Music Lesser known video game songs you think are jamming?

Mandos

Pikmin
Pronouns
He/Him
This feels like an obviously missing thread. So forget your Mario’s and Kirby’s here, let’s do the legit stuff. I’ll kick things off

Super Robot Wars is well known for instrumental covers of anime songs but also but it’s spawned tons of its own as well for the main themes. Heck Jam Project has been making most of them for 2 decades on the main theme side, but I’m going back further. Cybuster has 2 great themes, but I’m not here to talk about the one from the iffy anime, I’m kicking off with its theme from the super Famicom days including his own spinoff
Neppu Shippu Cybuster

This being the most recent arrangement of the original(this being from SRWX). There’s also the Jam Project version they made for the SRW anime

As for my second pick, did you know Getter Robo got its own SRPG? Complete with an everyone is here*(that existed in 2000 ish with both anime and manga elements). Getter Robo Daikessen(Decisive Battle) even allowed for half transformations of the Getter suits in their cursed forms. The entire OST is wild but the theme(and impressive opening animation) are definitely top tier

(Here’s the full ost for anyone interested )

Additional props go to F-Zero’s official jazz album that got used in the broadcast version.

So post some lesser known game songs you enjoy! (No undertale/deltarune doesn’t count as lesser known at this point)

One of my favourite songs in all of gaming, from an obscure Simple Series game on PS1:

Here's another one from a wrestling game on GameCube that is a banger:

A LittleBigPlanet spin-off has the best version of "Fly Me To The Moon" ever created, who knew?

This album's pretty interesting, it's an in-universe band from the game "Kentucky Route Zero", and only one of the tracks (Too Late To Love You) makes a major appearance in the actual game. Though "Static Between Stations" at least got a Music Video to promote the fourth act.

Before that infamous Bugsnax theme, Young Horses made this. Definitely a banger, no?

Just because they are on my mind because I was just playing RR64 last week.
PS1 games often get the lions share of the praise for game soundtracks from their generation, and probably rightfully so as the system is home to many amazing soundtracks.
But I will always have a soft spot for what developers were able to achieve with the limitations of N64 soundscape, there is a unmistakable feeling to many N64 soundtracks and you could almost tell the tracks in question were from 64 games even without having an familiarity with the game in question.

Yeah those are solid… makes me wonder if RR64 will make NSO

Video game music that's less well known? I'm in! Starting with this chill yet groovy gem of a dungeon track from CrossCode:

Next up, everyone knows Nobuo Uematsu's famous final boss themes (One-Winged Angel, Dancing Mad, etc.) but this one from Lost Odyssey is ALSO amazing!

I could do this all day, but I'll end with this track from Shantae and the Seven Sirens which is a complete bop:

I really hope so, along with Wave Race 64 and 1080 Snowboarding. Not only do I love the gameplay in all 3, the music in them is excellent ( or at the very least I am very nostalgic for it )

The menu music for Jet Moto 2 sets the tone perfectly. You know you're about to race jet skis across a roller coaster.

Wanted to post a few more tracks I love from N64 games,

And finally the Mystical Ninja starring Goemon opening, never fails to make me smile because it reminds me of old Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Japanese openings, but that's probably intentional.

The entire soundtrack to the Genesis/Mega Drive game Wiz 'n' Liz is ridiculously good. A great example of how to properly utilize that sound chip.

Super Bonk has a pretty enjoyable soundtrack, but my favorite track is Twilight Space. This moodier, spacey piece is a great compliment to the other, more bubbly songs.

It's the perfect track for shooting up smiley faces as a crab!

I hope we can keep this thread alive for a long time, I always enjoy discovering great game soundtracks especially from games that are new to me, and hearing about tracks that others think are hidden gems of sorts. I'll probably post a few tracks every couple of days or so, if the thread is still going.

Yup, why do you think I kicked it off with a SRW original and the opening theme of a Japan only strategy game adaptation of a multimedia franchise about the original combining robot XD. Always fun to see what people dig up
Here have Shin Getters theme

Soundtrack was arranged by Kenichi Sudo and Yoshichika Kuriyama who did a ton of game and anime stuff

Falcom make some absolute bangers, e.g. this track from Ys VIII

DoDonPachi also has some gems.

I'm just getting a video unavailable?

But that is exactly what I'm talking about and why I love these type of threads, I generally didn't play many licensed anime games ( Honestly now that I think about it probably only about 2 dozen or so outta the well over 1000 games I've played ) so I never would've stumbled onto soundtracks like those that you posted and there is some great original material there. Hopefully me posting N64 tracks can be a window for some people who skipped over those games or that system in general.

Fixed it, turns out the embedder doesn’t play nice with playlists, so did the specific song. Plus the full playlist is already in the Op

Asuka 120% is an obscure schoolgirl fighting game that was arguably just as important in creating the anime fighter subgenre as Darkstalkers. It also has an incredible soundtrack, most of which is not available on YT in the best quality.

And here's a remix of the above theme by the Street Fighter EX composer for the series' 25th anniversary:

Yeah it's working for me now, thanks. I've heard of Getter Robo and the influence it had on other mecha anime, but I've never watched any of it or played any games based on it for that matter. I don't know why but after listening to it the first thought that popped into my head was " this would fit in with some of the old Fire Emblem games ".

The game of course is very famous, but this song is hidden behind the multiplayer mode and is a freaking bop

THIS TRACK, I thought I had dreamt it up or something. On every single playthrough the music for Casino Nights felt off.. I've played multiplayer for countless days with my older brother when I was like 4 or 5 but when I got around playing the game by myself in singleplayer I never even tought of touching the MP. Thanks for bringing it back.

This is a BOP

Another thread where posting the entire Gimmick OST is applicable.

Yooo this is so good. Looked up some gameplay and that looks pretty dope too, visually very impressive for a NES game.

Ones of the top of my mind

Kirby's Epic Yarn - Lava Landing

Outer Wilds - Travelers

Sable - The Ewer (Day)

FYI As a series fan I’d just recommend the manga run, which is wild but is pretty short(under 100 chapters for all five entires; it goes Getter Robo, G, Go, Shin and Arc[Which just got a solid but budget anime adaptation that wrapped up last month]. There’s a big tone and art shift(note the early stuff is still pretty dang cool and impressive, he loved his page shots, this is from the first chapter)
image0.png

from G to Go because the author took a 15 year break. Shin to arc was a 9 year break tho the latter went on hiatus and the author passed. The first 2 OVAs Armageddon and Shin vs Neo are both complete reimaginings of Go and New was a reimagining of all of Ken Ishikawa’s work (the series creator) into a single Getter Series so it gets pretty wild)

But back to the music yeah Daikessen has a pretty chill jazzy soundtrack overall definitely suiting a strategy game, though the main theme is the main one that hits the level of OVA osts and main themes(generally by Jam Project)

Also speaking of Goemon, yeah he’s had legit themes going back to the arcade and famicom days too

Sigh hope we get the 64 games on nso… partially since the earlier ones kick my butt
