Wait wait wait, Tokita the man behind FFIV and Chrono Trigger directed this??? It gets even better.

Oh man, I was already sold on Front Mission, this is great. Hope she's back to do the soundtrack on both of them again.
I’m pretty sure LAL was Tokita. The combat design is definitely reaching towards CTs positional elements but I don’t think it quite comes together. But there’s a clear throughline from LAL to CT to Parasite Eve if you know what to look for in the combat system design.

FM was Shimomura and Noriko Matsueda (FF X-2, Tobal 1, Racing Lagoon, The Bouncer) and it’s a solid mix of epic militaristic battle themes with more laid back electronica/jazz/fusion in the towns. Criminally underrated work by both of them.

FWIW, in MobyGames's Live A Live credits, the other games that share the most staff with it (14-17 of 47 credited for LAL) are SMRPG, FFIII, Romancing SaGa 2, FFV, and Chrono Trigger. Doesn't take into account things like certain people being more influential to the end result, though.

i have 50 characters and i'll use them, all of 'em
Still can't believe this is a thing.

I never played Live A Live before but I know it's very highly regarded so I'm excited for it.

What kind of reviews did this get outside of the US? Did people consider it to be as good as other square games that released in the 90s?

Btw am i the only one who always pronounced the first "live" in the title as "to live"?

Now that I know it isn't like that, I'm not sure I know what the title means lol

Nope. Title's weird, classic Square being Square.

Looks like its overall Famitsu score was 29/40. Searching for some other SNES Square games... Secret of Mana 33. FFVI 37. SMRPG 32. Romancing SaGa 31.

This might be a strange resource, but one thing I generally like to consult for fan reception a lot are the GameFAQs average user rankings, which are generally a fairly accurate representation of how fans feel about a game with exceptions of review-bombed games like Last of Us 2. Live-a-Live has a 4.10/5, the same score as Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. It's slightly higher than Final Fantasy V (below IV and VI) but slightly lower than Dragon Quest VI.

I know i said outside of the US, as in japan, did people consider it as good as other square games? Is this another ff6, secret of mana, Chrono trigger?

Game's a cult classic between people who have played it through the fan translation. Each character presents a very different style of game and the concept was very novel for the SNES, and it also looked very nice.

According to Wikipedia, the main complaint that likely contributed to these scores was a very short length compared to other RPGs of the time. This is a remake, so perhaps they address that.

It might also be less of an issue to reviewers nowadays where shorter RPGs tend to be appreciated

Watching the trailer again, it's funny they exclusively show Li Kuugo and none of the other disciples of the Master, like they know 90% of players chose her lol

Lufia II is 4.32 on there, so I'm inclined to believe in this method, even though it should be like a 4.98 out of 5.

This felt so unlikely! I believed we were getting a port, but I didn't realise it would have updated visuals. And to have it revealed alongside Front Mission 1/2 and Chrono Cross - what a treat. SE do like to pander to me a bit, I'm glad there's people behind the scenes clearly fighting tooth and nail for stuff like this.

I think Live A Live was my second or third jrpg back in the early 90's. I'm really curious what the reception will be for this.
It is a very strange and unique jrpg. Like a collection of short stories, each stories "toying" with the jrpg conventions (and each story can have a very different structure compared to the previous one)... to finally become more of a "traditional" jrpg.
Just don't expect 7 epic stories from the get go, the feel of each stories is very unique but with a rather small scope.
I think that is one of the most unique and weird SFC jrpg. Actually, it might be even stranger than Earthbound lol

This is good. Wonder if it gets a physical version
Physical was already confirmed

Thanks y'all! I was really asking about the art, yeah. Is there anything like that in the art?
I checked one of the old fan sites which had sprite dumps for all the monsters. There’s nothing worse than Final Fantasy VI / Chrono Trigger in there as best I could tell. Some enemies are wearing bras and there might be a stray uncovered breast but it’s hard to tell because it’s pixel art from that era.

If there’s anything in the story itself I can’t really answer that as I’ve only fully played the Near Future and Prehistoric chapters in the fan translation.

I think many players are already prepared for this considering how long Octopath has been released.
Possibly down to even the last bit of the storyline(s).

What I find interesting is how this game is only for Switch, which I did not expect since many of their games are multiplatform. Even Octopath Traveler, which was originally a Switch-only release, eventually made its way to other platforms. I wonder if it's going to be the same, or it would be similar to Collection of Mana where it's only released on a single platform.

Thank you for reading.

Mana is definitely the odd man out. I'm assuming this is a timed exclusive like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default II before it.

Never heard of this game, but it looks like Octopath but if it has unique and interesting stories

but am wondering now when DQ 3 remake is getting released ? hopefully there won't be any market saturation once it's released

Preordered the physical version at GameStop today, game looks amazing and I feel like won’t have a huge print run. Gonna be rare down the road.

Yeah but I think Square wouldn't want to release too many HD-2D games close to each other's

actually that would only matter if Square care about how well DQ 3 will do in the west wich I doubt
should be fine. dq3r doesn't even have general release year yet and i'm sure team asano knows how to properly space between their projects
even when considering trst & lal case, ~4 months gap between the 2 is fine tbh, due to different genre

Gosh, it’s awfully tempting to try importing the collector’s edition. That board game would be such a fun little oddity to have.
