Is Autism Speaks a good organization in 2023 or should I avoid them? @curl-6

(For the reocrd, I found out recently that I'm autistic.)

What should I look for when it comes to autistic support services?

Edit: A lot of my friends say that Autism Speaks is anti-autism and anti-autistic people.
Autism Speaks is a definite "do not associate". The only Autistic member of the leadership decided to resign because even he didn't feel listened to, which should say everything that needs to be said.

Now that Persona 5 and Nier Automata are on Switch it's time for some new white whales I guess. MGS collection and Persona 3 remake.
Yakuza remastered collection still remains as the biggest white whale for Switch. There's no reason for them not to be on Switch, so the devs make up new ones.

That's not good at all.

Damn.

And my psychiatrist may have recommended me to them which I why I was wondering.

I know many autistic friends and they don't trust AS.

My psychiatrist may have been the one to recommend them off-hand or she just mentioned them.
Just like MSnap says below, their messaging almost seems confusing by design because I think they're a lot like PETA, on the surface the message is inherently innocent enough ("hey, let's not eat meat and contribute to the suffering of animals", "hey, autistic people need support too", etc.), but scratching beyond the surface and into financial records, speaking with people negatively impacted by these organizations and receiving "help" they never asked for, etc., they're really shady organizations that are doing actively more harm than any good they purport

I’ve heard this, but this was after I went to a benefit concert from them in like 2013 hosted by Jack Black. The concert was great and it seemed like the performers genuinely wanted to help get autistic kids the help they needed. (Except Neil Young for some reason seemed to blame autism on Monsanto lol.)

Maybe they’re really good at hiding their true goals or something, but the messaging has always been confusing to me.
And like I said above, the intentional obfuscation of their messaging is so they get celebrity endorsements to strengthen their brand. By all rights I don't hold it against Jack Black as I'm sure he still feels strongly to help out people with autism, but I wouldn't be surprised that if he had the time to go through all the research and peer reviewed journalistc articles speaking against AS he'd feel deceived by their marketing team that led him to perform on stage for the benefit concert.

Granted, I'm not sure what Neil Young was going on about, but then everything I've heard about his live concerts seems...mildly unhinged senile ramblings at best? Like, fantastic songwriter and definitely has his heart in the right place...but I know a friend who also left a concert thoroughly irritated and disappointed because Young refused to play any of his older songs that made him popular in the first place and just the new songs.

Going on a further tangent, I'm surprised Paul McCartney still goes to bat for PETA as much as he does; I understand being a vegan is important to him but given PETA themselves will steal people's pets from front porches and send them to kill shelters if they're not adopted within seven days makes their message about respecting animals seems hypocritical at best.

I’m baffled and annoyed Nintendo didn’t bring this collection back with the Mario Movie.
That would've been a pretty good idea! I wonder how much it would impact sales of SM3DAS? + 3/4 million maybe?
Fellas, guess what? I'm trying out BotW again. This is the 3rd time I've bought this game. This time, I'm going to play it slow and with a walkthrough. I think it's the only way I'll be able to enjoy it/have it click. I have ADHD so I get distracted super easily. A guide will hopefully help me complete the majority of what's available to do in the game and keep me focused.

Also upgraded my NSO to include GBA games. God, Superstar Saga is SO FUCKING GOOD!!!
They should've remade it for the Switch. It already worked on one screen back on the GBA. It could have saved AlphaDream...

His performance was good. It was more of an off the cuff “you ever notice how autism diagnoses are going up since Monsanto (I can’t even remember.)” The encore was Rockin’ in the Free World with all the other performers. Though other than Stephen Stills and White Buffalo, I can’t really remember who was there lol

Interesting, my friend went to see Young in 2017 or 2018, I think? Said he didn't play Heart of Gold, Rockin In The Free World, or Harvest Moon, so that's a strange turn around on setlist design only a few years later.

But also extreme side eye at the Monsanto comment lol

thanks.

I'll be careful.

If you could get me any advice on autism support services outside of "Autism Speaks" in my area, that would be much appreciated. @curl-6

I’m just glad I got to see him live before he inevitably passes away. All accounts I’ve heard describe him as a grumpy old man these days so your buddy’s anecdote sounds about right.

