Welcome bounty hunters, to the Famiboards Metroid Prime and Fusion 20th Anniversary Event! This event serves to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Metroid Fusion, initially released in North America on November 17, 2002, and Metroid Prime, released the very next day, on November 18, 2002. Additionally, the event serves as a broader celebration of the Metroid series overall, and the renewed passion, vigor, and enthusiasm we as its fans have, following the release of last year's long-anticipated Metroid Dread. There may still be no sign of the hotly rumored and speculated upon Metroid Prime remaster, nor any concrete news to speak of regarding Metroid Prime 4, but that's certainly no reason to stop we, the Fami community, from celebrating the legacy of this treasured landmark series! Feel free to use this thread not solely to post about your badge progress, but also to share your fondest Metroid memories.

The event will run for two months, from today, November 17, 2022, to January 17, 2023. There are a total of 45 badges available for the Fami community to earn, which is our highest badge count in a site event to date! More badges available to earn should naturally result in a longer than average event duration, don't you agree? As always, badges are featured in a section on your profile, and can also be displayed over your posts. Furthermore, all badges will award 15 Famicoins each.

As was the case with previous site events, there is no in-depth system in place to verify that members have indeed fulfilled the prerequisite badge condition. Each badge has a "Picture Proof" prompt in its description, so a photo or screenshot will suffice. This is mostly based on the honor system, so please be honorable!

Questions & Answers

Where are the badges for Prime Pinball, Prime Hunters, Other M, and Federation Force?

As you may have noticed, there aren't any! Simply put: first and foremost, I believe this event should be about having fun, and these four Metroid games in particular consist of either unconventional spinoffs, or titles of... dubious quality, and great controversy. I didn't want anyone to feel compelled to play these, and as such, they've been completely omitted. Maybe they'll be featured the next time this event rolls around, if I feel an inclination to scrape the bottom of the barrel for new badges.

Note: Defeating Ridley in Prime Pinball and Other M still counts towards Ridley Ravager... a humorously insignificant event implementation, to be sure.

UPDATE 1/18/23: Badges for Metroid: Other M have been added! See post #3.

Why no speedrun or difficulty level badges?

There's a certain level of accessibility I desired from this. As such, I decided not to implement any hardcore gamer badges. Getting 100% presents a respectable enough challenge on its own, after all!

Why are two fan made Metroid games featured in the event?

Because: fan made or not, they're both awesome games that are of an extremely high quality! The more folks that play Metroid Planets (by VacantShadeGames on Metroid Construction) and AM2R (by Milton Guasti, aka DoctorM64), the better. I personally believe they're easily on-par with Nintendo's official output, and I'm proud there are Metroid fans out there that could put together such incredible works, out of a sheer love and passion for the series.

Important Note: One does not need to obtain any badges from Metroid Planets or AM2R, in order to obtain the Metroid Matriarch badge (effectively this event's equivalent to a PlayStation Platinum Trophy). Badges pertaining to Metroid Planets and AM2R still award Energy Tanks and Famicoins, however.

Wait, this is slightly confusing. Why are there badges for Metroid 2 in general, as well as badges pertaining to AM2R, specifically?

Plainly and simply: playing Return of Samus, or Samus Returns, can only earn you the badges in the Metroid 2 section, but playing AM2R can earn you badges from both categories. Thus, the optimal, most efficient route (for any completionists reading) would be to just play AM2R, and earn both sets of badges at once.

Does it matter what platform I play on? Does it need to be original hardware?

Nope! Just be aware that Famiboards does not condone piracy, and cannot assist you in any way, when it comes to obtaining ROMs, ISOs, or similar. Please make it easy on all of us, and simply don't ask about that stuff, or discuss it in this thread at all.

Can I use guides and videos to assist me in achieving 100% item completion / 80% Logbook completion?

Feel free! Not only do I encourage you to use guides and videos at your leisure, but it's not like I'd be able to stop you, even if I wanted to! What you aren't allowed to do is outright cheat, which should hopefully be obvious. Anyone found to have nabbed someone else's completion pics off Twitter, Reddit, or similar, will be disqualified from the event.

Absolutely stunned by the quality of this event ST
Definitely going to use this as an excuse to crack open a Metroid game I've never played before

Yo Aurc, this is going to be awesome :) Glad I saved replaying the Prime games for myself recently and I probably have a Super Metroid and a Metroid Dread run in me. Haven’t done either this year yet :)

AM2R was ridiculously good - as good as everyone always said. But I was unable to get into it until I learned you can play it on Switch (homebrew, obviously). It was absolute dynamite in handheld mode.

Anyone know if you can install Metroid Planets on Switch?

Happy anniversary to one of the best games ever made, metroid prime. And also to the other one that's one of my most hated games.

I'll try to squeeze in super/zm in my schedule. On one hand I want to replay the prime games so bad, on the other still holding on for a fresh take with a remaster...

Definitely going to use this as an excuse to beat the prime games in full. Only ever finished one. Great event!

Great contest! Not sure I'll have time to participate though.

Remember: Metroid is the only Nintendo franchise that's Dr. House M.D approved!

