Hm, Just trying to figure out if there's anything else I want before I leave internet again. Grabbed Blaster Master Zero 3, the bass fishing, cat quest 2, Monster Hunter Stories 2(didnt download, have plenty of jrpgs to work on), Gato Roboto and Guacamelee…. In hindsight I'm probably good and can hang onto that Eshop credit for P3 and surprise Nintendo spring releases.

Neogeo pocket color selection 2 is on sale, but I'm kinda considering waiting for it to drop to 50% off like the original since it got discounted way sooner

Slightly tempted by some of the Shantae games on sale but I do have other ways to play them

I got Dusk '82 as a purchase bonus for Dusk, didn't realise it wasn't released as a standalone game yet 🤔

Just your traditional January. One big first party games, few other third party stuff.

My buy list:
Risen
Persona 4 Golden
Persona 3 Portable
SpongeBob Cosmic Shake
Fire Emblem Engage

I'll probably shelf the persona games after a few hours into them, as I previously have beaten them few times. Risen, however, will be my first time. I'm quite unfamiliar to the GRPG genre, pretty excited.

Looking forward to Fire Emblem.

Three Houses was the first Fire Emblem game I played and I had only recently started getting into strategy games at that time. I really enjoyed Triangle Strategy last year and all the gameplay I've seen for Engage looks like they are giving you a lot of fun mechanics to work with.

Just in for Fire Emblem, I don't think there's much in the first two months for me at this time. That's okay though since I'm going to try to clean up some of this backlog stuff.

Happy New Year, everyone. I'm two chapters into that rhythm game Melatonin that came out last week. I highly recommend it, it's so fun, interesting and the music is real good.

And because of backlog and stuff having P4G + P3 releases would have been the most amazing thing, I mean it still is, but it will have to wait til a few months before I play them.

Woah, didn't even know Dusk '82 was getting (or already got?) a Switch release. I enjoyed the main game on PC but wasn't really interested in playing a Boxxle game at my desk lol. I noticed Iron Lung was released on the eShop a week or so ago as well, fans of Dave Szymanski living good on Switch.

Thanks as always @Joedev and all you wonderful folks who provide your impressions. I ended up nabbing both Shovel Knight spin-offs (Pocket Dungeon and Dig) and There is No Game: Wrong Dimension before the sale ends. Hoping Sonic Origins shows up in the NA New Year's Sale as I'm eager to give the series a red hot go.

We tried the Pompom: The Great Space Rescue demo, too, and decided it's not for us. My spouse described it as like playing a Mario Maker level as yours building it and I could really see that. It's different from an auto runner like Wunderling in that you have no direct control over the jumps, and it's a little bit like the Rayman Legends Murfy levels or NSMBU Boost Mode but not to the degree I'd hoped. I think it's mainly the pacing that makes it different from those two games. Whereas you're placing blocks in a tensely timed environment in those two, in this it's a bit more puzzle-oriented so the goal is to slow down time and place the blocks strategically, and the action moves at a fairly slow pace when time is not frozen. I think it appears cleverly designed and creative, just a bit slow paced for our 2D platforming tastes.

Happy New Year! Thanks for another great thread 😊

Nothing much for me this month, but I may snag a few games before the sale ends.

I'm wondering if anyone has played Garden Story and has any thoughts they could share?

Yeah Ive played a few hours and it’s cute!
It has some 2D Zelda vibes but basically the world has these 4 towns based on the seasons and the areas around them to explore. The NPCs are adorable veggies and fruits. You will do quests for people and there’s crafting you will be doing - each town has a notice board with daily quests to complete with the goal to raise the town level.

There’s combat too which seems fine. Music is catchy. It’s a solid game I haven’t been blown away by it but I’ll definitely be playing some more :)

Thanks very much for your impressions, that's really helpful! It sounds a fun one to play with my kids 😊

This Christmas we've had a wonderful time with Lil Gator Game - I highly recommend it. One of the best Indies I played all year ⭐

Has anyone played Phoenotopia: Awakening?

Critics seem mixed about this one, but it might be my cup of tea.

Also, UnderMine is a blast. It doesn't reinvent the roguelike genre, but it does almost everything good. I highly recommend it to all roguelike fans, at least when it's on sale. I bought it recently at less than 6€, it normally is 18.

Phoenotopia Awakening is awesome. Also it has a brilliant soundtrack.

The difficulty was too much for me so I dialed it back.

Fully agreed on Undermine - an excellent and underrated roguelike with a very addictive loop👍

I also enjoyed my time with Phoenitopia: Awakening, although I haven't finished it.

Looking forward to Fire Emblem. Vengeful Guardian is one I really want to see reviews of but I’m intrigued.

Nothing is really feeling like a "must buy now" for me which is cool, I've got plenty of games to get through as it is. I'll get Persona 3 and 4 eventually for sure, but I'm not in a rush.