Always rubbed me the wrong way and felt like they approached things as it being treatable or that with enough effort autistic people can be “normal”. I’m autistic, I’ve never trusted them as an org.

I understand.

I'm getting my psych eval for autism as a formal diagnosis soon next month. It's to make things more official, though everyone expects me to be "autistic" by the end of it all (the psych eval). And I'm getting an eval for OCD, Bipolar, etc.

Overall, I recently overtook a med that I need that helps me get through the day and now I'm waiting till very early June to get the med back. I'm doing fine, but it's not fun. I have a plan with someone else to have them administer it to me soon when I get my next refill.

In the meantime, we've been informed that we can see "autism support services."

For sure. I saw Gordon Lightfoot back in 2019, and a part of me chuckled good naturedly that when he came back for the second set of his show, he was in loafers and a cardigan like he was ready to go to bed immediately after the show concluded haha

Hit just as hard when I learned he passed away earlier this month at 84.

My mom took me to see a specialist to evaluate me when I was like 9 or 10, but the guy ended up only testing me for ADHD, which we already knew I had. So we never really got a concrete answer, but I’m reasonably sure I’m somewhere on the spectrum.

Crank 1&2 might be the dumbest movies I’ve ever seen but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy them.
Ah yes, what happens if one decides to make a movie so gratuitous it makes the concept of gratuitousness blush... and then make the previous movie blush.

Also watch Happy!

I just had a thought

With Nintendo of America's marketing insisting on the terminology "the x game", what if every future Nintendo movie title is "The x Movie" like The Super Mario Bros. Movie is?

The Donkey Kong Movie
The Legend of Zelda Movie
The Metroid Movie

Got some games - despite fully invested in Zelda...

Catherine and DQXI are used but got them at a pretty good price. I've owned DQ before but it didnt click with me then so I sold it. But it's a game that really should click with me and I want it in my collection so I got it. Catherine is one of those games that basically never shows up and is OoP so when it showed up I couldnt help myself.

The others are new and should be played in between Zelda and Pikmin during the summer.. Trinity Trigger I will play with the wife as we're both big Mana series fans.

Dragon Quest IX is a great game. It took a bit before it hit it's stride, but I really enjoyed it.

Catherine is cool, conceptually. I really like the idea of the game where a guy in his late twenties/early thirties just can't deal with the life changing issues and that he tries to run away... but they come back to haunt them. Can't say much about the added content in Full Body, but I did dislike how the game shits on Erica.

oop Nintendo issued a DMCA strike against the Dolphin Emulator listing for Steam.

I hope this doesn't put Nintendo's attention on the other emulators that are on steam

Edit: A lot of my friends say that Autism Speaks is anti-autism and anti-autistic people.
To echo what others have said, Autism Speaks is viewed very unfavourably by autistics because it very much pushes the angle that people like us are defective and broken, and ignores the wishes of the community.

If you're looking for good organizations that provide support, the best way to tell is usually how they talk about autism, (if they talk about curing it that's a big red flag, but if they talk about enabling the individual or use positive language and terminology like neurodiversity that's a good sign) and how much they include autistic people in their own ranks.

I hope that finding out you're autistic brings you self-acceptance and happiness; it may not happen all at once, it took a few years for me, but in the end it was a vital step on my journey; I wish you the same. :)

I hope it’s 8/16 bit style but know it will be like treasures or something. Also, give us a new rocket slime!
Given SE heavy use of Unreal, I would not be surprised if its looks like Treasures (which was ok).

I haven't played rocket slime, but everyone I know who has, loves it lol.

The fact that the question about Switch ports doesn't pop up in RGG-related interviews anymore is pretty damning; at this point not even journalists can be arsed to deal with their bullshit.

Rocket Slime needs to come back into all of our lives. The world would be a better place with more Rocket Slime
No lies detected. Who cares about HD2D DQ3, give me Rocket Slime.

Look man, they want to stay underground, and they’ll accomplish that even if it means burying Yakuza in JP haha

Look man, they want to stay underground, and they’ll accomplish that even if it means burying Yakuza in JP haha
The stupidest part is that, apparently, behind all the "light and dark", "underground and daylight", "too violent and mature for Switch"... nonsense, the actual, real reason for the lack of Ryu Ga Gotoku games on Switch is... that Yakuza 1 & 2 HD flopped on Wii U and that PROVES that there isn't an audience for these games on Nintendo consoles. You can't make this shit up.

