StarTopic Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak |ST| What is a hunter? A miserable little pile of carts

the gameplay mechanic alterations are pretty cool, but disappointed by the monsters.
Chaotic was inevitable ever since we saw Gore and Shagaru in the game. Risen Teo and Kush just seem meh... The previous TU was so cool because Cham/Teo/Kush have always been seen as a trio, but Cham always seems to get neglected, so seeing him get a variant was so exciting! Then they just copy and pasted that module over to Teo and Kush, and eh... can't say I'm all too excited.
In saying that, I haven't played TU2 yet, and I probably wont play Sunbreak again until TU4, or even 5 release, so when I do get back into playing I'll have a tonne of new monsters, so this disappointing set doesn't really bother me in hindsight.

As for those plush layered weapons, just give them to us for free god damn it. I do think Capcom is being a little greedy by charging for those, they know they're going to be popular. they're already charging a shit tonne for (cosmetic) DLC add-ons, just throw us a bone and give us the one people actually want for free.

i quite like the anomaly quests as the difficulty slowly increases with them. 200 is a bit of a grind though…

I love Sunbreak and it’s still my GOTY but these updates are just not it. 3 monsters, 2 of which fight the exact same way as their base form for 75% of the fight, and another reskin in Chaotic Gore Magala. I miss Iceborn updates where we could get completely new monsters that weren’t reskins like Rajang, Safiijiva, Alatreon, and Fatalis. At least the quest rewards from events seem improved in this update, but I still wish some gave new weapons like the ones in World and Iceborne. Does anyone care about new gestures or titles?
100% agree. Post launch support for MH games has been on a decline since gen 5. We'll never get the same support as with MH4 and MHG.

And the post launch monsters are all disappointing. They're really fun, but we've been there. Wouldn't hurt for them to add new monsters. I'm not expecting MHGU amount of monsters, but this is too little.

And one of the biggest disappointments is how Capcom is going full mtx on this series. Hairstyles and voices is one thing, but all these layered gear should be included for free.

Oof. Anomaly rank 122 Flaming Espinas wiped out my team in seconds with its explosion move. Lessons learned!

Ahhh Espinas, my old Nemesis. Dunno why, but i both hate this thing and always have problems with it. This fucker is totally a side evolution of Rathalos, where the MonHun universe god thought "How about i create a total asshole?".

Definitely not looking forward to an anomaly one, after not looking forward to Flaming Espinas, after not looking forward to regular MR Espinas.

Man when he does that two step stomp you know the nuke is coming. 1st time it happened caught me off guard. I was like, what’s he doing? Then booom! Oblivion
Yeah he caught the team I was with against a wall with nowhere to run. We all were all too busy blocking, dodging or recovering, and by the time he was up on his hind legs getting ready to nuke us, we all only got as far as the edge of the explosion before we were all wiped near simultaneously. Hilarious really :D

Lol at least you all went to the other side together

See, this is why you always should have an Insect Glaive user in the team. We can use the weapon moves to bail out of dire situations!
I’m still a bit miffed that i can’t use Guard Up to just wait it out as a lancer like I do almost everything else, it goes straight through it. Quick evasions really aren’t what I’m good at!

Picked up an anomaly quest of a level 130 Gore Magala, with its random factor being a max of two hunters. That was fun, me and a stranger vs the thing in a battle that raged all over the jungle. Eventually had Crimson Glow Valstrax rock up as a wandering monster too, which was a cool change of pace to ride that for a bit!

I was on the train home yesterday and thought I’d try the same quest again with followers- interestingly, that restriction of ‘max 2 hunters’ doesn’t apply to followers if you make it a single player quest, so I took in Fugen and Fiorayne. At one point it was badly injured and went back to the temple to sleep. I ran up to it, about to wake it up with a stab to the face. And Fugen says ‘watch out for a change in behaviour’. I like to imagine my hunter looks at him and says ‘what, like waking up?’ :D

Had a literal beast of an anomaly quest last night. Level 185 Afflicted Rajang, plus an Apex Rathalos, plus a Crimson Glow Valstrax, kill all monsters. The team I was hunting with took 35 minutes and we were on our last cart for the last 20 minutes of it! We had 3 hunters come in, take a look at the objective and bail before the team settled in.

