Music My Chemical Romance Returns with “The Foundations of Decay” (And an overall MCR Appreciation Thread)

One of my all-time favorites has returned with a 6-minute epic called The Foundations of Decay. I also learned they’re apparently working on a new album entirely. I was very hesitant on them making new music, but while this isn’t my favorite track of theirs (I know what they’re going for but the vocals are a little too low in the mix for my liking), I think it’s solid with an awesome break. They don’t seem to have been overly influenced much by the current music landscape which I don’t mind

On the appreciation side, I really hope this band finally gets the appreciation they deserve. Their discography is amazing. So much respect for a band that puts out 3 killer albums and then stops. I know there were conditions around it but still. I’m stoked to see them in September.

The sound mixing on the song is a little iffy but I’m definitely into it. Trying to get tickets to see them this fall.

I was in my junior year in high school when The Black Parade came out. Admittedly I was into heavier stuff at the time (Slipknot, System of a Down, Static-X) the influence of that album on my age group can't be understated.

Is that shade directed at their debut or their fourth album? 😅
Maybe a little shade at I Brought You My Bullets, but no I love Danger Days. It may actually be their best album when all is said and done.

It also came out entirely too early. If it came out 2-3 years later with the comic book movie boom, it would've exploded more than it did.

I also love the Conventional Weapons songs. Wanna give those a shoutout, though I know people don't consider that a full album.

I can't participate in a thread by an OP who throws shade at Bullets.

Fuck, too late

Lol fair.

I like it, don’t get me wrong. “Vampires Will Never Hurt You” is a jam. But it’s very much the precursor to their full arc in my opinion.

Oh most definitely. It doesn't have the polish and consistency (in production or songwriting) that I love about Three Cheers.

Three Cheers is by far my favorite production of theirs. As much as I love the theatrical nature of Black Parade, and as much as their success from it is deserved, nothing they've done matches the polished, yet raw, energy of Three Cheers.

Wasn't a fan of Danger Days. I can't really provide any good criticism beyond that just didn't appeal to me. It felt more like an emulation of a sound or aesthetic rather than something from the heart.

"Foundations of Decay" is right up my alley, sounds like it would have come out pre-Three Cheers when they were still in the Bullets mindset.

For sure. Not sure if you ever listened to Gerard Way’s solo stuff but it sounds a lot like that, sonically. Gerard’s vocals are mixed in a very similar way. It’s like a mix of that, Bullets, and the cover songs Gerard and Ray did for Umbrella Academy. It’a a really solid mix of styles.

Wanna shout out the band on their EU leg of tour. They’ve been switching up setlists like crazy. Live debuts of a bunch of Conventional Weapons songs. Different openers and closers each night. Like a band that has truly mastered their catalog.

Fall Out Boy is my favorite band and I wish they did this. Aside from the fact that they basically only ever play singles, their set list is just so locked in, the show feels robotic as a result. I wish more bands did it like MCR.

I'm into the new single! I'm always hesitant abound bands coming back but, tbh, if they've waited this long surely they're back because they have some new ideas together and not because they feel like they've gotta make something. The mixing is new but I can definitely see what they're going for. Wonder if we'll get an overall more vibe-y album.

Yeah I was reeeeally nervous about them putting out new music, if only because look at what the other bands around them made to blend in with the times. but they literally dug their heels into the ground and put out a really atmospheric 6-minute song with a breakdown in it. I love it. Mixing even still is not entirely for me but I respect it too much to let it turn me off. I think the album will kinda be like this too.