Forget the shrines and the main quest - Tears of the Kingdom's most addictive challenge is the challenge of trying to go viral.

I don't mean "trying to go viral" as in, trying to get likes, or pushing yourself towards internet clout. Especially on Twitter, which sucks and is dying. I mean the act of trying to make things that could go viral - the act of just try to piece together those kinds of clips that, given the right circumstances, could set the TotK fandom on fire.

I find myself very heavily invested in this right now. I just keep building and building, challenging myself over and over to push my imagination to absolute breaking point. Last night I was grinding - actually grinding - in a Zelda game. Wiping Flux Constructs off the map for Zonai charges to get new toys to play with, and putting on a podcast in the background to mine Zonaite pieces and maxing out my battery.

It is, in pure function and game progression, something that gets me absolutely nowhere. I've wasted all of my parts multiple times, hundreds of Zonaite gets invested in making vehicles and weapons that feels like they crash and burn 60% of the time, forcing me to start over. I've wasted so many arrows turning devices on and off from a distance, and so much weapons to get myself out of a pinch, should a situation backfire. (Which it so, so often does)

But the payoff is just incredible. Whenever I manage to make a device that makes for a fun clip, I feel so rewarded. Not with something that may or may not go viral, but by the joy the sheer process got me to. Not to mention the times that the game made me laugh my ass off, which happens almost equally often. The sheer flexibility of this game's physics and playground mentality and design is unparalleled. While I've spent in-game time looking at shrine count or heart rows to feel satisfaction about my progress, I've perhaps looked even more over my recorded clips and felt, not really pride, but something like that sense of accomplishment that you can only feel when you've made some dope stuff that is so genuinely yours.

Over time, I hope to see more people on this site dig in to the endless creative potential that this game has to offer. It's all so exciting.

Another saturday. And also yet another day I wish we had Digital Devil Saga I & II on Switch.

Also, even though the games aren't seen as classics or even good, I would love for SEGA to revisit Sands of Destruction and Sting Hexyz Force. I really love those games!

And now, six years of data later about how Switch and its catalog are selling like hotcakes, that’s still the proof they’re pointing to? Haha.

we talking yakuza on switch in here?

I think there’s a number of reasons it’s not happening. I don’t think Y1+2HD flopping on Wii U is that big of a factor: Sega/RGG isn’t stupid. They know the Wii U was a flop and the Switch is, frankly, the only console in their home country of Japan that’s ever really on the weekly sales charts. I also don’t really buy the “Yakuza is for adults and the Switch is for lil babies” argument they peddle, especially because the latest time they rolled that excuse out was literally a week or two before the release of the Sega-produced M-Rated Switch game Bayonetta 3.

I honestly think the two biggest reasons for it are as follows:

1) porting the games to the ARM-based Switch, even if they offloaded the bulk of the work to an port-house like Panic Button or Virtuous, would take up a lot of their resources, even in an advisory/supervisory capacity, which are already fully booked right now with at least two games in development right now (Gaiden and 8, that we know of)

2) While the pre-Dragon Engine games seem like slam-dunk ports that would be relatively simple, the Dragon Engine is another beast entirely as it struggled on base PS4 consoles. It got better as time went on (Kiwami 2 and Judgment ran better than 6) but they were still pushing the console pretty far. I bring this up because the Yakuza franchise has a big narrative component, and with 2, 6 and 7 only being in the modern, resource-hungry Dragon Engine that would bring the Switch to its knees, they’re probably not interested in giving the console an ultimately incomplete experience. Maybe once the new hardware is out, they’ll revisit the idea of ports, but for now, I think they’d rather just focus on making the games for the other platforms. Once they can give Switch players the complete franchise, I genuinely do think they’re going to start porting the franchise to Switch (2) at a rapid pace.

I think we’ll have a better chance to see that on the Switch 2, I’d love for Yakuza games to be on Switch obviously but I assume part of the reason they don’t put them there is because Kiwami 2 would be a difficult port and I’d be weird to have 0, Kiwami, 3, 4, 5, but not Kiwami 2.

