“Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with your household,” Netflix says in an email to U.S. customers, which it included in a blog post (see the email below). To share Netflix with someone outside of your household, you can transfer a profile to a new membership that someone else pays for, or you can buy an extra member for $7.99/month in addition the cost of the main subscription.

My father-in-law has most of the big streaming services and shares them with my wife and the rest of her family. He mentioned wanting to drop Netflix some time ago, but my wife wanted to keep it for Stranger Things, and while that's been stalled, she's mostly been watching Disney. Don't know what her siblings or mom think of Netflix, but it wouldn't surprise me if that gets dropped once this starts getting enforced.

We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is part of your Netflix Household.

We do not collect GPS data to try to determine the precise physical location of your devices.

From the main place you watch Netflix, connect to the internet and open the Netflix app on your mobile device(s) once a month. Then take the same steps when you arrive at your second location to continue watching Netflix without interruption.

My understanding is that it sorta works now with how Nintendo enforces NSO retro apps; they'll perform an online check every 30 days or so to see if you're still subscribed.

That's why I was saying earlier I'll just connect my phone to my parents WiFi every month or so when I visit and I can just cast to my TV to get around the restriction (at least that's my plan until they figure it out)

I don't know if it's still the case, but back when they first announced they were planning the change, the explanation (as far as I understood it) was that it would be IP-based, and that you would need to get a one-time login token (via... email I think?) that would clear that device as "yes it's me and I'm not home right now" for a certain number of days. You could do this for up to 30 days, after which that device would be locked out of your account until you brought it back to whatever location is set as your home IP.

So... yeah, way worse experience for any remaining paying customers who weren't sharing in the first place, which is a great move when they're already bleeding subscribers as a result of increasing sub prices and worsening catalogue haha.

This whole thing seems like a disaster and will just result in false positives penalizing paying customers.

That said if this works out financially for Netflix expect every single other streaming service (Disney plus, paramount plus, etc) to implement the exact same thing.

My son IS in my household. I’m just sending him to college. It’s cool though. I dropped it around the time this first leaked. Apple One + Disney Plus + Max + Prime has enough content for me.

I refuse to pay more for a worse service as the paying customer that would be the one still subbing.
