I just realized the dueling mechanic from Mario Party 2 probably won't be in this.

I loved the Western Land shootout one!

Duels are back; but with the proper duel minigames from later installments rather than the board-specific duel challenges in 2. Land on the same space as your opponent during the last 5 turns and it's time for a duel.

No betting Stars like 5-7 though unfortunately, back to just coins like 2 and 3.

Online with friends autosaves every turn, and you also have the option to leave and resume any time. Obviously there are also more modes available online this time too; a bunch of minigame-based modes.

I'm curious to find out how the save/resume feature will work. What if you can't get the same group of friends together again, can someone else take one of the spots? Do you need the exact same amount of people to continue said game? On what console does the game get saved? How many games can you save? Can you even play a new game before you finish the unfinished one?

The functionality sounds great on paper, but how useful it is depends completely on how it's implemented. I guess we'd have to wait til reviews drop to find out.

As someone who loves Mario Party (it's the most played series amongst my friends and I) but was disappointed in Super Mario Party... I AM STOKED for this. I love the N64 ones so this is perfect. I'd love for them to add more boards via dlc but considering it didn't happen last time I won't hold my breath. Online is gonna be a game changer for me and my friends

I mean it was an unlockable in the shop in Mario party 1, which is back in this game as well! Though that begs the question if it’s Bowser’s Magma mountain as well

Mario Golf didn’t get any announced till the week before launch actually. Also this is the first one with online from launch and an Eshop page dlc warning so I wouldn’t rule it out

Like @Mandos said this is the first game that'll launch with online functionality out of the box. If enough people play it online and NSO subs get sold because of Mario Party, I'm sure they'll update it with a new board or two down the line to keep the game relevant and on the sales charts. Maybe the DLC won't be free, but if there ever was a Mario Party that begged for DLC, it's this one.

I used to play a lot of Mario Party back in the day with my friends. But I've personally never bought a Mario Party game in my life. We always played at a friends house, and he always bought them, as only one copy was needed for four players. So even if they'd release a pack of new maps, characters and games, they'd only sell one copy of the pack per ~four players. This new game can be played online, so if you want to play it with friends through NSO you all need a copy of the game and a NSO sub. That means if the same four people play the new game every weekend, a DLC pack would result in four sales instead of just the one.

And yes, I know Super Mario Party sold like 15 million copies, but the attach rate for DLC is often low, but way higher for online multiplayer games than for single player ones.

I think Nintendo will just do a Mario Party Superstars 2 at some point and have new boards there. I still expect at least one unlockable board here, but any future boards won’t come until a sequel imo. I’d love to be wrong and there’s a lot of dlc boards because I want as many N64 boards remade as we can get in this game.

They have been really specific about the number of returning boards... "There are 5 Boards from N64" "5 Classic Boards Return" "5 Boards"

I hope that online functionality going forward meant that Mario Party will be a major series like Mario Kart, because to me Mario Party is similar to Kart in that there's practically nothing that played like it, but unlike Mario Kart, there are no direct contenders for Mario Party. Certainly there are some similar type of games like I guess 100% Orange Juice or Fortune Street, but Mario Party no longer had companies trying to compete with its combination of board and minigame gameplay. That Mario Party Netplay Discord is also surprisingly very populated, which goes to show how much people wanted online in a Mario Party game.

Also, if it would be possible, having retro minigames in future Mario Party games like Mario Kart would be neat, though maybe it shouldn't take up like half of the selection (around 20% would be enough).

I know I saw some people wanted GC boards too. They probably could remake those too one day. From Mario Party 5 they were using Orbs to throw onto spaces. They don’t have to bring those boards back with that mechanic really, but it was such a big mechanic I don’t see them bringing those boards without it.

Mario Party 4’s boards would float in the air. That was the one thing I didn’t like. They weren’t naturally part of the board so I’d like to see them remade with the path in a natural setting.

I know some people would dislike it but Mario Party would be a perfect long-term game, adding boards, characters as DLC as time passes. There are a few problems of course, like if the base game had bad mechanics all the following content would be bad too, so that's a risk. But with the right base, it could shine so much.

Never gonna happen though, I know.

On topic, would love to get this game but I have zero friends that: 1- have a Switch with NSO, 2- Are willing to buy this.

It just isn't the same with others. The banter of fucking up a friend is so much funnier.

Yeah this is honestly the perfect game to add dlc into the expansion pass with. A huge family friendly game like AC is.

Mario Party Superstars have the mysterious descriptor of "in-app purchases" on its page, so it would not be surprising if that decided to offer some form of expansion through the service (Animal Crossing New Horizons also has it, but I am not sure if it was there all this time).

AC had this from day one I believe, but if I recall correctly it's because if you don't have an NSO sub it'll send you to the eShop to get a subscription if you try to go online. So I'm not sure if that necessarily points to DLC, but it would be cool!

I feel that, I really loved Skateboard Scamper from Mario Party 2 but I don’t think it got in either. We’re at the mercy of dlc.

Yeah, the marketing is really clear on there being FIVE (5) returning boards from N64 games. There's always a chance that they're hiding stuff but I don't think they'd be so explicit about the total number of boards if there were more than that kicking around.

However they’re also explicit on the N64 part. They’ve also hidden the character select and the hub shop interior. Could be a remix map or a gamecube map. Also none of the revealed boards are locked and even SMP with its meager 4 boards had the fourth locked

They've also just kind of moved away from locked content in multiplayer games in general since the start of this generation. Even with stuff locked, SMP still revealed all the characters and boards prior to release.

I'm not saying to give up hope, I'm just saying don't buy it expecting that there's a secret sixth board.