(Yes, I'm trying to make sense of SEGA's porting decisions, I'm a fool)

They're not coming to any Nintendo platform unless Nintendo pays for everything, including the publishing duties. Team Yakuza not doing this for free after Uncle Phil paid big monies for them.

Nintendo won’t have to pay them. If they want to maintain sales relevance in Japan, they’re going to need to be on Switch/Switch 2.

I don’t think Y1+2HD flopping on Wii U is that big of a factor
Liam Robertson once said here in Famiboards that it was the main reason
The reason why it hasn't happened (and I know this is stupid) is because Nintendo begged them to put Yakuza on Wii U back in the day. They went through the trouble of doing it and then it flopped massively, so I think they have doubts about there being an audience for Yakuza on Nintendo platforms.
And this was from a thread from a year ago. If they believed this in 2022, I don't think anything happened since then to change their mind.

Incidentally, @LiamRobertson, if I fucked up and that wasn't fact but personal opinion or something to that effect, please tell me and I'll edit this out.

You guys are falling in the same trap Square Enix fell with the Kingdom Hearts series;

"Oh, we can't get KHIII to run on Switch on a budget", then proceeds to dump every other game as cloud versions, even though those could work natively no problem;

Honestly, I believe they could even get KHIII scaled down if they truly tried; but that's definitely wasn't within their budget or deadline with Sora coming to Smash;

I'm sure people would be perfectly satisfied with just the titles that are reasonably feasible on the Switch; say.. like Capcom with the Devil May Cry series (though, DMC4 and DmC have yet to appear..); no one is asking for DMCV, I don't think?

SEGA is just a very confusing company;

I absolutely LOVE the gameplay I've seen from FFXVI. It's the game that really makes me want a PS5 eventually.

I do trust Liam, he knows his stuff, but I can’t imagine that’s the ONLY reason, you know? Like I’m sure it’s A factor, but THE factor?

SEGA is just a very confusing company;

I get what you’re saying but again, there’s a strong narrative through-line from Yakuza 0-6. Missing 2 would be a huge narrative omission, and 6 is literally the end of Kiryu’s saga. It’s not like DMC where you get 1-3 but not 4 or 5, it’s like if you got DMC 1, 3 and 4 but not 2 or 5.

(I’ve never played DMC, I have no idea if there’s a continuing story between games, but I assume there is. I’m also pretending 5 is the definitive end to Dante’s story to make this comparison work.)

If omitting games was an option, I could see them only doing 0 and Kiwami. But those games are regularly like $5 on other platforms, so would people buy them on Switch at a price that would make that port work make financial sense, when they could get ‘em on Steam or PS or Xbox for like $10 tops? I mean, I certainly would, but I can’t imagine there are many like me.

And with the games being action games with tight timing windows, cloud versions wouldn’t be the best experience. I did play 0 through Xbox Cloud and it wasn’t bad but I definitely didn’t enjoy it as much as I do playing it on a local machine, especially the karaoke mini game.

I could see them putting the turn-based 7/LaD on Switch via Cloud, tbh. Maybe that’ll show up at some point and I’ll finally buy a cloud-based Switch game.

but that's definitely wasn't within their budget
Yeah, that's the whole problem about Yakuza and KH on Switch. Money. Once you get paid for doing something, you'd never do it free again. KH licensing costs are notoriously high and both Phil and Tim paid all that (and gave Tim the right of keeping them away from Steam). But KH is at home on Nintendo, why doesn't Square do it themselves? Yes KH still has the potential to print money on Switch but, you know, they still want that port money from Nintendo on top of that. They probably have other plans for older KH tithes for the future, but for now, anyone who wants the current versions has to pay for them. KH most definitely will return to Nintendo in the future with the problematic parts cut out.

Sega is a mysterious beast on its own but they already have few deals going on between them and Nintendo right now, like Bayo license and Sonic vs Mario Olympics thing. It's the RGG studio who's been stubborn about this. If it was completely up to upper Sega management, Yakuza on Switch would have been a thing long ago, perhaps within the first year of Switch. Nagoshi's departure hasn't changed a thing and whatever he wanted in exchange of the ports, the studio still wants it.
