With the Switch 2 looming, I'm curious... how does everyone use their Switch?

gonna make a poll, mostly because there's been some worries of the Switch 2 being too large... but does it actually matter?

First off handheld mode, do you often play a Switch in public spaces? or are you someone who play their Switch while doing something else, binge watching a show or cooking.

do you like to use it while going to bed, or do you only use handheld mode in long trips, like an hotel, family visit or transportation like an Airplane or train

Do you use Table top mode? I for one am an avid user, often using it while sitting on a table, all while I have background noise or watching an video essay

Or are you only a dock user? or do you often Switches to Dock to handled often, or is it a rare occasion?

My main is a Switch Lite... there's only one way I can play it lol

But yes, I play it in public places. In commute and at work mostly. My nightshifts are mostly calm and boring so my Switch Lite becomes my shift-mate. I cannot do the same with the successor. I have the Steam Deck and I couldn't even bring it to work with my trustworthy messenger bag. It doesn't fit...

I play handheld more often than docked, sometimes even when I am bear the dock, but I still use the docked mode too.

Can’t relate to those who use only one or the other.

Fascinating, I often play in handheld mode when I'm doing something, like watching YouTube or in my bed.

But I love using my Switch when traveling, super fun experience.
Yeah, I've never taken my Switch out of my home, so docked has always worked best for me. I certainly don't mind handheld at all, but docked will always be my preference.

Play in handheld at least over 90% of the time, I've grown so used to it because I didn't really have a lot of chances to play it docked.

Mostly docked, since I found the V1 Switch not to be very comfortable for prolonged sessions in handheld mode personally. I did buy 3rd party joy-con grips which help tremendously in comfort. I never owned a Lite until a couple weeks ago, but that device is absolutely perfect for handheld sessions, fits in my bag no issues, and fun to play a little bit (see: too long) of Balatro before bed.

80-90% handheld, usually while my wife is watching TV or doing something else in the same room. The only time I play on the TV is when I'm home by myself, which is pretty rare.

"I like to play in handheld, but only when I'm traveling or in my house" and "I'm 50/50 playing my Switch in Docked and handheld often"

Weirdly I find it's also kinda seasonal. In the summer when windows are open or A/C is blasting, I tend to lean more docked and then as it gets colder I'm more likely to hole up in my room with blankets and a space heater playing handheld more. But generally it's pretty balanced I think. Also like, some games just feel more "handheld-y" and some are very much "I need a TV and pro controller for this", so it can depend on what I'm playing (two examples from this year: I played Emio entirely handheld and Monkey Ball entirely docked)

But yeah, Switch 2 being bigger wouldn't really bother me much. Day-to-day, I'm not really bringing it with me anywhere; it's generally more of a "going to a friends house/on vacation" sort of thing where as long as it still fits in a case I can throw in a backpack, I'm fine.

Also, what I am playing affects how I’m playing it

Am I nearing a big bombastic moment in a game? Gonna put that on TV.

Am I playing Xenoblde? I will still play it on handheld time to time, but those game don’t look as good handheld

The first option reads weird.

Handheld all the way. My dock is a glorified charging station for the Switch.
That's mainly because I don't have a TV or an extra monitor screen to play the Switch docked. I do have the Genki Shadowcast to play the Switch in docked mode using my laptop's screen. However... it was just a little too laggy for my liking. So I've pretty much stuck to handheld all the way.

It depends on the game really..

I play both docked and handheld - Some games I prefer on the big screen and some I just enjoy in handheld..
Currently mostly playing handheld becuase M&L is nice to play that way

I'm probably like 90% handheld. Even when I'm home playing in the living room, I very rarely use the TV.

95% handheld, some months even more. Depends on the game as well. VNs are wonderfum on handheld, but more acting games might be better handled with better controller than joycons.

I prefer handheld mode but I'm usually 50/50 on both. Mostly depends on my mood and what game I'm playing. VN's are perfect in handheld mode (especially if they aren't voiced), while most fighting games are docked mode only for me.

Not answering the poll because none of them feel right.

I prefer docked but that's not always most convenient. Most of the Switch's life I played probably 95% docked, but recently it's been more like 80%, which I feel is significant enough to not say "only docked". But it's not all that close to a 50/50 split either, with a strong enough preference for one mode that it also doesn't feel correct to say I just play whatever I'm feeling.

The first option reads weird.
It took me a few reads but I think the intent is handheld but "not in public". So travelling means a hotel or vacation home, etc.

Primarily docked, but moving into the girlfriends early next year and being there more often, I've begun playing in handheld a lot more on the couch/chair when she's watching something I have 0 desire to watch.

When i bought the Switch at it's launch, i played it 90% docked and the other 10% handheld as a gimmick. But with time, OLED version coming out (it makes a big difference on the screen) and moving in with my girlfriend, i'm not at 95% handheld and 5% docked.
Playing in handheld with headphones feels more immersive to me than playing on a 55' TV; the Switch spoiled me in that aspect, i can't go back to buying a console that requires a tv/monitor to play.

When I first got it, probably 70/30 in favour of handheld. These days, 70/30 in favour of docked.

The beautiful thing about it is it fits around your lifestyle. And as my circumstances, living arrangements, enthusiasm, TV, etc have changed, how I used my Switch has changed with it. Certain games only feel right in one mode or the other (I never once went handheld with Metroid Prime, but the thought of playing Peglin or Tetris 99 on the big TV feels insane to me).

I pretty much only use my Switch in dock mode. Excluding the very rare times I might bring it with me when I am out of town, I just don't use handheld mode all that much.

Even when I have taken my switch with me on trips, I barely touch it. I don’t feel comfortable using it public either. So basically always docked, outside of specific situations like family time at Christmas (where they’re watching something on tv that doesn’t interest me, for instance!).

primartly docked with 8bitdo ultimate pro controller however if i'm watching tv I will play in handheld using hori split pad compact eevee edition.
I dont use joycons at all lol.

Step 1: Buy it at the store.
Step 2: Open right there in the store.
Step 3: Ask the store clerk "What's the Wi-fi?"
Step 4: Scroll through over 11,000 games on the eshop for eight hours to find the one perfect game for you.

Fully handheld. Never even used the dock.

The vote is already a perfect example of why the hybrid setup is such a hit. Whatever way you want to use it, you can switch between them on a daily basis, or just treat it strictly as a portable, or just never have it leave the dock.

At launch I was about 60/40 docked/handheld when playing it.

Though when I got the OLED model in 2022 it was a night and day difference, vast majority of my Switch gaming is handheld outside of docking to record gameplay or certain games like Xenoblade 2.

Portable for single player.

Docked for multiplayer, motion controls, heavy battery using games (Witcher and such), or when playing with friends and family in the room that are interested in watching some gameplay instead of watching something else in the tv.

80% handheld.
I did just get a new TV in my room though so it'll probably slightly change

50//50 for me. Important for me to do the Shared Space bonding thing with my spouse despite doing different things. Gaming TV in the basement, main living space upstairs

Switch lite so portable only
In my house or wherever I'm staying

Easily most of the time docked, but that time when I can only use it in handheld mode is very important to me. So the hybrid nature of Switch is very important to me still.