I thought I played a lot of MH with nearly 400 hours logged in Rise/Sunbreak. I just received a guild card (I presume they are a Japanese player by the characters) with 3980 hours… that’s like 166 24 days playing Monster Hunter Rise, or 498 8-hour days, a game that’s been out for 21 months…

Hunt Monsters. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. :D Some of the guild cards are really dedicated in a completionist sense- hundreds of hunts with every single weapon etc.

I think, new content and occasional anomaly hunting aside, I might be done.

My last award was to get 1000 MR kills/caps and that felt like it took forever. What a game, though. My favourite or second favourite monster hunter.

So I think I might start MHR (Base game) after I have finished Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Not got the Sunbreak add on but I won’t bother buying it as I’ll need to finish the base game anyway won’t I?

Quick question, with the improvements in Sunbreak, did they also add these into base MHR? Or is everything since Sunbreak released exclusive to having that add on?

There’s a mix of both- generally most of the big fixes and weapon rebalances apply to both, but a lot of it requires Sunbreak. Honestly there’s hundreds of hours of play in MHR so I wouldn’t worry about it, you’re also gonna be overloaded with downloadable items to help you etc too

Probably Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax and Velkhana for this update, plus the rest of the endgame monsters that need to he added into Anomaly Investigation rotation

glad they finally listened to feedback and stopped announcing these 2 weeks in advance haha
Looking forward to seeing it, even tho based on datamines I already know what’s to come but still looks good

Anyone else think more TUs after 5 are possible? It seems gen 6 is a ways off and that would be a good way to extend Sunbreak. Plus, the "update roadmap" wording on the announcement made me raise an eyebrow. What needs updating if there's only one update after this one?

Possibly, I certainly wouldn’t say no

Gen 6 was due out Q2, 2023. I feel we would’ve heard it by now if it was still set to release then. The fact it hasn’t makes me think it’s been delayed until 2024, and I could easily see them pumping out another TU or two in the meantime

Velkhana and Risen CG Valstrax look like good fights with fun gear, interested in new skills too.

Seems odd that that last title update was a massive slog in terms of increased anomaly rank cap and this one only increased it by +20?

Now THAT's more like it! The previous title updates were a bit underwhelming to me as they were all subspecies/variants, but Velkhana may just tempt me back to play the postgame!

For those playing on Switch, does it still have an active player base, or is the online dead or dying by now?
And am I able to fight monsters like Velkhana, Violet Mizutsune, Lucent Nargacuga, etc once I reach MR 10, or would I have to grind for dozens of hours passed the story's end to get to them?

Yeah you can fight all the new monsters at MR10, you just need to progress through the quests for them. The only monsters gated behind the anomaly grind are high-level anomaly variants.

There’s still a very active player base, quests still fill up quickly.

I thought this week’s event quest text was quite funny. Goss Harag is already an absolute unit, he’s literally a refrigerator on legs!

📜 EVENT QUEST x2 📜

1️⃣ The Artian Layered Armor set emerges! Defeat a Kushala Daora in "Shadow in the Sandstorm" to craft it.

2️⃣ An absolute UNIT of a Goss Harag awaits in "Advanced: Carnival Carnage." Head to the Infernal Springs and fight this abominable crown-sized lad. 👑

#Sunbreak

Started this last night (Switch) it looks great on the OLED screen, I like what I have played so far (only a couple of hours) but yeah, there sure is a lot to learn

One question, in the Buddy Plaza, what is the advantage of hiring another Buddy? Do they come with you on quests along with your Dog/Cat combo you already have?

Also, can you still play those quests where you get gear based on other Capcom IP?

Ok, so if you’re playing solo, you can take up to two buddies.
If you play online, you bring one with you.

The reason you have more is that you can send them off to shop for items for you later on. You can also send them off as meowcenary teams to go questing for items too. Also you can leave them training in the buddy dojo. You’ll probably end up with favourite default buddies that you take on quests (and equip from the felyne blacksmith next to the main blacksmith). But you’ll end up wanting at least 8 or so others. I just recruited them as and when options opened up. It’s a long game and it introduces the subsystems bit by bit, based on which quests and sub quests you complete. Some later sub quests also require you to take particular palico (cat buddies) types with you on quests, as different ones specialise in healing, support, bombs etc. I generally use a healer cat as my main buddy as it helps keep online allies alive too, but experiment with different stuff and assigning different moves to them.

