Metroid Dread launched on October 8th, 2021 and was highly praised for it's atmosphere and gameplay, as well as the story. However, the game is quite hard, with some bosses and emenies sapping away quarters or half of your health bar in one hit.

I died over 20 times to this boss.

This can be compared to Dark Souls, and its deadly and rage-inducing bosses.

Nintendo has finally created a beast of a game that exceeds Dark Souls...METROID DREAD! Truly it is Nintendo's Dark Souls... a true masterpiece!

Is there a 3D game more metroidy than the Soulsborne series? (aside the Prime trilogy, obviously)

Arkham Asylum?

haha i died a lot on that boss too.

dread is the first game in a while where these skillcheck bosses are actually fun, because i really want to see whats next in the game.

i wish the arkham series continued in the metroidvania direction instead of going open world

No, I hate it when people compare anything to "Souls" games, even as a fan of the series myself. It's a redundant comparison and games that were difficult or unforgiving existed long before Demon's Souls.

I said yes to git gud. But no to the thread.

Anyway, did I die a lot? Yes
Did it seem unfair? Yes
Was it unfair? No

Is there a solution to every fight and it becomes pretty damn easy? Yes.

There’s no in-game mechanic to call for others to come and do bosses for you in Metroid Dread like in the famously easy Dark Souls.
Y’all didn’t play Samus Returns and it shows
The cover fell off my 3DS stick and I’ve already played Metroid 2. I ain’t playing all that! I’m happy for Samus tho. Or sorry that happened.

Are people suddenly surprised that a Metroid game is difficult? Guess no-one played Fusion, the immediate prequel to Dread, and its biggest influence by far. Or Samus Returns, Mecury Steam's last Metroid game. Or Prime 3 on Hypermode for that matter, as that game loves cleaving whole energy tanks from big attacks.

Undoubtedly, yes.

It’s really the first 2D Metroid game that really makes you learn the boss tells and patterns.

In most boss fights in the older ones you can kinda go guns blazing, let loose all your missions and usually kill the boss before they kill you. That doesn’t work here.

I died a few times on Kraid, but only a few. I'm actually really surprised that people are finding the game so hard. It feels no tougher to me than the usual 2D Metroid. If you've played Samus Returns, even better, since those mechanics have been carried over and expanded upon from there. MercurySteam have done well to modernize the gameplay of 2D Metroid, and create entertaining boss fights as well.

Absolutely. I keep jokingly referring to it as such with my friends. The focus on precision combat/parrying is pretty notable, as is the "die, learn pattern, die, continue to learn pattern, eventually win" trial and error with the EMMIs and bosses. The game is flat out the hardest Metroid, IMO, and a lot of it comes down to requiring you to "get gud" in a Dark Souls-type fashion.

What does that make Super Metroid, then?

I do think Super Metroid was quite as difficult, until you got the boss patterns down...much like Dread.

People are really starting to give me the impression that Souls games must not be that hard. Anytime a game with above average difficulty releases I see this topic. Same thing happened with Kena. Maybe games are just really easy these days and that makes Souls stand out. Having no experience with Souls I'll just say that Dread wasn't very difficult. It required the player to be engaged and pay attention, which is good.

I mean fundamentally yes, souls games aren’t that hard , a lot of it is trial and error and in some cases risk assessment in terms of the corpse run etc . but difficulty will always be subjective , and what makes a game difficult for some will not be the same . personally dying a lot doesn’t make a game hard to me especially not from a skill based factor , i have had more trouble with certain rhythm games at high difficulties than I ever will with cuphead , hollow knight and dread . And dread offers you various options to make an encounter easier too like doing some clean up for items or some quick kill elements if you can figure it out.

I can't believe this Samus Returns erasure

Anyways, Dark Souls as an adjective means (or at least should mean) more than just "hard but fair" boss fights

Even though I think people overrate Fusion's difficulty, I think that game was actually the first to have consistently challenging bosses. Sure, once you learn the pattern they're easier ... but it has some of the tightest hitboxes in the series (which is especially evident with those fucking Robot bosses you have to aim at perfectly), and it was the first time Samus was super weak in a Metroid game.

Hell, it's after-boss X-parasite shenanigans can be pretty challenging, and
are way harder than Dread's version by a country-mile.

I don’t remember much difficulty in Samus Returns other than that digger whatever fight which was fairly late game. Early game Dread seems much harder so far.

I’m past the 3rd boss now, it’s challenging but I wouldn’t say it’s dark souls hard

Does it get harder or something?

I’m really bad at both of them, but a lot of my problems with Dread are caused more by my sudden and inexplicable inability to navigate the map. Even with markers I constantly forget where I want to go, which is, uh, kind of embarrassing.

With Dark Souls it’s more just my general inability to play 3D action games well.

The bosses aren't actually hard they are just harder than nintendo bosses usually are i would compare their difficulty to that of megaman boss wise. Meaning memorize their patterns and their easy.

I first tried the first boss and killed the 2nd boss on the second try in Dread. Third-tried the 3rd boss. A couple of the mini bosses gave me more trouble, but so far I'd say this is a challenging game but Fusion is still harder in the moment to moment gameplay.

From what I've played so far, the game is both difficult and not difficult. Mainly because it doesn't really punish you for playing badly and dying, since there are so many checkpoints and save points. Coupled with there being tons refill stations around, a lot of the difficulty is undercut a bit, but the enemies hit pretty hard so it's somewhat balanced out.

That said it's a solidly challenging game, which I appreciate. A lot about this game just kind of reinforces how far Nintendo has come from the years of designing overly handholdy or easy games and all that kind of nonsense they thought was necessary. BotW being so successful, and the general makeup of the Switch audience, has been pretty great for the company.

1986: Metroid is released and trailblazes exploration based platforming.

1997: SotN reimagines the metroid formula as a gothic RPG, so successfully so, the genre becomes "Metroid-Vania".

2009: Demons Souls, nails the Castlevania experience - in 3D, as a-tough-as-nails action game that revolutionizes 3D combat/progression and launches it's own "Souls-Like" genre.

2021: Metroid Dread is the Souls-Like-Metroid-Vania we've all been waiting for. the king is back baybee

Wow it’s really the same amount of time between SotN and DeS as it is from DeS to Dread?

'metroidvania' was applied to the genre in the mid-late 00s. at first, metroidvania was used to describe castlevania games that were like metroid. actionvania was the term used at the same time to apply to castlevania games that were like bloodlines/super castlevania iv/etc.

What Metroid could learn from Dark Souls:

There's actually some shared DNA between the series. A moody, core experience traversing an interconnected world, with plot not shoved down your throat but rather story told through what you do and the backstory you find through the environment.

Dark Souls isn't afraid to be itself, and enough of that bears similarities to Metroid that the lesson is obvious:

Metroid should understand itself and lean into that, not be afraid to use what it actually is as the calling card for an audience, rather than radically reinventing itself for an audience that might not come.

To go, courageously, into that dark cavern and to beckon others to follow.

Perhaps Metroid was the Dark Soul of video games all along?