Not sure if I’m ready to bite just yet tho. Quite a few things on my wishlist for sale tho. New low for Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 at $12 so tempted after loving the first game.
Other things on my list tempting me I’d be open to thoughts on:
Lumines remastered at $4.50
Kloana remastered at $24
Dusk Diver at $3.50
Monster Train first class at $15

New sale and I can’t decide if it’s a good time to buy Tunic or better wait for other sales considering I have a huge backlog lmao

Mr Driller Drill Land and Katamri Damacy are also on sale for 4 bucks.
Slipstream too is on sale (for whoever like racing games like Outrun).

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider is the indie I’m waiting on this month (and really, the only game I have on my radar sadly). It had a solid demo, so I’m looking forward to the full thing. Next month is the month I’m waiting tbh.

Damn this is why I like this thread, hadn't even heard of this game and looked it up, looks awesome. My wallet doesn't like this thread though, lol

YS 8 Sale is tempting, I been in dabbling in action RPGs recently but none have truly won me over. I went back to Ni No Kuni 2 and that game is eh. I do like my playthrough of Vesperia so far but I wonder if YS will be the action one to really hit me.

Nothing this month for me, I want SpongeBob but I'll wait until they patch a LATAM Spanish dub in the game. Don't think I'll get a main FE this generation.

Looks Hagane as fuck.

During the sale, I picked up Revita and have been absolutely hooked on it.

It's a really great twin stick shooter platformer roguelike with an interesting mechanic where your health is the primary currency. Lots of Risk/Reward decisions around spending health/max health to gain relics and upgrades. It has all of the staples you would expect from a roguelike - bunch of stuff to unlock, meta progression, daily/weekly runs, incremental difficulty system, ton of secrets, but what it really does great is continually introduce new elements and mechanics to the player. It has a similar feel to Hades, where even after a failed run, there's plenty of stuff to do and I'm excited to jump right back in.

Has great pixel art and enjoyable music, along with a bunch of accessibility options that include the ability to control the game speed and enemy damage, if you find that it's too difficult by default.

There is also a very large 2.0 update that is in progress that is reworking and adding a ton.

I would highly recommend it and it's really scratching that one more run itch for me.

I grabbed Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition. Looks really great on the Switch! The battle system is a little chonkier than I remember, but it's a solid JRPG I'm having a good time with. Not sure I'll be investing the full time in it to finish it with some big new releases on the horizon but it's working to kill the time until then.

Great write up Joe.

One of my favourite roguelites on Switch, definitely one of the most underrated imo.

The other day I picked up Citizen Sleeper on a 30% discount. It's absolutely fantastic.

Also got Subsurface Circular, Golf Zero, and Zombie Rollerz: Pinball Heroes, which is a pinball roguelite that got mixed reviews but I was interested in the concept and after seeing it marked down to $5, I bit.

Can you play Return to Monkey Island without having played any of the older games? I saw it was on sale. I really enjoy point and click adventures, but just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be totally lost.

You can. But you get more out of it of you have played the other games. If you can play them you should either way. But I think I can recommend Return even if you haven't played those. Very good game.

You'll not get lost. It's perfectly fine to be played on its own. However, be sure to NOT play it on "casual" (or whatever the setting is called), otherwise IMO the game becomes too trivial at places.

I wish they'd release the older games on Switch.
Ron said he'll look into that on twitter. 1-2 re-releasing shouldn't be that hard, the games completely owned by Disney. 3 and 4 need to be remade, they aged horrbily. Both need a full HD makeover. 5... The way Skunkape bringing back older Telltale games may indicate ToMI could be the next one after Sam & Max 3. We might see it on Switch first.

Woah, that's actually really cool. I played Monkey Island 1 during the covid doldrums and thought it was really good and quite funny. I picked up 2 on a Steam sale but never properly dug into it and avoided Returns since I wasn't caught up. I would probably pickup both on Switch assuming they were fairly cheap.

"Never pay more than 20 bucks for a computer game" and all that.

Appreciate the responses :) I think I'll give it a shot, seems like a nice game to play in between the longer games I'll play during the start of the year (FE Engage and Octopath 2).

Picked up Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider (what a word salad of a name), the new game from JoyMasher. It’s good, though honestly nothing great. It apparently takes after Shinobi, a game I never tried because it looks stiff and - surprise - this game is a bit stiff. It also has a bit of the Mega Man issue where it’s sometimes easier to just tank hits and spam the opponent with attacks. Not really the ninja fantasy I envisioned.

Despite not really loving Cyber Shadow either I think I prefer how that game feels at a base level. Still need to play more of this one though. It took me some time to warm up to Blazing Chrome.

Little Inferno DLC has landed on Switch and guess what ? The Switch icon of the game have been updated and finally features the logo and a better picture ^^.

Took them 6 years.

Celeste is on sale for a mere $3.98 USD, its lowest price ever. If you ever thought about jumping in but you wondered if it was too difficult or maybe you're not much into platformers and not sure if you'd like it, I implore you to give it a shot if you have any interest in it. It's one of my favorite games of all time and has incredible level design, pixel-perfect platforming, a compelling story and characters, and masterful OST.