Gonna go for all the cool looking badges. Used this as an opportunity to do a quick nighttime replay one of my all time favorite games and try out the Analogue Pocket screenshot functionality (not that good, I died taking a screenshot). I believe this also qualify me for Zebesian Zoomer.

Welllllll I have been looking for an excuse to replay Dread... might throw a few more in there while I'm at it

Pardon me if this is a silly question, but in cases where some later badges encompass earlier ones (say, beating Metroid 2 or its variants requiring us to defeat more than 20 Metroids), would evidence of the higher-tier achievement count for both badges, or do we need separate photographic evidence for each?

Thanks for the kind words and positive impressions so far, everyone!

@Brock Reiher, good stuff on being the first to earn a few badges! I've awarded them to you, and that should also be reflected in your Famicoin balance (25 per badge). You've also earned an Energy Tank from Pray for a True Peace in Space!, which I've noted in post #6.
Anyone know if you can install Metroid Planets on Switch?
That I have no idea about, unfortunately. I think it'll run well on most PCs, though! I played it with a controller on my mediocre laptop, and it easily maintained 60 FPS.

Not a silly question at all! Makes complete sense to ask. Yes, evidence of the higher tier achievement would absolutely count for the lower, since as you've noted in your example, one obviously needs to defeat more than 20 Metroids to beat Metroid 2. Similarly, if @Brock Reiher decides to go for Kraid Killer, or Ridley Ravager, he's already 1/3 of the way there, even despite no picture being posted, since it's known you have to defeat those two, in order to beat Metroid 1.

I also realized this event should help more people come around to the only true Metroid opinion

That zero mission is the best 2D Metroid game

Happy 20th Y’all!

Somewhere, out there, somewhere other than this darkest timeline, Nintendo released Metroid Prime HD and the Switch Pro today.

It is a little hard to see, but I did collect all energy tanks and missile upgrades.

Excellent work, @Gabev! Just awarded you those badges, and edited your Energy Tanks into post #6.

I’ll save the photo sharing until I beat the game, but I decided to start replaying Metroid Prime tonight via the Trilogy collection on Wii U and wow this game is still phenomenal. I don’t believe I’ve played any of them in over a decade, but the original absolutely stands the test of time like I knew it would. The Frigate is an awesome prologue and has just an astounding sense of place. I’m on Tallon IV now and I’m so excited to keep going.

Super excited for this. Metroid being in my top 5 franchises, I'm more than ready to get bounty hunting!

I think I'm only having time to settle for one game this time around, so of course I'm going with my favourite game in the series, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Settling for as much percentage as possible.

I think I love that game so much because it feels like Metroid Prime - already a fantastic game - on steroids. Every aspect of it is just better, and I think the "dark world" aspect and the dimension-based puzzle solving just adds tension and excitement rather than frustration.

In my opinion, every area in Prime 2 just is better and more refined than its Prime 1 counterparts. Temple Grounds>Tallon Overworld, because it has better music (Those choirs!) more interesting enemies and aesthetic direction. Agon Wastes>Chozo Ruins, the same goes there, I just love the level design and the back half of the area being one big pirate fortress is tense and awesome. Torvus Bog>Phendrana Drifts, with rain instead of snow and just a tense and exciting place to explore, and I love the remix of Maridia's theme in the lower part of Torvus.

Sanctuary Fortress, finally, is just one of my top 5 video game areas. Ever. The aesthetic direction is top notch, and it's RISKY to go for such a place in a Metroid game, but I think it comes to its own and is just so damn cool. And it just outdoes itself time and time again, with the spider ball puzzles, the fight with Dark Samus before the Echo Visor, the Screw Attack.. and then Quadraxis.

I also find the hunt for the keys far more engaging than the Artifact hunt in Prime 1, with you having to find the blue Luminoths in the light world and go to that room's dark world correspondent.

What an incredible game, and one that I hold so near and dear. Really happy to dive into it this afternoon.

I know it’s in part because it’s seared into my memory and also because it is so compelling and excellent, but I am still surprised how I am flying through Prime. In my head, I’ve always taken my time with these games soaking in the sights and carefully considering my path forward and handling enemies. Yet here I already just wrapped up the space pirate base in Phendrana Drifts and I’m sitting outside Thardus’ door with I believe over 60% of the scans done (I definitely got the achievement ping for 50%). I remember the Space Pirate base being one of the two really tough spots growing up (the other space pirate base being the other), but I tore it apart. Wii motion controls absolutely help too. This playthrough is seemingly going down as the most fun I’ve had playing the game.

Gonna tackle Metroid II next. What a great game. The weird red and black filter on the pocket make it look cool since the pocket can't use the default game boy color filters for whatever reason, which is frustrating.
I think I love that game so much because it feels like Metroid Prime - already a fantastic game - on steroids. Every aspect of it is just better, and I think the "dark world" aspect and the dimension-based puzzle solving just adds tension and excitement rather than frustration.
Agree with this completely. Prime 2 really feels like Retro made the series their own without any limitations. Love how weird and different it is.