Cool, I’m playing solo right now until I’ve gotten further 8th the game and feel more comfortable with it. Is the idea then to switch out my 2 that you start with then? I set my cat to be a healer from the off.

Not at all, you can stick with them, I certainly did! Just remember to upgrade their gear when you upgrade yours!
There will be various quests and sub-activities that you’ll want a stable of reserve buddies for though, but I wouldn’t worry about it until you reach a tutorial for those activities

Cool, cheers for the tips! Going to get stuck into it tonight and spend time checking out the options for upgrading and getting used to using the Wirebug.

Some of the quests on this title update. I’m at A8, the risen elder dragons, and Risen Chameleos is just a poison factory. Had to start taking in followers as online hunters seem to be dying in droves.

About 10 hours into this now, just did my first Rampage which was pretty cool and mixed things up a bit to the normal quests. Things are slowly starting to click (still a lot I’m sure will come as I delve deeper and deeper)

Where do you buy traps and traq bombs from? I can’t seem to buy any from the main shop in the hub, are they just found during quests?

Also, regarding upgrading armour/weapons, is that something that’s a bigger focus after you complete the story mode and start doing online quests and event quests and stuff? I have Black Belt armour on at the moment and stat wise nothing seems to have come close to it.

Speaking of Event quests, how do you play the events where you unlock the gear based on other games? Is that post game again?

Traps you make- buy trap tools from the trader and add thunderbugs for shock traps and nets (Ivy+spiderweb) for pitfall traps.

You can send buddies off to trade with the Argosy for most of those ingredients too, check it out at the buddy plaza. If it’s not there yet, it’ll open up as you progress through the game.

The Black Belt armour is designed to help new players out, it’ll be good for your low rank campaign, just keep an eye on armour options as you move into high rank (after defeating Magnamalo).

Not sure about which event quests you have access to, but if it isn’t there yet, you might need to beat the various campaigns. It’ll all open up in time :)

Cool, it sounds like most of the stuff should open up after I beat the campaign then. I’ll focus on getting that done.

How do I check/increase my Hunter Rank? That’s what everyone is taking about when they mention they are HR8 and stuff right?

Proper Monster Hunter noob me haha

Ok, so HR can stand for 2 things. The first is hunter rank, which is initially the level you are hunting at, the difficulty level of your current quests. It is recorded on your status screen and also your guild card, and initially matches up to the star rating of the quests you take, until it is uncapped by completing the hub campaign. It can also mean ‘High Rank’.

Progression through Monster Hunter Rise is-
Village quests. These are your basic offline quests, with a star rating. They used to be called ‘low rank’. This is your village campaign against Magnamalo.
Hub quests. These are your online, multiplayer quests picked up in the village hub. You can still do it all solo if you want, but the difficulty is increased over the village quests. This is called ‘high rank’. If someone says ‘HR8’ they are towards the end of the high rank campaign.
If you pick up Sunbreak, you’ll then move into a third campaign called ‘Master Rank’. Push on through Sunbreak and you’ll reach the anomaly quests.

You’ll eventually end up with four sets of quests- the village, high rank, master rank and anomaly. You’ll end up with an uncapped hunter rank (going all the way up to 999), an uncapped master rank, and an anomaly rank too.

It’ll all gradually make more sense the more you play :)

Thanks for that, I continue on with the Village Quests and clear the story mode and then I’ll tackle some online stuff.
What you will find is that if you stick to village mode, the early hub quests will be very easy when you get to them, and a lot of the gear you’ve been given is designed to shepherd new players quickly through low rank and high rank to prep them for Sunbreak. Some quests are marked as key quests and they are the only ones you need to do to advance to the next urgent quest.

However! You might find advancing quickly means you are leaning on powerful equipment rather than learning monster ‘tells’ to evade their attacks. So if you are getting hit a lot but it’s bouncing off your armour, slow down and learn the fights. Otherwise endgame will get really tough if you haven’t built in that experience along the way.

Similarly, messing around with armour pieces and decorations is a whole game in itself, it’s worth playing around with builds as it’ll pay dividends later on.

I was thinking that about the monster fights, I have tried to subconsciously slow down the fights but I have found I can just go all out and it doesn’t affect me too much.

With weapons upgrades, do some open as you beat certain monsters? I noticed in the upgrade menu some of the options are unavailable or behind a big ?
