like a doe caught in headlights.
???: Hey. Um, sorry if this is weird, but... I love your eyeliner.
* What.
(how is this happening)

(no fucking way)

(this is not happening this is not happening this IS NOT H–)

(You gain a shred of composure. You look again. You look again. You look again. You look again.)
* Volcanic blinked.
???: Sorry, I... I didn't mean to intrude.
...O-oh, um...
(Trick of the fluorescents. Her eyes are light brown. She has the same color lipstick as you.)
* Volcanic's face reddened. Her thoughts oscillated between sweet relief, utter detection, and an acute sense of embarassment. Of course it wasn't her. Volcanic was, once again, too in her own thoughts to think straight. No fault of this mystery girl who...still looked so much like her. And was so kind to her.

* ...But it wasn't her. No way. This was just a stranger. A very kind stranger. That was all. That was all there ever was, all it ever needed to be.

* Volcanic tried to take a breath. Tried to quiet her mind.
(call her)
* ...what.

* What was that?

* That wasn't her voice in her head.

* Volcanic's eyes caught those of the mystery woman again. She stared at her. Oh gosh, she was staring at this poor lady. Was she staring back? Volcanic couldn't tell. She didn't want to know.

R-right, thank you! For the compliment, I mean. You look lovely, too! Great taste in lipstick, am I right?

* Volcanic sighed. She was trying way too hard to seem normal.

...sorry, by the way. I didn't mean to stare. You just...you...

You reminded me...of...

...Uh-
(CALL HER)
* The voice in her head spoke louder.

* That was not her voice.

...I'm so sorry. I have to go.

* Volcanic swerved around, nearly knocking into someone standing right behind her.

Oh! Excuse me, pardon me.

* She puts up her hands. Surely this would diffuse the situation.

* ...nope, more stares. And surely the mystery woman didn't take any more kindly to this. Fuck.

G-got something on my mind, happens to the best of us, right? Haha. I really need to go, so sorry, so so sorry...

* Volcanic ducked her head down, stuffed her hands into her pockets, and stomped off. The only think more stormy than her steps were here thoughts.
(CALL 2USWAVE)
* The voice only grew louder. Volcanic could barely focus on anything else beyond this and her utter embarassment.
(You're already out the door. You don't need to go back. It's fine. It was awkward. You're not thinking about it. There's too much on your mind. Why do you feel sad? Why are you running away? What are you afraid of? Why is you guard so high all the damn–)

(CALL 2USWAVE)
* No. No. This wasn't her voice. This wasn't her thoughts.

* ...right? Besides...
(You... you don't know how you'd do that. She's dead. She's really, really dead. There's nothing left. @Suswave won't let there be. You don't even have her number. Not that she had one! What would you even do?!)

(YOU ONLY NEED ONE NUMBER TO MAKE THAT CALL)
* It dawned on her. Yes, of course. Just one number. The most obvious number. All Volcanic had to do was find that phone. That damn phone! All it took was just one key on that acursed number pad. And then...

* Volcanic began hyperventilating. She wouldn't do it. It didn't make sense. It couldn't make sense. Even if nothing else made sense down here. 2uswave would not want this. She chose what she chose, and she deserves to have her eternal rest.

* ...but why couldn't the thought leave her mind?

* The stress was too much for poor Volcanic.
(You fall to your knees on the dock. It was already too much. This... this is FUCKED.)
* It's over, isn't it? Why couldn't she move on?

So...video games, am I right? I'm actually between games right now, but work has tired me out! Astro Bot sounds fun, but I might wait until my birthday in like 2 weeks to jump in. Willing it to be a present, haha.
(As someone who missed the last major General thread event, what’s the Suswave/2uswave/Volcanic lore?)
I recommend you go check out the February ST and its many threadmarked recaps for the full story. It was a lot of fun, some of the most enjoyable time I've had on the forum!

...but to very loosely recap the 2uswave storyline:

2uswave was a major character from the first forum game. She was a clone intended to replace the original Suswave. The two were initially identical outside of 2uswave's red eyes. But the clone rebelled from her original intent, helping the players save Suswave and deal with their other copies: a program designed by Sus to run the forum game (Sus.wav), and the true villain (SuswAIve), a rogue AI wanting to scrape Famiboards and its members to power its own AI powered clone of the forum. Sus was being used as a human battery by the AI, and 2uswave would lead the charge in the final battle against it.

Over the course of the game, I was the player who interacted with 2uswave the most, and my "character" and her developed a kinship. And much of that was on Sus for making 2uswave a compelling and relatable character for me (in more ways than one, oops 🏳️‍⚧️). She was someone who was finally choosing agency from a predestined fate, overcoming feeling unsure and lost and afraid, making something for herself and building her own identity. She dyed her hair, she defined her gender identity in a different direction from Suswave, she made plans to do more self discovery after we saved Suswave!

But things couldn't end happily. To free Suswave from SuswAIve's control and prevent their death, she gave up her life and her body to restore the portions that were too damaged to survive. So in-universe, Suswave and 2uswave's looks effectively fused together - the badge I have on that looks like Suswave's avatar is that very look. But Suswave hides it by dying their hair and wearing a contact lens.

At the end of the last game, we all mourned 2uswave, then we all went our separate ways. It's been about 6 months since then, and Volcanic and Suswave took very different paths to cope (exploring the world versus hiding it away), neither fully healed, and now things are getting messy.

...of course, the "malice and bitterness" stuff is just storytelling. @Suswave and I are good friends! We're having fun pushing the stories of these fictional versions of ourselves and exploring the themes of the different games.

Another song that got stuck in my head, today.

...but to very loosely recap the 2uswave storyline: [recap]
Got it, I was wondering about the period of time Suswave’s avatar had heterochromia and then didn’t.

The recap reminds me of days of my yonder when I was very into forum roleplaying and other worldbuilding (alas I’m a mix of ‘too old’ / busier / not quite as creatively inclined as my past self).

ProZD is a gem and so are the series’ courtroom antics.
