After I'm done with replaying Samus Returns, I'll have left 3 of the biggest hits of the series 😭 I'm a bit afraid of changing my opinion of them, especially Fusion, but I kinda doubt it. But it's been 11 years so who knows. All I'll say is that Metroid is awesome and I'm glad there are so many games to play. I hope MS is working on Metroid 6 and not on a remake!

For me, Fusion is a timeless masterpiece that never gets old nomatter how many times I play it. It's still my favorite 2D Metroid game. Hope it holds up for you!

There's a bit near the beginning of the second Famicom Detective Club where they ask you to examine a corpse, and I was looking all over it finding nothing of note. I believe the solution ends up being to click on the neck in order to move aside the hair and reveal a neck bruise that you couldn't see at all.

And I was just like "ah, so that's where those parts came from".

Thought that would be interesting to share here; -- A new interview with Samus' Japanese voice actress from Other M (Ai Kobayashi) was published

I feel like an idiot! Been playing SR in like 20m bursts so I ended up missing the Spring Ball in Area 2 because I didn't explore the top of the tower 'cause I closed the game because of some life stuff. Got pretty stuck for a moment lol. Anyway. Super fun game.

I actually really like this about Samus Returns design in that you are free to explore each sub area in a nonlinear fashion. Most areas are significantly more expansive than RoS and AM2R, so it kind of feels like mini sandboxes to explore/get lost in.

SHINESPARKERS :
There was criticism from fans of how Samus was characterized in Other M. How do you personally feel about this criticism?

AI KOBAYASHI :
I was completely unaware of such criticism.
Why ..
Why would someone even ask her that..? 😩

That one Metroid requirement part is so random but after that you get the Diggernaut so everything is forgiven 😚

Edit: also can I say I suck at this game? By far the one I died most. The timing of the parry on the Zeta Metroids... 😭

It's a bastard hard game, everything hits like a truck even on Normal. Part of me wonders if they kept the damage values from their proposed Fusion remake 😂

Man playing prime remaster and it’s taking its toll on me. Seems like I’m only about 30% done. The back tracking and Metroidvania gameplay is getting the best of me.

This is one of the first things I remember noticing when I played it. It's less novel now after Dread stayed this course, but at the time Fusion was the only Metroid where Samus felt that fragile, and it had a whole plot explanation for it that's absent here.

I think the main culprit is probably Lightning Armor. Similar to how they vastly overtuned the health and aggressiveness of the enemies to force you to use the parry move constantly (which itself couldn't have helped), they probably wanted to make sure you wouldn't be able to survive without using Lightning Armor to supplement your very meager natural defenses. A lot of Samus Returns is designed in this same sort of constricting manner; it stands out from other Metroid games.

I don't know, you could argue that's also true of Echoes, the original Metroid, and Return of Samus as well.

At least Dread had sublime movement options to mitigate that somewhat. Being able to slide, parry while moving and flash shift creates a lot of fluidity in damage avoidance where SR is largely static.
I feel like I remembered Lightning Armour using way less Aeion, I was rudely dispossessed of that belief when I played it the other day.
I wonder how they'd balance it if it were re-released for Switch now they have Dread behind them.

I feel like Echoes starts oppressive and then gets chill.
For sure, it's pretty conventional in that regard in that by the end Samus can rip and tear her way through everything except bosses

And I'm done with Samus Returns! I love this game to death and, even with the added unnecessary boss fight at the end, this time I had a good grasp of the mechanics and it wasn't as frustrating as the first time so I can even forgive that. What a good game. I think it definitely grew on me compared to the first time I played it. So many good areas, backgrounds, fights (!!!!)... They ended up making a really good action game out of this simple extermination game boy game. Need to replay Super, Fusion and Dread but I'd DARE say it's my favorite so far of the 2D games. Tiny nitpick: at the beginning I'd always press A to confirm a dialogue box and it would trigger the aeion ability that shows the map, which is super lame. Anyway! Metroid is so good. 🥰

Just started Metroid Prime Remastered today, which is my first Metroid game ever, and I just reacquired the missiles, and I must say I appreciate the generous hitboxes for most of these enemies. The music is great too. So far this game has what I've been missing from the Halo games lately. and that's the pseudo-horror element. Halo hasn't been the same since they ditched the Flood, so playing this game where lots of tiny creatures are all over the place, yeah, right up my alley.

boy you’re gonna love the phazon mines!

Kenji Yamamoto initially presented a butt rock soundtrack direction for Metroid Prime... I'm really, really glad Clark Wen and the others suggested he go a different direction, lol.

good lord

Prime wouldn't even be the same sort of experiment with an OST like that prototype track

Amazing what music can do for a game

Yeah, I don't think rock music (especially boomer butt rock!) really fits the sort of atmosphere Metroid aims to create. Even the Sylux guitar riff from the Prime 4 trailer had me 😬 a little, lol...

I'd previously heard about Retro approaching Autechre to do Prime's soundtrack, but this is the first time I'm taking the time to listen to their stuff. It's really good! I can see exactly why they were considered, and I think they'd have done an amazing job. Shame it ultimately didn't pan out, but Yamamoto blessed us with gold, so it all worked out in the end.

Imagine shelving a rock track and then coming back with Chozo Ruins, one of the single most "this is Metroid Prime" music tracks of all time. When I think of Prime music it's either that or Phendrana Drifts, but since you encounter Chozo Ruins first it's probably the main track I always think of when I think of the series' general musical vibe. It just completely sets the standard.

sorta like the story of how Zelda's theme was a backup track written in a one-day panic by Kondo after he found out the planned track wouldn't be legal

musicians are superhuman, I swear

@Aurc look what YouTube is recommending to me all of a sudden!!!!

When I heard about that early rock direction before I was thinking it would be more like Pink Floyd or something, and not literally just the Frigate Orpheon from Prime Pinball

I'm excited for a Metroid VI by Mercury but for the sake of the series health I rather we don't get them on the same year. Hopefully by 2025 it's ready but Nintendo decide to sit on it and release it on 2026, while preparing Metroid VII and Super Metroid remake. Now that's what I'd call greedy.

My biggest dissapointment with the trailer was that combat looked exactly the same as what I just played in Prime Remasted. I didn't expect a huge upgrade in graphics because that's already one of the best looking games on the console, but give the combat a little more kick. I want to see new combat physics at play here and really up the movement, AI and weight behind things. The combat in Dread was so good it reminded of a side scrolling Doom Eternal, why wouldn't the 3D version of the game follow suit?

Prime was never really a 3D version of the contemporary 2D Metroid games. It's better to think of the series as diverging after Super Metroid, with Prime focusing more on the atmosphere and some of the elements the 2D games have since discarded as "clumsy" like weapon switching and a tankier Samus. Whereas Fusion and its sequels made Samus more agile and vulnerable, and put an increased focus on movement and combat.

That said, Prime really should have better combat. Or at least less of it.

There was a Twwitch AMA with Sean Booth where he talked about it for a minute.

I still about it every day. It's my Roman empire.

Not in 2. 3 is very linear so yes?

I think that will be a priority in 4, yes.
Only way I will purchase it. Trying to okay through 1 remastered is a choir. I only have time for short play sessions 30min-1hour and I don’t feel like I’m making progression due to all of the navigating and backtracking.

They could add a few more ways to get around (kind of like the ship/fast travel points in Prime 3) but I never really had an issue with Prime 1’s map. Once you know the general layout and how it all connects you can get anywhere in the game in just a few minutes
Same. By the endgame I had it completely memorized, including the shortcuts.
