#7 in opencritic's 2021 hall of fame

the only games here i've played are hitman iii, rift apart, and psychonauts 2.

psychonauts 2 would have been considered a good 3d platformer in 2005. it's creative and charming in 2021 but that only goes as far as its aesthetic.

rift apart is a lot better when it comes to movement and exploration, but it is pretty vanilla in its presentation and the 'rift' gimmick was mainly a marketing tool.

hitman iii is pretty rad though. aside from the final mission, it gives you the freedom to be as stupid as you want to be and that's great.

Samus returns, again

Safe to say Metroid is officially back. Excited for the future of the IP.

Might be ridiculous but I feel that 86-88 range is kind of on the "This is a really beloved title for fans of a series, but the general public doesn't absolutely need to get their hands on it" spectrum. Hope people don't hold out on getting into the franchise because of a measly 2-3 points when all is said and done, lol.

Nintendo's marketing should carry it hopefully, it's been pretty good!

for sales, i think there's zero difference between an 88 and a 90. both tell people the game is great if you're interested in the genre.

Yeah I'm gonna add to the chorus of it being a shame that Eurogamer and Polygon don't do numerical scores in this case since both sound like they would be close to a 10/10

But in the end it doesn't matter that much

I don’t think there are many people saying “I like the look of this game but it has an 88 instead of a 90 so I’m not buying.”

Anything from 80 and above is generally not a deterrent.

Interestingly, it doesn't actually seem like the EMMI were that controversial an inclusion at all, at least for reviewers. Possibly because IGN used a different reviewer, but I don't think I've seen a review that seems to dislike them yet

The best 2D platformer of all time is sitting on 85 on Opencritic; meanwhile Ni No Kuni 2 is on a 86.

With that in mind, I won't complain about the reception one bit here, especially as I have not played the game yet.

Everything written in the reviews is making me happier than any high score could, though.

It could be that I'm too paranoid, I've just seen a LOT of forum/Discord activity that amounts to "Oh, just a high 80's game?"

I think I remember even games like Horizon getting responses like that from some people. Might just be fanboys though. Either way yeah, I hope you're right and Dread is super successful. Like I said, think it's mostly down to marketing

Is there something else than just glory when it comes to the metacritic score I just don't see? Like, would it actually matter if the game end on an 8.0? Seeing some of the reactions when it drops to 0.1 in here I do feel kind of stupid asking this lol.

I don't think it's too complicated. For pragmatic reasons, higher review scores -> higher sales numbers (however small the difference) -> publisher wiling to invest more in sequel.

There's also wanting your favorite games to be recognized by others. People are happy when more people like the things they like.

That said, I'm sure most are just living it up / half joking for fun. What's the harm?

I do think there is an argument to be made that a 90+ game gets people with little to no interest to take a second look because it's such a rare occurrence but I doubt it has much if at all any effect on sales.

No harm at all, Was just thinking maybe I missed something. It's Nintendo we talk about and of course they see sales and bigger sales = better chances for more Metroid in the near future, but of all publishers around I think Nintendo cares least about Metacritic scores.

In the end, I am just very happy they invested in a proper 2D Metroid again. And I even get to play it this week!!!

This is very true. Amd what @FiveOVER said holds true too: it's great when you see people getting interested in a series you love they previously had no interest in. And I do think metacritic scores can do that.

Hey Eurogamer stole my tagline! The Chozon One is way better than The Chozo One too.

I don't think it matters at all really, I am uncharacteristically wondering how it will effect sales in this case just cause Metroid doesn't have a strong sales base, but yeah 99% of the time people overinflate the importance of Metacritic (or are joking about overinflating its importance, as previously mentioned by others)

Looking at that list from OpenCritic, how many games left have a chance of breaking 90? Seems like 89 has been the celling this year.

i think most people reacting to small drops or jumps in meta are doing so tongue-in-cheek.
Not happy about it perse but if it drops and stays at 87 then I at least had a good prediction.

Plenty happy with it being high 80s though. Been seeing some sad people last few weeks who didn't think a 2D game deserved a high metacritic score. Really sad stuff.

Forza typically reviews very well. Maybe Halo and Shin Megami Tensei?
Yeah, my guess would have been Horizon 5 as well. Would be amusing for a racing game to get one of the highest scores of the year.
Halo and SMT are also good picks. Halo IMO could be a GOTY contender if the campaign is good.

The Halo Infinite MP turned out to be unbelievably excellent imo, so yeah, if the campaign is at least quite good, it could easily be a contender. I see high 80s for that one as well.

I thought I'd care more about the game's score then I actually ended up caring. The reviews themselves are what has my attention. That's some serious praise on the bosses and gameplay. Seriously can't wait!

Pre-ordered back at E3. Glad it seems I'm going to be getting a great game, not that I had any doubt. My only concern is the OST not living up to the standards of Super and the Prime games. The samples I have heard on YT sound good enough, just not as memorable.

Nothing worse than reviews that are like "but does it REVOLUTIONIZE the genre?". Game's reviewing great though, which is nice.
the idea that Metroid Dread needed to change formula seems kinda strange when so many people were convinced MercurySteam couldn't even do a good one of those in the first place (which I heavily disagreed with anyway considering I loved Samus Returns).

Fantastic reviews. Hurts even more now that both my game copy and SWOLED don't seem to have shipped yet, so apparently I will only be able to join in on the greatness next week. Still hoping for some sort of miracle though, because I'm that naive (and desperate).

Thank god Kat Bailey didn't review Metroid Dread, I think she would have give it a 7 score. Crisis avoided.
