Monster Hunter Rise Demo out now on Steam

I'll link my post in the OT

I've gotten it to run now, played the Gr. Izu quest. Had to mess around with the inputs a bit, but it's playing nicely now with a Switch Pro Con.
The demo doesn't seem to like my monitor running overclocked at 72 hz, tho. It crashes at that framerate. Running below, either 36 fps or 60 fps vsynced via RTSS or solves that issue. Once in the game I can also unlock the framerate again and it doesn't crash, then.

Never played a monster hunter game before, is this a good one to jump in?
In my opinion one of the two best entries for newcomers, the other being MH World. I name both because there's some key differences between them, of which one might prefer some over the others, making either Rise or World a better first time experience.
Otherwise the series has never been as beginner friendly as with these two.

Here's hoping the modding community develops a save transfer app like they did with Monster Hunter World on PS4 and PC soon. Wanna play Sunbreak on the Steam Deck day 0.

I've been going back to the demo and doing the quests a few times at this point; and honestly? I'm seriously surprised by how little I like the PC version. I love, love, love the game on Switch, it's easily one of my absolute favourites on the system. So far my second favourite Monster Hunter ever, even. Only behind MHP3rd on the PSP.
But as shocked as I am to even think or say/write this, I think I actually prefer MH World to Rise on PC, even if I couldn't imagine myself playing the former over the latter ever if both were on Switch for instance. It's so weird.

It really comes down to PC -> World, Switch -> Rise for me. They simply lend themselves very well to the respective platform, but don't/wouldn't work for me the other way around.
But hey, at least I'm going to save the money I planned to spend on Rise PC this way. More power and cash to Elden Ring instead!

But why would you not want better performance on the PC? Seems a bit weird to prefer it on a platform where it looks worse and plays worse

Plays worse? I don't agree with that, Rise plays great on Switch in my opinion. Sure, PC looks nicer and performs better, but Switch (obviously) still has the benefit of hybrid console gaming over it.
And given that I've got World on PC already, I don't mind having Rise on Switch instead for that portable Monster Hunter fix. To me Handheld Monster Hunter is still the most enjoyable Monster Hunter with all the grinding and such. And if I want to play a MH on PC, then I can always pick up World again as an alternative. Best of both worlds in my eyes!

Naw I agree with @Imitatio here the PC version of Rise is giving me whiplash because the 60+fps is screwing up my eyes and this hasn't happened to me with other fast games on PC. I don't know, but the implementation feels weird ngl.

Also handheld play is really important for a lot of people.

Same boat here. I've never really played one at all myself.
Well, let's say the game is the most or second most welcoming to beginners the series has ever been yet Rise is still so dumb about the pace and order it hands out information in that the community's friendliest content producer felt the need to record a near three hour video to better ease newcomers into the Monster Hunter experience:

144 fps on this feels really nice. I'd be more okay with the Switch version if it managed to keep a solid 30 but it often doesn't due all the dogs on screen + certain maps. Granted I always played MH behind my desk even when I played it on 3ds lol.

oh, neat! I am sure I will like this game. I was thinking of maybe getting it on Switch or PC.

Do you know why?

World was my first Monster Hunter game, and I knew I wanted to get Rise when it was first announced. The moment it was leaked for PC though, I then got stuck trying to decide and never bought it. I like the idea of portability on Switch, but also better performance for PC and always knowing games will be forwards compatible.

In a way simply playing the demo is less intimidating than starting the real thing if you want to try it out for yourself right now. The full game overwhelms you with tutorial boxes at the start. With the demo, pick a weapon, watch a 10-20 minutes guide about it on YouTube, then go at your own time. Still takes some investment, but in a more managable chunk.

Fun fact about this demo is that it's different than the Switch one. Looks like it's based on the final console build rather than the original demo, with a couple small quirks here and there. Hoping that they address some issues with whatever the final PC build is, the last patch on console was a bit disappointing for me personally.

Runs p good though. I'm forced to play most of the time in docked mode anyways, so gaining whatever performance on PC is gonna force me change over for the most part.