I did mean to play Fusion before March and have been procrastinating on the Dread speedrun. Might add Metroid and Super Metroid in there, too, if the timing works out. Probably not Metroid II, tho. Hasn't been that long since I replayed it, and it's never an effortless ride.

Second time playing Metroid II and the first time since playing the remake. Lovely game, will go back for 100%. What a great final boss.

This is a good post, but boy I really find it weird to put fan-made games on there while omitting Other M, regardless of it’s reputation. I know AM2R is quality, just seems off to me, but what do I know.

I’ll give Fusion a shot for the first time and see how it treats me.

Nearly done with Prime! After defeating the Omega Pirate I realized I was only short two missiles. I pulled out my old Nintendo Power strategy guide and took a look at the maps to try to remember where I would have missed them since I thought I had done my fully thorough sweep already. One I thought I just misheard the noise for and walked past (the red leaves morph ball tunnel past the lava room in Chozo Ruins) the other though was very frustrating in Phazon Mines since it was literally the room I took stock of my issue in, but I went to Chozo Ruins first so I had to trek all the way back lol. It was the tall room after killing the Omega Pirate and the only indication at all is the noise if you hear it and the X Ray visor. It’s on a platform that doesn’t stand out at all and you have to power bomb it which there are no signs for again aside from the X Ray visor.

But now I’m all good since I have all the scans so far (I didn’t miss any!) and I’m saved at my ship ready to fight my favorite boss fight in the game, Meta Ridley, and then go on to defeat Metroid Prime. Can’t wait to beat it tomorrow!

starting super. playing back to back to back, they did an excellent job making each game feel completely different from the last for the main series of four. haven't really dove into fusion yet but from my memory even though I don't think it's as good as the first three, it definitely still stands on its own compared to them. very talented team was working on this series.

Boss of Dark Agon Wastes defeated!

I knew exactly going in how freaking good this game is, but nevertheless it's been awesome to get a keen reminder.

The opening is so good. A stark contrast to the peaceful opening on Tallon VI, this is pure survival horror material. It's genuinely unnerving fighting possessed federation troopers. And the entry into Temple Grounds gives me the shivers, Just seeing the camera zooming out on this open environment with insects humming about, and the cloudy sky, and the choirs humming, it's so good.

The entrance into Dark Aether, likewise, is also amazing, just the short sequence where Sams gets her hand fried really helps establish what a hostile place this is. Then there's the concept of bosses made up of Samus' abilities, just brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Such an incredible game, still.

Finish wrapping up Metroid II, onto the next one. I like that Metroid and Metroid II don't give you a special reward for 100% or really even acknowledge it as a thing (Metroid II doesn't even let you use all of the energy tanks you find, it's superfluous). Really puts the focus on speed which makes sense since Samus has a job to do. For both tho you certainly have incentive to get as many as you can because you'll need them for Mother Brain and the Queen.

Awesome! Yes, I agree, the game holds up fantastically. I replayed it just last year (for the Prime Hunter badge during the Fami GameCube event, fittingly enough!), and it was still just as masterful as I remembered. The Frigate Orpheon is indeed a heck of a prologue, and I love how Retro quite deliberately paralleled Super Metroid's Ceres Station opening with it, complete with Ridley flying away to the game's primary planetary setting. Things start out quiet, mysterious, and intriguing, easing you into the game from an atmospheric standpoint, while also giving you a feel for how Samus controls in 3D / first-person. Parasite Queen makes for a really neat first boss, and the escape sequence is enjoyable (especially if you Morph Ball through those tunnels!)

Stoked to keep reading your continued impressions on revisiting this classic!

Amazing write-up, Irene! I had no idea you were such a massive Echoes fan. Cool! I love reading about your passion for it. I think Sanctuary Fortress is definitely up there among the best areas featured in the Prime Trilogy, if not simply the best area, period. When you mention Maridia's theme playing in the lower part of Torvus Bog, you mean the rendition of Lower Brinstar, right? So good. I think Lower Brinstar (and all associated variants) is my favorite Metroid track, though it certainly has a ton of great competition. There are still themes from Super that have yet to be remixed in subsequent games, with the triumphant Crateria theme and Lower Maridia being the main two I'd love to see brought back (maybe in Prime 4?)
Gonna tackle Metroid II next. What a great game. The weird red and black filter on the pocket make it look cool since the pocket can't use the default game boy color filters for whatever reason, which is frustrating.
I've never finished the original Metroid II, which is something I still need to remedy, but I played some of it with the EJRTQ Colorization recently, and I really dug the look.

(Great stuff putting in the Metroid work and earning all these badges, btw!)
Omg I missed this. Congrats on getting this all together @Aurc!
This is INCREDIBLE!! Wow.
outstanding job! Can’t wait to dive in more tomorrow!
Thanks, folks! I definitely had some amazing help.

Yeah, definitely an understandable sentiment. I see where you're coming from. I'd like to give the community what they want, so if there's enough demand, I wouldn't be opposed to making some badges for Other M. I was simply coming at it from a perspective of not wanting to make folks feel compelled to play what most would consider to be the black sheep of the Metroid series.

Commenting to say YES PLEASE we want Other M badges. I still need to play that one!
