Its crazy how people don't see why Splatoon 3 wasn't saved for next gen

If the two launch, at most, 6-9 months apart, then I'm not sure it's really going to make much of a difference if support is patched in after the new hardware launches.
aye, I think most nintendo games next year will have a Dane mode. since they won't be made for it, it'll just be increased frame rates and resolutions

120Hz Splatoon 3 yall!

I think what it really means is the true Succ is not as close as we thought or Nintendo is just gonna port it soon after the next system touches down. Or they're gonna have a Splatoon 4 ready in short order like they did with Splatoon 2.

other way around, you don't need games to be explicitly one or the other, generation-wise. all you need to do is patch the game and it can take advantage of new hardware, extending the life of the game

That's assuming it will have BC. Until the thing is unveiled and they specifically show it I would wait to be sure.

What defines proper next gen?
I guess it is getting harder to define it in recent years. I used to think of it as a brand new console with little to no relation to the last, with new games that weren't available on the previous console. That's still true, but majority of PS5 and XSX library is still playable on last gen as well.

I guess what I'm getting at is basically I think Nintendo's next gen is just going to be a 4k switch marketed as a "Switch 2", but they'll continue supporting the previous model(s) throughout it's lifespan.

You don't need to, but once people adopt the "Switch 2", you're not going to get nearly as many people going back to buy Switch games, even with BC. You'll get some, sure, but the title will perform better commercially in the lifetime of the successor if there's a port.

If the Switch successor is at all on the horizon and Splatoon 4 isn't, I would imagine a (staggered) cross-release would be desirable for Nintendo should they release a AAA, continually-supported game at the tail end of a console's life. If it is the tail end of the console's life, of course. We may get a "Pro", have that suffice for a few years, and this whole thing be a non-issue.

I won’t buy another splatoon until they have some sort of local multiplayer. I’ve been told switch is not powerful enough for that. So it’s whatever for me.

Yeah, while nintendo obviously has their next system in development, I don't see a compelling reason for them to release an entirely new console any time soon, nor do I want them to.

It’ll be fully supported by the next piece of hardware/revision which could hit by late next year. Switch still has a lot of life ahead of it.

A successor that adds enough new features to differentiate itself from the current Switch is probably 5 years out, and there’s no way they’d wait that long.

I think we still need to know more about Splatoon 3 as well as what the new Switch is actually going to be before calling this a bad decision. Nintendo has this planned out.

I just wish for three things for Splatoon 3:
  • Let me make pre-made teams for Turf War/let Turf War be a ranked mode
  • Stop with that 2-3 maps rotation thing or mee needing to watch the news
  • Fix that damn netcode

Game development start when they does. Usually, devs doesn't wait to develop a game for a next gen platform. I'm agree that Switch user base is huge and I don't think that anyone on Nintendo wants to avoid them and launch a Switch 2 only game for the next 2-3 years.

For Splatoon 3, I'm very hyped but want to see more before making some assumptions.

I don't think people have taken into consideration that a proper "next gen" for Nintendo could be very far away.

The "next gen" for the Nintendo hardware is what I'd define as far away. The DS lasted 2,288 days from launch to the 3DS, the 3DS lasted 2,197 days, the Switch is only 1,687 days old as of today.

The absolute earliest we could begin in earnest expecting it is around Feb/March 2023, and they'll probably only go that early if Switch sales drop off a cliff by then, like DS/3DS sales did. I'm expecting it to be longer, because there's normally an obvious lull in software support while Nintendo builds up to a new console, and it doesn't seem to be happening for 2022 yet.

Agreed! It's a bit off-topic for this thread to keep this convo going but I feel like 2022 would be offensively early considering we just got a new and more expensive model. Holiday 2023 would feel fine.

As for the topic at hand, I just don't see the need to wait that long for Splat 3 should we end up waiting a lot longer for a next gen switch. Splatoon 2 hasn't been supported for a while and that game itself came out just two years after Splat 1. Splatoon isn't animal crossing, it doesn't really need to be a "one game per gen" type of series.

They can always put the same game in a box labeled "Switch 2" if they don't want to bother with making a version that has more significant changes. That's the route that we're currently seeing elsewhere

I imagine they make games they want to make and the planning didn't align with the release of a more powerful switch.

I would’ve preferred another new IP or reviving an old one before making another Splatoon.

One per generation (or system) would be ideal for the sales, too. Many people that have bought Splatoon 2 won’t buy Splatoon 3 because they already have a Splatoon game to play on the Switch. And many people that don’t have Splatoon 2 won’t pick up Splatoon 3 because they don’t have interest in the series - if they had, they would’ve bought Splatoon 2 before.

I mean, it's a 12m+ selling series. At some point there's a line where it's OK to have multiple entries in a series on the same console. Many games get same platform sequels with far lower sales; certainly major Nintendo franchises like Mario and Zelda have had multiple entries on a console with a lower level of sales.

There's very few i.p. left in Nintendos stable, if any, that would get anywhere close to what Splatoon 3 will sell and aren't already on the platform. You're talking maybe Switch Sports and Nintendogs at this point.

I think the best upgrade they could do for Splatoon 3 is use the extra power for a splitscreen multiplayer mode.

it doesn't need to be. just patch the game on Dane switch's launch to support up to 4K with DLSS
This. I’m fine with it being cross gen. Just patch it like all the games on the PS5/XSX&S to take some advantage of the better hardware be it higher res and or increase fps.

I'd be cool with that... lets hope:

a. the hardware comes that soon
b. they patch it
c. the software still drives the adoption of the new hardware

Porting a game to the next system won't be as much of a hassle as say porting something from Wii U to Switch. Cause its still Nvidia and its still Arm. Just give it a resolution and frame rate boost and call it a day.
