StarTopic Nintendo General Discussion |ST19 April 2023| A tradition unlike any other

I think there's an argument to be made about the stagnation of the whole AAA landscape, but aiming that critique solely towards Nintendo on a Playstation focused site is funny.
Yeah, there's an element of conservatism across the bigger publishers for sure.

I do think there's a contrast to be made between Nintendo's Switch output across 2017 to 2019, and then across 2020 to 2023, in that the range of new IP has really slowed down, but that's not the argument the article really makes and it settles on some lazy ideas; such as Pikmin 4 looking "identical" to Pikmin 3; maybe it does at a cursory glance, but considering the perspective and mechanical changes on display in the second trailer and it's not an idea that holds up. I also think it's lazy and inaccurate to suggest that Nintendo leaning on spin-offs and re-releases is some new phenomenon, and it's a generalisation to suggest all that stuff is lazy or uninspired. It's as if people forget the mediocre spin-offs of 2015 and 2016 happened.

But then even if there's been a noticeable slowdown in new IP from Nintendo, I don't think it's fair or accurate to suggest they haven't done anything interesting or new with existing IP. Franchises like Pokemon and Kirby, for example, got major new ideas last year, and franchises as seemingly dead and obscure as Detective Club and Advance Wars have featured. The picture's always more complex than a handful of long-running tropes.

I ALWAYS believe that everyone shall be entitled to their opinion and the way they express it.

That said: I wish I could earn some quick and easy money just like that.
I do think that there’s a huge difference in the framing between the text in the link, ‘Nintendo games are boring’, and the headline on the article, ‘ Sorry, Nintendo, Your Games Just Don't Excite Me Any More’. The former just reads as a sweeping attempt at platform wars, the latter is just a reasonable summary of the opinion piece.

Regarding the latter, to each their own. I feel like it’s something that can be thrown at the AAA publishers in general though.

Even a « Sorry, [publisher], your games just don’t excite me anymore » would be a pretty dumb take, or one that would say more about the person who wrote it than it says about the output of said publisher. Even like Ubisoft releases a good game once in a while

I believe they updated the domestic prediction, it's around $205m now. It goes up every day. IIRC Lion King 2019 had a $400m + opening weekend, which this won't reach.
According to Wikipedia, Lion King only hit 245m worldwide, which Mario has likely already beaten. The previous record holder internationally was Frozen 2

Wow. Expected Mario to be popular, but not “more popular than Disney” popular. Miyamoto (and Nintendo) has gotta be super happy with that.
I seem to recall during the 90s Mario was deemed more recognizable than Mickey Mouse based on a survey of the youth, so I’d believe this.

The subheadline is "it's not me, it's you", if it was chosen by the writer and not an editor/the website it reads to me as the person trying to frame it as an objective view of the publisher and not just their own opinion on its games.

Think about it. Characters invented for videogames are now as popular as the most popular Characters in the world.

I love it. 😀

Apparently that's a big reason why Square wanted to use Disney characters for Kingdom Hearts, because they were thinking about making a 3D action game in the vein of Mario 64 and they lamented not having characters of their own that could rival Mario in terms of stardom.

Huh, I had no idea
Have no idea, just saw this and found it funny, also because there are some members here that really loves the Yakuza series.
I love Like a Dragon, but I do not believe those characters behave like normal Yakuza at all.

I’m happy that the profits from the Mario film will lead to the greenit of Pokémon Colosseum remake/remaster and Fire Emblem radiant duology

(Let me dream)

I still need to see the Mario movie. I am..not sure what my plan will be. I know my wife isn’t interested in it - she didn’t / doesn’t play video games. I guess I would go alone but I don’t want to be next to a bunch of kids, lol. Maybe I’ll wait until I can watch it at home.

Even if your wife doesn't play video games, she could enjoy it, maybe make a deal with her so she can comes with you (exchange her company for a massage, a good meal, whatever), but also if you have to go see it by yourself, there's a lot of adults watching it, so you won't be the only one without kids, don't worry!

I’m seeing so many families lining up for The AMC theater here. Lots of kids with grand parents as well lot of them wearing Mario shirts and stuff as well. Guessing they’re are here for John wick 4

Gotta be.

I went by myself last night. It was later in the evening so it was mostly teenagers and older families. It was a good time!

And people say not everything has to be on Switch... hah!

Although apparently Nintendo paid a pretty penny back in the 90s for the rights to adapt The 7th Guest for the then in development SNES CD-ROM System, so this could be seen as the result of quite a long-term investment.

Today I learned that Final Fantasy The Spirit Within’s production budget was higher the The Mario Movie.

I need to watch that film one day.
If Super Mario Movie is a loving recreation of the games, Spirits Within is basically the exact opposite.

7th Guest! I guess every classic FMV game is making its way to Switch!

Except Zork The Grand Inquisitor. We need Zork The Grand Inquisitor on any modern platform, no game funnier than that was ever made! It could... oh wait. MS - AB acquisition. Zork is gonna go where gems like Midtown Madness and Rise of Nations gather dust....

First FEWTH route down! Scarlet Blaze(save). Managed a mix of A’s/S’s. Enjoyed attacking and dethroning the remnants of the old gods probably will do another game before starting my next route, not sure which I’m going with. Maybe Claude(kill).

