Discussion Multi-world randomizers are pretty rad

Pronouns
they/them
I looked around and couldn't find anyone else talking about these, so I hope it hasn't come up here before and I just missed it.

I assume most people here are familiar with randomizers - there's a lot out for a variety of games - but as of somewhat recently, there's been an additional layer to it available: multi-world randomizers. That is to say, randomizing multiple games at once, for playing in the weirdest form of co-op known to man (and with the right games, it's honestly closer to PvP). Since the worlds are linked, Player A picking up an item in Game A will have Player B in Game B receive an item they need in their playthrough. Some games also support something called death link, which kills both players when one dies, for extra difficulty.

It's honestly a ton of fun, and I recommend it heartily to anyone who wants to add some zest and/or replays to games they've previously enjoyed solo.

You can find all the information on how to set it up at archipelago.gg, and there's a growing list of games available (both native PC games and emulated console games), currently totaling 31, and including some forum-relevant Nintendo titles like:
  • Donkey Kong Country 3
  • A Link to the Past
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Pokemon Red/Blue
  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
I'm not going to have enough free time to set more up myself in the next few weeks, but I'd love to try some out at some point with some other people here! And if anyone decides to try it I hope you have a good time and I'd love to hear funny stories o/

I remember hearing about something that combined I think a LTTP and Super Metroid randomizer, but that was meant for one person. This seems like something that could be really cool, if you have a partner who's just as into it as you are.

Yeah! For anyone interested, you can find that one here, and there's also an entry on Archipelago's site that lets you play it with people on other games.

I haven't really had time to set up a multiworld with friends yet, but I've gotten to spectate part of some and you get some super fun nonsense in there. Having any person play VVVVVV with death link on (even if it's set to link only every 15 deaths) basically guarantees everyone else is constantly on a time limit before they inevitably die.

You can do multiworld SMZ3 as well. I was watching a 3 player multiworld a few weeks ago.

There's actually a term in multiworld races called BK mode. It's name as such as during one of the earliest 2v2 multiworld races one player was completely out of checks and had to wait on their partner to find items, so they said "I'm going to Burger King" and ran out to get food.

This is a cool concept that I want to investigate further.

AGDQ is hosting a Metroid Prime I & II multi-world randomizer run today. I'll be too busy to catch but will try to remember to post the video once it's up this weekend!
