Let's be honest, if there's a Super Metroid Remake in the future, it would be very criticized

Outside of the fact that I'd prefer MercurySteam to work on a new game, I honestly wouldn't mind if they remade Super Metroid. Would it be criticized? To high heaven. But...I'm old enough now to stop caring about that kind of feedback. You can't make everyone happy, and Nintendo is a constant reminder of that.

I think MS's remake could be pretty interesting if they implemented their party system and had a fresh new take on the bosses. If Dread has indeed brought in a lot of new fans, it'd be a great way to keep them happy with another great game. There's been the chatter that a remake is a great way to keep a studio busy while preproduction is underway on a whole new game, so this may be a fantastic option.

Every remake, regardless of how good it is, is always heavily criticized, but it's generally not really worth considering the opinions of people who would rather just play the original when planning for remakes. For better or worse, a remake should be planned and marketed as a new game for a more receptive audience. AM2R and Samus Returns both have very different goals, and yet I've seen people claim that the original Game Boy game is better than both of them. Which is... a valid opinion, but not one you would consider when you're developing a remake with the priorities and design philosophies that MercurySteam has. People who think the original games are untouchable and should never be remade are free to think so, but they're not a factor for software planning.

Super Metroid holds up well enough that it doesn't need a remake, but also the game shows its age a lot with aspects like constantly swapping ammo or its floaty and unwieldy controls with wall-jumps or water movement pre-Gravity suit.

As for the map design, Super Metroid does a good enough job guiding players in the right direction with breadcrumbs IMO except in 2 parts. The first is knowing to go back to lower Norfair to get the grapple beam. After getting the power bomb the game gives you breadcrumbs to go to Crateria and show that you need the grapple beam to progress, after which there are no breadcrumbs to tell players to run back to Norfair. (I wasted a lot of time in Brinstar and Crateria as a result) The second is Maridia, and honestly that place is intentionally built like a maze since you do the entire zone at once rather than in pieces like Brinstar/Norfair/Crateria, so it feels like the designers intended it.

I guess what I mean to say is that regardless of Super Metroid's impact and legacy, I think the game has its warts which are far more obvious today. I'm in the camp that it doesn't need a remake and that I'd rather see Metroid 6, but that if Super got a remake the game would get a lot of improvements as a result.

If Super Metroid gets the remake treatment I'm pretty sure it would have a pletorah of QOL improvements that would adapt it to modern times.

And even if it's criticized, I'll be laughing, wine glass in hand, in a bathtub full of Super Metroid Remake copies.

I thought it was a Fusion remake they were making
On ERA, there were different rumors for years. It came out that MercurySteam pitched a Fusion remake, which got them the Samus Returns job. Then there were rumors they were making a new 2D Metroid, but people weren't sure if it'd pick up the hidden ending in Returns, or be a sequel to Fusion. Then there were rumors they were doing a Super remake, and people were conflicted. Then of course, Dread was announced in the end.

So they did indeed pitch a Fusion remake, but made Samus Returns instead. I don't know where the Super rumor came from, but it ruffled some Chozo feathers for a while.

IMO Dread is better than Super Metroid. Super Metroid is a masterpiece, yes, and they needed 27 years to make a game better than that (if we discard Metroid Prime which is Super in 3D and another masterpiece).

I would be OK with a Super Metroid remake. But I have to agree it would be very criticized, and probably there is no need for a remake. It's true that the controls are a little outdated now, as you can only point your gun/missiles in 8 directions instead of 360, and the wall jump is very frustrating. One option could be Nintendo officially hacking the game to improve the wall jump minimum, that should make the game even greater than it is right now.

Discarding the wall jump, the rest of the game is amazing, and makes the game even greater considering it's 27 years old, Dread may be better than Super for me, but historically Super is better than Dread.

And probably the one that needs a remake is Fusion. They should change the map, and/or some other elements in the game to reduce its linearity.

I'm worried about future remakes, because Super and Fusion are the next in sequence to be remade, but I wouldn't want them remade with anything less than current gen graphics and tech. When I say "current gen", I don't really mean Switch (since it's effectively two gens out of date now, if we consider it to be roughly as powerful as a PS3, or a 360).

I'm a huge Metroid Fusion fan, it being one of my all-time favorites, and I'm actually more worried about that remake, to be honest. Yes, the gameplay would be almost assuredly way, way better (especially SA-X's AI!), but I would want to have B.S.L. and the X Parasites truly come to life, with crazy visual fidelity. I'd want the game's atmosphere to be top notch. Dread was lacking in that department, imo, despite how cool and tense the E.M.M.I.s could be.
Those games are fine and won't be remade. They remase only metroid 1 and 2 for good reasons. Putting fusion and zero mission on NSO emulator is going to be fine for many people. They look and play great.

As a big fan of Metroid on the NES and Return Of Samus on the Game Boy, Zero Mission and Samus Returns are different enough from the original games that I can enjoy them on their own terms and not view them as replacements. I would hope any remake of Super or Fusion follows the same raison d'être.

Wario land....

Never played them before.....but could any of them benefit from a remake?

Just make a new one. The Wario Land games were designed around (and for) the Game Boy. A super high definition version of that misses the point.

The first is knowing to go back to lower Norfair to get the grapple beam. After getting the power bomb the game gives you breadcrumbs to go to Crateria and show that you need the grapple beam to progress, after which there are no breadcrumbs to tell players to run back to Norfair.

It does, but you have to pay attention. The (mandatory) Speed Booster room directly below where you get the Ice Beam has blocks which are broken by the Speed Booster which drop you onto Power Bomb blocks. That's the way forward.

If I remember correctly, it's also shown in the Norfair map which you only get after the Power Bombs. Super Metroid is very subtle, but it's almost never hands off.

I'm sure it'll be remade eventually, even though I don't think they should. For me, the time was on GBA or DS. But I feel 'Mercury Steam's Metroid' doesn't blend as well with the older titles, be it in terms of style or gameplay. That's not a bad thing, Dread is my favorite title so far, but I don't think they'd bring forth what made Super...Super.

Not quite sure how to put it, hope you get it lol.