Because I'm expecting Nintendo to be a little quiet until they're finally ready to talk about Switch 2, I wasn't really looking forward to Nintendo's next investor meeting. However, now with the Mario movie's performance, I'm really looking forward to seeing their comments on their film initiative. I don't know if they'll hold off on making more formal and elaborate comments until Q1 results, but I imagine we'll hear something, either in the presentation or in the Q&A, when they talk about Q4 and FY23.

So Obviously the setup for a dk movie would open on a horrible accident in Brooklyn after a failed attempt by DK to court mayor Pauline, he is banished and returned to Kong Kingdom. Depressed he finds a strange fellow while out drowning himself in bananas, only to find himself tricked into opening the banana reserve by none other than K Rool. Pissed off and framed, he finds his fanboy Diddy is the only one who believes he's innocent and they head out for revenge and to reclaim the bananas

Good evening Fami, hope you all are having a brilliant day : )

I usually don’t do this, as I don’t like attention. And I hope even after this we will focus on the game, not me.

As some of you know, I do hobby journalism behind the scenes and research various things for fun. Some accurate Nintendo rumors that were reported by YouTubers and other sites in the past partially were based on my research. As I said, I don’t like attention and thus always asked everyone to keep me private, which I intend to continue remain private in those stories.

However, now I have something super exciting that I’m aware of. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door Remaster is finally happening and coming out soon!

I have been in touch with 3 sources with this. One of them redirected to me to the third source, who I hadn’t interacted with before so it was just me cold messaging them on LinkedIn. Because this third source wouldn’t acknowledge the release date I had heard from the previous two sources, I’ll just leave it as “coming soon.”

I informed both @NintendoPrime and @NateDrake about this privately. There’s one more person I have informed, but they wish to remain anonymous.

I personally had always wished for TTYD remaster. I never played it on GCN so I’m over the moon excited to finally play it on Switch soon.

Should make some lunch and put on the new G-witch.

Then I need to decide if I’m starting Rhapsody or Nier Replicant…

real Genius move to delay the film into Easter Weekend in hindsight
IIRC it also coincides with the release anniversary for Mario Bros.

I haven’t seen it in over a decade. It’s not horrible, but they really should’ve dropped the FF branding from it just to keep expectations in check. It’s good for what it tries to do at a time. But a lot of people went in expecting chocobos and moogles and it ain’t that at all. And after seeing how Advent Children turned out I think that was 110% the right call. Just… they should’ve called it “Spirits Within” and left it at that.

Ok Hell's Paradise, you have me intrigued. I like the creepy flower imagery. Every character seems at least a little unhinged. Pretty gory. Nice soundtrack so far. I'll keep watching.

This deserves its own thread

Fun fact: the company behind the creation of this Darkest Dungeon-looking melon farmer is... an online Casino.

"pls guys, don't waste too much time gaming; think of the consequences! You could ruin your future! :( NOW, WHO WANTS TO FLUSH THEIR LIFE SAVINGS AWAY AT THE SLOT MACHINES? :D"

It's hard to believe now, but that movie passed for photorealistic back then. As a kid I spent half the movie internally unsure if it was CG or live-action.

Wanted to see the Mario movie with my fam and siblings but the closest cinema was closed for improvements on the day of release...

I'm playing MH Rise on Switch, it's a great Mon Hun game, better than World in a lot of things, but I was curious about the Series X version so I installed it (Gamepass) and omg.

What a change, 60 fps, ultra sharp textures, so much better than the Switch version... but it still screams it's a Switch game, and that's a problem, but really interesting.
Why does it still feel like a Switch game even when playing on Series X with great perfomance? The answer, in my opinion, is both the amount of detail (wind, vegetation, light, spawn of monsters...) and the fact that game design changes when targeting a less powerful device.
Don't forget that the most famous "magical port" (The Witcher 3) is an 8 year-old game.
I think Monster Hunter Rise is the perfect example of why it's time for Switch 2.

I hope the next Monster Hunter game is not a Switch version ported to modern consoles, even if I love Rise.

Just finished Life is Strange 2, I think I got a somewhat good ending, or at least one that felt satisfying to me

Sean going to Mexico and living there with Cassidy while Daniel surrenders

but boy, it made me cry so much. Also the game was struggling at times on the Switch (mostly in terms of details and lighting), but I’m really glad SE released it there, it’s the kinda game I never would’ve finished on a home console.

Watched the Mario movie. It was a lot of fun.

Definitely enjoyed it more than Grace.

Just pre-ordered the Zelda OLED on Amazon (and got a standard Pro Controller also). I have been going back and forth for a few weeks now if I was going to make the move as we know new hardware will probably arrive in 2024ish... but I need Zelda and Metroid Prime Remastered and Pikmin.

Haven't had a Switch since mid 2019 (last game I got was Link's Awakening) as my Switch died. Time to research on what I missed in 2020, 2021 and 2022, any suggestions would help :)

Debating if I should sign up for a month of NSO to buy the vouchers before Zelda, no idea when those will end. I somehow still have $129.80 in my Nintendo Wallet lol
